ladies and gentlemen this is Joe's video
games back with another cool arcade game
video for you this evening this is not
an arcade game though this is a pinball
machine but pin balls are in arcades too
so it counts this is actually part two
of our series on repairing this Spanish
eyes pinball machine if you watched the
first video and if you didn't watch the
first video go ahead and turn this off
and go find it it's on our channel here
but if you watched the first video we
worked on the back of this game this is
an old Williams 1973 Spanish eyes
single-player e/m pinball machine and we
worked on the back box so we we cleaned
the score reels we clean the some some
stepper units that were back there the
replay unit and a few few relays and now
we have moved on to part 2 where we are
going to work inside the game a little
bit basically trying to get the game up
and playing and then we want to do some
cosmetic stuff so I'm this is kind of a
beginner's guide so if you're if you
know all about pinball machines this may
be really boring to you but if you don't
know much about them hopefully this will
hope you'll enjoy this this is basically
the inside of the machine we've taken
out the playfield sitting there as you
can see there's just two jones bugs that
you can remove just like the ones we
cleaned in the back box and the entire
play field will pop out and so you've
got down here in the bottom a few things
you've got a whole bunch of relays over
here to the side a couple more back
there you can see the sockets where the
plug the jones plugs plug into i've
cleaned all of the contacts on all of
these this is the scorer motor very
important
you've got the fuses right here and then
you've got a few more jones plugs over
here and again we were talking a little
bit about it whenever we're doing the
back box but these things look much more
complicated than they actually are
they're very very simple it's just a ton
of switches and so if you get all of the
switches clean
you get all of the the stepper units
that we were working on in the back
resetting like they should and stepping
up like they should then the machine
will work very well so now if you're if
you're new to this
I wouldn't recommend adjusting every
switch
I don't adjust every switch and I've
been doing a for quite a while now if
you if you see a switch that's obviously
out of adjustment yeah you want to
adjust that but you don't want to go
through and try to make every switch
perfect where you know you move this one
a little closer or this one a little
farther away because you're just gonna
cause all kinds of problems for yourself
so what I do is show you a couple of the
relays just to show how the switches
work and it just kind of it's it's like
I said it's very simple and once you
kind of understand how they work it
really makes things make a lot more
sense for you
it took me a while to figure it out even
as simple as it is it it doesn't make a
lot of sense whenever you first start
messing with these or and when you look
at the schematics but if you start
realizing that everything is on or off
then it makes it makes everything start
to come together in your in your mind a
little bit so I figured we'd show if I
can get it to zoom in on one of these
suckers
this here is a relay and it has a whole
Bank of switches just like most games I
mean just like most most of the switches
are arranged in relays like this in
pretty much any Union pinball machine
and again you know this may or may not
show up that well but basically what
happens is the game tells this relay to
energize this is a coil it creates a
magnetic field which basically pulls
this little plate in and when it does it
connects the switches as you can see
these some of these switches go through
this little spacer here for this little
whatever you want to call it and it
makes the switches move so as it goes in
you see the switches closed
so let's look at this end one here
I don't know if you can see the gap in
it yeah there you can probably see it
watch I want to push it in it closes the
switch
and if you look so whenever it energizes
it closes it makes the two switches
connect which makes to the two wires
that are connected to the switches
Connect and that's how the entire
machine works so basically if you look
really close the second one's a little
better to see this one look this one if
you look really close you'll see that
when the switch connects when it
connects it pushes the other switch just
a little bit so you see the switch that
it's hitting the blade move a little bit
that's perfectly adjusted basically what
that's doing is the switches hitting the
contact on the end of the switch is
hitting the other switch and it's making
it move just a little bit and when it
does that actually cleans the contact a
little bit now I went through and
cleaned all these switches with a small
file if you do use a file you want to
use one that's that's you know 400 grit
or something like that you don't want
anything really abrasive because you'll
just eat up all the the contacts on the
switches as you can see on the at the
end of the blades you see the little
point as they call it where the switch
is actually connect you don't want to
use anything really abrasive you want to
use like a little flex tone or something
like a really fine file just because you
don't want to you know if you use a
rough file you want to carve those
points down to where there's nothing
left so not all of the switches just
connect like that where they're all
where they're off and then now they're
connected some of them are like this one
on the end here this is called a make or
