M Residence is a mid-century house originally built in the 1980s,
nestled on a seven-acre wooded site in Hudson Valley, United States.
This project is the result of a complete renovation and expansion designed by Takatina LLC to meet
the needs of its owners, a creative couple seeking a serene modern home while preserving
its existing rustic character. The renovation design prioritizes the use of visually soft
materials with natural textures to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. On the ground floor,
the exposed wooden structure has been preserved and combined with century-old reclaimed terracotta
tiles featuring an underfloor heating system. The warm white painted walls and restored wooden
ceiling serve as a harmonious backdrop, while the ribbon windows surrounding the house allow
natural light to filter in throughout the day, creating a soft and tranquil ambience.
In the kitchen, dining, and living area, a 12-foot-long custom island acts as the focal
point of the interior. Made of honey-stained rift-cut oak veneer and topped with a limestone
countertop, it is complemented by a sculptural Vola faucet and an integrated pit cooking system.
This space is designed to create a seamless flow between cooking, dining, and relaxation functions.
On the upper floor, the master suite has been completely reconfigured with an additional space
surrounded by a rooftop garden. The A-frame master bedroom offers picturesque views of the
pine wood flooring and an iconic Noguchi pendant light hanging from the wooden ceiling
set a calm and sophisticated tone. The master bathroom is designed as an exclusive bathing
retreat, featuring a monolithic limestone vanity and a freestanding bathtub surrounded by checkerboard
patterned limestone tiles and soft plaster finishes. Large fixed ribbed glass windows have
been carefully placed to balance natural light and privacy, while a skylight above the shower area
enhances the relaxing experience with a warm glow. The project is set to continue into phase two,
which includes the construction of a guest pavilion and carport, completing the master
plan for M Residence. With a design approach that is sensitive to the natural surroundings
and a carefully curated selection of materials emphasizing warmth and timelessness,
this house is a perfect example of how architecture can create a harmonious living
experience that blends seamlessly with its environment while remaining modern and functional.
