This is the Long Thanh International Airport, and it is Vietnam's upcoming megaproject that
will drive the economy to a higher status. It has an estimated total cost of over $15 billion,
making it one of the most expensive infrastructure plans that the country has taken so far.
Constructed to serve as much as 100 million passengers annually, this is truly one of the
most spectacular future airports around the world, and possibly making it one of the largest around
the region. It will occupy a land size of over 50 square kilometers and have a total array of
four runways. In detail, this is divided into three phases. The phase one, which is the general
concept of the airport, is set to be accomplished in the year 2023. By this time, it will only
accommodate roughly 17 million passengers annually, along with a single terminal and a single runway.
The next phase, which is set to be completed in 2025, will see that the airfield will have
a capability of over $25 million annually. From here on, several aspects can still change,
but the government is planning to have its capacity double by the year 2035,
along with an expansion of another runway and possibly a terminal.
The master plan was developed by ADPAI, one of the best consulting firms around the world.
They are the ones who have successfully helped to create the finest airports around.
To name a few, they are the ones who are behind South Korea's famous Incheon International Airport,
Japan's Kansai International Airport, and so much more.
The design concept was introduced by the Hiram Architects, a South Korean firm.
They have presented this as a beautiful-looking lotus shape as it symbolizes the elegance,
strength, and warmth of Vietnam's culture. Like a lotus petal, it will stretch from its terminal
all the way up to the parking spaces. Its main idea was to allow travelers to feel the form
and interior spaces as it reflects the warm hospitality of Vietnamese people.
Such an exquisite architectural model will surely make its course as one of the winners
in airport design competitions in the world. Hiram are known for designing such fascinating
structures. They are very much regarded by many. Their projects have seen awards after awards.
One of their greatest feats was when they were awarded the global best project award for Baku
Olympic Stadium. While this may sound like a futuristic plan that has just came in recently,
this has actually been going on for more than a decade. It was in fact approved in the year 2006,
but because of several problems, this has been moved up until recently.
It is projected to start its construction in the early months of 2021 and be until the later stages
of 2025. Accessibility to and from the airport is also a give-and-take from the government.
They have planned many top-notch projects to ensure that they can cut travel time as high
as possible. One of the aspects is that they have an upcoming high-speed railway that will connect
this airport to the important parts of the country. Another one is that there is news
about a light metro as an alternative to going to the city center or just to nearby places.
Anyway, what do you think about Vietnam's upcoming mega-airport?