break switch watch what happens when I
see there's three blades watch what
happens when I push this in basically
the middle blade moves right now it's
connected to the left blade and whenever
it energizes it connects to the right
blade and is no longer connected to the
left blade those are the hardest ones to
adjust basically it needs to be able to
do both
you know and it needs to be solidly
touching the left one and then whenever
the relay goes and solidly touching the
right one and not touching the left one
so you've got that style and then you've
also got some that or if I can find one
here here we go in this first relay here
if you look at that second one if you
notice it's already connected and
whenever the relay goes in it
disconnects it when a relay goes off it
connects it and the relay goes in it
disconnects it so it's normally closed
and then when energized it opens the one
next to it the third one there is
normally open and when energized
connects and then the one we were
looking at over here on the end is a
make or break switch it's one way when
it's off and then it's the other way
whenever it's energized so all of the
switches and the Machine work like that
and there's a ton of them I mean I don't
know probably a couple hundred maybe a
little more and this again is just a
one-player machine so it's a little more
simple so if you clean those switches
and you get where the relay and again
you get into you just press in on this
little plate here and it simulates what
it'll do whenever the electricity does
it if you get it where they're all
closing if they're open or opening if
they're closed or making and breaking
like they're supposed to everything will
work great okay
over here you've also got the score
motor when these relays are pretty much
the same on all of the games you'll
they'll look a little different but
they're basically they work this thing
over here you've got the scorer motor
this can be different on different
machines but basically it's similar to
the relays except the way it works is
there's a motor here on the end that at
certain times in the game will turn and
whenever it does it turns this entire
assembly here which has all of these
different little cams on it and switches
stacked on top of it so a lot of times
if you get one of these old games and
you plug it in it what will happen is
this will come on and just keep turning
and turning the turn
Turner Turner Turner Turner you can't
figure out what's going on with it
basically it's trying to get back to its
home position so if you look really
close on this last one I believe it's
usually called the index relay I mean
the index cam this last one has these
little points on it as it turns around
every time it gets to one of those
points it pushes the switches up as the
little thing at the bottom rides up over
the thing so right now the switch is
these three or whatever aren't connected
but whenever it goes up over that little
point it pushes it up to where they're
connected and so each one does something
similar like this next one here and
eventually it falls in a little hole
there which makes the switch open and so
each one does this so basically you have
to clean all of these switches and you
have to watch that action and go through
manually and make sure that they're
doing what they're supposed to do as it
goes down do all of the blades open up
as it goes up do all of the blades
connect or however it's set up so yet
another important part of the game and
then finally what we'll talk about here
in the inside are these fuses just
simple glass fuses they're usually
marked there behind it what the what
amperage fuse is supposed to be in there
you can use a fuse that it has a higher
voltage because that's a rating so
basically if you need a 5 a 5 amp 32
volt fuse might be something common that
you see in one of these you can use a 5
amp 250 volt fuse because it's just
saying that it can allow up to 32 volts
too so if you use one that's a 250 it
can allow up to 250 volts through so
that's fine but you can't use one with a
higher amperage so if you need a 5 amp
you need to you need to find a 5 amp if
you put a 6 amp basically it makes it
harder for the fuse to blow
and the purpose of the fuses is to keep
something from catching on fire so you
don't want to you don't want to put too
high of a fuse in it if you go up a
little bit you'll probably be alright
but just as a general rule you want to
stick to what it's what it's recommended
to have and you see our jones plugs here
i went through and cleaned those some of
these are adjustments and things one of
these is just where the coin door plugs
in and then the back here this is an
interesting a little deal again this is
a 1973 Williams this Jones plug here
goes to these two things this is the
knocker which basically when you win a
free game that flies up makes that noise
and then over here this is the like a
little chime box basically enough will
fake it basically it hits this little
silent phone bar here probably needs a
little work but basically the little
metal thing will hit the bar vibrate it
and make it resonate in this chamber
here so it's got that and we saw on the
back how every time you score ten points
it there's a little bar that hits a
little bell in the back too so that's
its mode of making noise for you so
that's where we are so far what I'm
gonna do next is I have this pinball
play field here and I'm going to clean I
just removed it because it's a little
easier to work on I'm gonna clean the
relays that are on it and I'm gonna
clean the Jones plugs and I'm going to
