The Madonna della Sedula is one of Raphael's most celebrated paintings ever.
It was probably painted by Raphael for the Pope Leo X Medici around 1514.
This is the reason why probably the Virgin Mary is sitting on a chamber chair.
It is a particular type of chair that was normally reserved by the high dignitaries
of the papal court. In this painting Raphael was able to create a perfect circular composition
because the bodies of the Virgin Mary and of Jesus started moving from curves, able to
increase the circular shape of the composition. It's perfectly acceptable what the greatest
English historian of the 1700s, Idra Gibbon, wrote about this painting, describing this work.
In fact he considered this painting as a perfect mix between the three main
aspects of the Virgin Mary all together, melted all together. The humanity, holiness and grace.
Raphael, the Madonna della Sedula, about 1514.
