Tesla CEO Elon Musk and President Donald Trump sat down for an interview which aired last night. The pair discussed their efforts to dismantle what they described as an unelected bureaucracy and reduced waste speaking on Fox News. What all we're really trying to do here is restore the will of the people through the president and and what we're finding is that there's an unelected bureaucracy speaking of unelected there's a there's a vast federal bureaucracy that is implacably opposed to the president and the cabinet. If the will of the president is not implemented and the president is representative of the people that means the will of the people is not being implemented and that means we don't live in a democracy we live in a bureaucracy and so I think what we're seeing here is the sort of the thrashing of the bureaucracy as we try to restore democracy and the will of the people. And it will be hundreds of billions of dollars worth of fraud I say waste and abuse but fraud waste and abuse and he's doing an amazing job and he attracts a young very smart type of person. Musk described himself as a technologist who tries to make technologies that improve the world. SpaceX CEO says his t-shirt says tech support because that's what he's providing to the president. Musk is spearheading Doge which has taken the lead role in carrying out the president's plans for downsizing and overhauling the federal government. Doge has swept through federal agencies dismantling various programs deemed wasteful since Trump returned to office last month. The federal government has begun major layoffs following President Trump's directive to reduce the workforce. About 400 Department of Homeland Security employees have been fired including over 200 at FEMA and 130 at the cybersecurity and infrastructure security agency. The administration cites cost-cutting and eliminating waste to estimating 50 million dollars in savings. Other agencies including the FDIC and FAA have also cut staff with lawmakers voicing concern over potential impact. The White House says that critical functions will remain unaffected. Additionally 75,000 workers accepted buyouts as the administration moves forward with its downsizing efforts.
