The Mapogo lion coalition and the Ximhungwe lion pride with a massive buffalo feast back in 2011. This archive footage is mostly unseen with only a short clip being previously posted. The lions fed on the buffalo for two days. None of the Mapogo sired cubs with this pride survived the Selati Takeover.
Filmed in the Sabi Sand Nature Reserve, Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa
About Rob The Ranger Wildlife Videos: The purpose of the channel is to show what it is like to experience seeing wild animals on an African safari. Nature Documentaries are often highly edited to tell a story, wildlife safaris are not, and the idea here is to show the wildlife sightings the way they were seen. Safari tours in Africa are generally suitable for all ages and this channel can be considered an educational channel about incredible nature, some scenes in the nature videos may be more graphic than people are used to but this is the reality of nature and is what you would see if you were present on such a safari in person. Safaris in Kenya, South Africa, or any other African country are an unrivalled experience for anyone with a passion for nature, wildlife photography, and travel. Hopefully the animal videos on this channel can provide a glimpse into what the nature experience is like and encourage more people to take a wildlife safari one day. Hey everybody, I'm Rob the Ranger and you're watching me.
No, but anyway, enjoy the video.
When do you think they killed this?
Early this morning. Sometime last night.
That's the littlest cub at the back there.
That's the first one of these buffalo I've seen.
That's when you get a dead one.
Yep.
Here, yeah.
So they do get it by the throat, pretty much.
Yeah, once the lions have left it, the hyenas, the vultures,
they'll all come down to you.
It's barking. It looks like it's had its fill too.
It's getting red in the face.
Yeah, that's their communication call.
Nobody's responding to it.
Baby.
With the Mohawk.
Yeah.
Yeah, now they're certainly not going to be thin anymore.
Good meal for all of them here.
Strong those jaws.
The cubs like getting right inside a kill like that.
Underneath the internal organs inside.
Here comes another lioness in.
She went off to have a drink somewhere.
There's now three lionesses here.
Three lionesses, three cubs.
The fourth lioness is not here yet.
She's also got two cubs.
And then the fifth lioness of the pride
has probably just given birth in the last few weeks
so she'll be far away from here.
Hidden somewhere.
This appears to be the mother of the youngest cub here.
That little cub churning his mother there.
Even at that age they get aggressive
if their favourite bit of the food is threatened.
Who's next on standby?
I'm going to make your way to the Zangala.
It's coming over with my hat.
So who are these other females?
Are they cubs?
No, there's five females in total in the pride.
And two of the females that are here have cubs.
One has the older cubs, the one that's feeding next to us.
And one has one very small cub
that's only about two and a half months old.
So the males have eaten?
Well, they're full.
Now when would they have...
When was it? Two days ago.
Two days ago?
It's not as smelly as I thought.
Oh, two days?
They've kept it in the shade, luckily.
That's what I wondered.
Luckily for us.
So they just kind of share all the food?
Yeah, they're sharing fairly happily at the moment.
There will be incidents where they're not so happily sharing.
So wait, you're saying the females,
they don't all stay together all the time?
At the moment, they're not,
because they've got cubs of different ages.
So the female with the oldest cubs
has been left out of this particular situation.
The female and another female
has just given birth in the last couple of weeks
from what we can work out.
So her cubs aren't old enough to eat meat yet,
so she hasn't found out about this either.
The males also won't be together all the time either.
They'll often leave one of them with his pride,
the other two go for a walk,
or three of them go for a walk,
and then split up and go in different directions.
The more they move around,
the more of the territory they can cover.
He's just being awkward, I think.
While the males are here,
there'll be no hyenas that come around.
They're the ones that are in competition with the lions.
Often hyenas hunt their own food,
and the lions will steal the food from the hyenas,
rather than the other way around.
Look at that.
That space that he was defending from the female,
he's moved away,
and he's letting that cub eat.
That's where he was sitting.
So he doesn't want the female to eat that little particular bit of meat,
but he's letting the little cub eat it instead.
A little scar on his shoulder like that,
there's nothing considering three of his brothers are dead.
This male...
Oh my god.