adjust a few things on the bottom of the
play field here and then I'm gonna go
through this reset bar here
this has a relay be relay serie de lady
relay relay number one relay two three
four five and six this will be features
that are on the play field I don't
haven't even really looked into it yet
but basically the way this works is this
bar here will this coil will pull in
which makes this bar pivot which pushes
down all of these latches which opens
switches and closes switches and then
whenever you score whatever you score to
make the relay pop it pulls in this
little coil here's the one on the end
the a relay it'll pull that plate in and
will trip that relay like that so that
will change the switches how they're now
now they're touching something else
buh-buh-bah so this is the exact same
thing you just need to make sure that
the switches are touching good and then
opening doing what they're supposed to
do just mechanically working so let me
look at the playfield maybe we can
figure out what those even are you've
got numbers here so like there's a 5 a 1
a 2 1 & 2 a 3 & 4 and a 6 so whenever
you hit that what it's gonna do is it's
going to trip the corresponding relay
and that'll cause different things to
happen the scoring to advance things
like that
now the ABCDE relays I'm not oh those
would be that to the top okay so here
the rollovers at the top a b c d e so as
you go through that roll over like this
won't end
e when you go over that switch the
machine will tell the e relay to trip
so one of these switches here on the e
relay will like turn a white on or turn
a light off and one will maybe set up
another relay where now it works or
whatever so all these machines are just
switches arranged together that make
wires connect the different things and
you can see just all of the wiring that
runs through them to make all of this
happen it's a very it like I said before
it's an archaic computer basically it's
just a on or off all of these switches
different things connected to different
things very simple but really genius
whenever you start kind of looking into
the way that they were designed and the
way that they work so what I'll do is
I'll get started cleaning up that the
bottom of that playfield and then I'll
slide it back in and then we'll try it
out be back in a minute
all right folks we're back we put the
playfield back in after cleaning some of
the things on the bottom like I was
talking about and I've got it plugged in
something to turn it on and just see
what happens yeah I guess if nothing
happens I just won't upload this part of
the video but we'll see so I'm just
going to turn on the power switch first
all right so everything reset to zero I
don't know what that means and then I
hit the left basically on the ODMs when
you hit the left flipper switcher on a
lot of them it turns on the attract
lights the reason everything is blinking
is because somebody has replaced all of
the all of the the lamps in the back box
with blinker blinker lamps they take 44
or 47 bulbs but you can put in I believe
those are called mmm I can't think of
the number right now there's a 455 I
believe I believe the 455 bulbs you can
put in and they'll do that they'll come
one and then turn themselves off and
come back on and turn themselves off so
if you've got a bulb that stays on all
the time like for instance this one
right here you know underneath that
plastic if you replace that with a 455
bulb that bulb would blink like these
ones back here are doing right now a lot
of times on the games I think they went
a little overboard on this one but a lot
of times on the games they'll uh they'll
put the ones behind the title as
blinkers and as you can see whenever
that back glass lights up it actually
looks a lot worse than it looks whenever
it's off because of all the paint fading
or cracking off all right so I don't
know what's going on now it says tilt
and it says balls to play too
so we're going to hit the start button
and see what happens
well it went up the five balls to play
like it should have and it reset the
scores earlier like it should have but
it did not kick the ball out we will
that's that coil you're hearing is
probably the match coil that was looked
like it was burn up
we'll see have anything spores Genesis
balls to play five the ball just drained
okay so it's not doing the game over so
we're getting there so next what I'll do
is I'll start trying to troubleshoot
where we're at and why it's doing what
it's doing all right ladies and
gentlemen we are back we figured out our
problems so the way you troubleshoot
these whenever there's issues is you you
kind of look at what is not working
right and you then you look at the
schematics and you see where that all
joins together so there was a several
things that weren't working right and
then we were was trying to figure out
what it could be and so I just broke it
down so the first thing I noticed was
that it did not kick the ball out into
the out lane that's a common problem and
there's a million different reasons why
it would do that but basically whenever
the ball ends on the switch that switch
turns on what's called the out hole
relay which is this one right here out
hole relay and so by looking at the
schematics I was able to see that
basically the power gets to the there's
a coil right here or it's actually right
there right there that kicks the ball
over and that coil was never firing so I
looked on the schematics to see what
makes that coil fire what makes that
coil fire is the out hole relay so
whenever you hit the switch the alcohol
relay would pull in but the coil
wouldn't fire and if you follow through
