A former US soldier reunites with his Vietnamese love after 50 years.
50 years ago, before parting ways, a dashing young American soldier named
Ken Reesing handed 50 envelopes to a Vietnamese woman named Thuy Lan,
amidst tears and lingering emotions.
Ken promised her, when the last envelope is sent,
I'll return to find you, my first love.
However, as time passed and all 50 letters were sent, they lost contact.
Their beautiful love story ended with a deep sense of regret.
Half a century later, the soldier, now in his 70s,
lives a quiet life in Ohio with only his cat for company.
He was once married, but never had children, and now spends his twilight
years alone.
Yet memories of his first love with the Vietnamese woman began to resurface,
filling him with longing.
Ken recalls 1966 when, at just 20 years old, he enlisted in the military.
Two years later, as the Vietnam War reached its most intense phase,
Ken was assigned to the US Army Data Service Center at Long Bin Base in
Bien Hoa, Dong Nai.
In those lonely evenings, he often stopped by the M Club for a beer or two.
It was there that he first encountered Thuy Lan, a Vietnamese waitress.
From the moment he laid eyes on her, Ken was captivated.
He began frequenting the club just to see her.
One evening, their eyes met.
She shyly smiled, and
that simple connection sparked the beginning of their relationship.
They began talking, getting to know one another, and eventually fell in love.
On weekends, after Thuy Lan attended church,
they would meet near the base to spend time together.
However, like so many wartime romances between Americans and Vietnamese,
the impending US troop withdrawal cast an inevitable shadow over their relationship.
One day, Ken worked up the courage to ask Thuy Lan,
will you leave Vietnam and come to America with me?
It was almost a proposal, but she declined.
As the eldest daughter in her family,
she couldn't abandon her responsibilities to follow him to a faraway land.
Respecting her decision, Ken left Vietnam alone.
Before his departure, Ken purchased 50 numbered envelopes and
made a solemn vow.
When the last letter is sent, I will come back for you.
Yet, as the years went by and the letters came to an end, life had other plans.
Ken even contemplated reenlisting in the military to return to Vietnam, but
his efforts were met with strong opposition.
At the time, the Vietnam War had become deeply unpopular in the United States, and
veterans were often treated with disdain.
Though Ken shared in the public disdain for the war,
his commitment to Thuy Lan drove him to repeatedly seek a way back.
Unfortunately, with the withdrawal of US forces and
the closure of Long Bin Base, all communication between them ceased.
As for Thuy Lan, she eventually married,
though her marriage ended in divorce after just one year.
She raised her child alone and has lived a solitary life ever since.
By June 2019, Ken decided to post a heartfelt message on social media,
accompanied by an old photograph of a young woman, about 17 years old.
Hello, my name is Ken Reising,
a US veteran who was stationed at the Long Bin Base in Bien Hoa in 1969.
During my time there, I met and fell in love with a girl named Thuy Lan.
She worked at the M Club within the base.
Today, she must be over 70 years old.
I have never stopped thinking about her.
I promised I would come back, but for many reasons I couldn't keep that promise.
I want to find her, the woman who has always held a place in my heart,
just to know if she is still alive and happy.
I have no intention of interfering with her life.
Ken didn't hold out much hope of reconnecting with his first love, but
a miracle unfolded.
His emotional post quickly went viral on social media, and
the online community helped him locate Lan.
After decades of twists and turns, she was found living in Than Bin Ward,
Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province, earning a modest living by selling porridge.
Separated by half the globe,
both had believed they would never meet again in this lifetime.
Yet now, they stood reunited at Tan Son Nhat Airport,
seeing each other for the first time in 50 years.
Lan wore a blue ao dai,
the traditional Vietnamese dress that Ken had always admired.
Reflecting on the moment, Lan said, it felt like a dream to have someone love and
remember me for 50 years, and now to become close companions who talk every day.
I don't need wealth or power.
My life feels complete just like this.
Overwhelmed with emotion, they embraced tightly.
Tears flowed freely as Ken tenderly wiped them from her face.
I am truly happy to know she is alive and well, he shared.
Before we met, I asked her to wear the traditional ao dai.
I'll never forget stepping off the plane and seeing her in that dress.
After 50 years, the only difference is her hair is shorter.
Her face and smile are just as I remember,
like the 16-year-old girl I once met.
However, Ken's trip to Vietnam lasted only 14 days, and he had to leave again.
Before his departure,
he asked Lan if she would consider moving to the US with him.
Despite their age, he expressed his desire to marry her,
fulfilling the promise he made five decades earlier.
Both families wholeheartedly supported the idea, but
Lan said she needed more time to think.
After all, they had only recently reconnected, and
there was still so much she didn't know about him.
Fate works in mysterious ways.
The number 50 seemed almost prophetic for their love story.
The letter that marked their separation also became the symbol of their reunion,
exactly 50 years later.
