Throughout life we face risks from infectious diseases, chemical hazards used in industry,
found in outdoor environments and sometimes within our own homes, radiation from natural
or man-made sources. Health protection aims to keep people safe from these risks
in everyday situations and in emergencies. Preventative measures such as immunisation
programmes and regulatory controls around food, water and environmental safety are put in place.
When and where risks to health emerge, these are detected through national and international
surveillance systems and dynamic risk assessments carried out. Risks are managed through action to
control hazards, interrupting pathways of transmission and by communicating advice to
working with individuals, communities and organisations to minimise any potential harm to health.
