today's story is about a dolphin
his name is jack
he also known as a bottlenose dolphin
jack lives in an ocean
he lives in the water but he is not a
fish
he cannot breathe under the water
jack
is a mammal
and has lungs
and he breathes air like we do
he breathes through
a hole
located right on top of his head
called a blue hole
when jack swim under the water he can
hold his breath up to 12 minutes this is
a long time
but this doesn't mean that jack can live
out of water
jack can only live out of water for
several hours
if he kept wet and cold because jack
must remain hydrated in order to live
jack is really fast he swims at a rate
of 26 feet per second
jack is big
and he eats a lot of food
he is 13 feet tall he is bigger than
human
jack loves eating small fishes
and shrimps
he has a lot of teeth he has hundred
teeth
and only get one set of teeth for life
jack is a very social animal he likes to
live in group
with his family and friends called pots
jack communicate with other dolphins by
making squeak
whistle and clicks sound
jack loves playing
and can jump as high as 15 feet which is
over his body length
he is so smart he is one of the smartest
animals in the world
underwater jack used equal location to
track food and predator like shark
equal location is like when a dolphin
make a sound and then listen to the echo
jag's hearing is so sensitive to these
echoes
that he can almost see objects in the
water by hearing
this allows jack to locate food in
cloudy or dark water
you can see jack and his friends
at aquariums or you may spot these
friendly fellows from shores and from
boats
you can look for
splashes look for lots of splashes
us
dolphins keep coming to the surface of
the ocean to breathe oxygen
and at the end of the day jack and his
friend get tired and need to sleep like
we do
but jack sleep with one eyes open
us half of his brain stay awake to keep
him from drowning because he needs to
come to the surface of water to
he either rest quietly in the water
vertically or horizontally or sleep
while swimming slowly
now
jack is sleeping in the ocean
and i need you to close your eyes
and go to sleep
night