the schematics you can see that it could
be two or three different switches but I
noticed that it was a there was one
switch here on the relay that if I
pressed it
it would actually make the alcohol kick
so basically what was going on was just
that that switch wasn't clean so I
cleaned the switch and it fixed that
problem that was a really simple one so
once I got it where the ball would kick
out you may have noticed in the little
video where I tested it that basically
the the game would never end
it would just play over and over and
over and over and over again that proved
to be a really tough to figure out
problem took a couple hours to track
down but I did figure it out just now so
we're filming it to show you what
happened basically when you got down the
ball one and the ball ended it would
kick back out into the outline and the
game wouldn't be over so that you could
play ball one over and over and over and
over and over again
and again this is gonna be different on
every machine so you probably won't have
that same exact problem but I just
figured to show you what what the the
particular problem with this machine was
since you guys were watching to see what
was going on basically here at the back
is the game over relay and there's one
well basically this is the latch relay
it pulls it and latches it the game on
basically and then this is the game trip
relay game over trip relay so whenever
that one pulls in it resets everything
all that was working fine although the
switches were adjusted right and
everything but I noticed it on the last
ball what was happening was this relay
the last relay was pulling in and it was
just holding the whole time making all
kinds of noise that noise we were
hearing in the video wasn't the burnt
coil that we thought it was loose didn't
get the focus
it wasn't the burnt coil that we thought
it was in the back apparently that coils
just fine it was this latch coil right
here so basically it was just always on
and I noticed that whenever the ball
landed in the out hole for the game to
end the way that it ends is it makes
this little trip relay go in which pops
that forward which makes the game over
and it was doing that but it wasn't
resetting because this coil was
constantly holding it in so another
thing that was going on another coil
that was stuck on was this replay unit
that coil right there was stuck on which
is the replay basically what did they
call that the step-down coil I believe
so it was stuck one and you could hear a
clicking every once while click-click
click-click click-click something a what
in the world is clicking eventually I
figured out that there is a meter in
here that was actually clicking if I can
find it I don't see it now but anyway so
there's several little things that you
know we were hearing and seeing well
where do those all tie together so we
looked at the schematics and let's see
what we got here let me see if I can
find it again so we can show you what
was going on okay so right here is the
game
game over reset latch coil that was the
one that was pulling in on the last
couple balls right and then also if you
go back it's fed by the coin release
which on the coin relay well the coin
relay was fine the switch wasn't
connected didn't make any sense
and then it connects over here to the
ball count unit well all of these little
positions are like this is ball zero
ball one and then two three four five
seconds well I was down on ball one
whenever this was happening so it
shouldn't have been connected so how was
it getting power to the game over
latts relay which was just staying on
all the time it wasn't getting power
through the coin relay and it wasn't
getting MIT shouldn't have been getting
power through the ball count you know
because it was down over here it wasn't
over here where it would be connected
and then also we were getting a the game
relay latched the one in front of it
would come on and off and on and off and
just doing crazy stuff this play meter
was our thing that we were talking about
clicking and then the replay reset coil
was the one that was locked on so these
three ross'll getting power and if you
go back they're connected to the ball
count unit through a finger right but
the only way they should get power is if
the corner he lays on and it was not
checked it ten times just to make sure
that switch was not connected so all of
these coils were getting power somehow
and it had to have been through the ball
count unit and like I said it took two
hours to figure out the game over reset
latch was staying on but only when it
was down here on like 1 and 0
it just it nothing made any sense you
know so I will show you here is our ball
count unit notice it's nice and shiny if
you'll notice if you remember in our
first video whenever I mess with that I
said oh look it's stepping up like it
should I bought this from a from a
gentleman who had been working on it
already
and it went through and messed with a
bunch of stuff whenever right now it's
sitting on a I guess it's a little off
but when it's like I can get it to step
up alright
that's own position alright so whenever
it gets down to ball 0 or whatever it's
like this and basically these two are
connected together and these two are
connected together and these two and
this one are connected together but
these two should not be connected to
anything but themselves if you look in
the manual right here this is a diagram
in the manual and see how it says
insulated so this goes to the hand you
notice it's highlighted who ever had
this before me already had figured out
that there's something going on here
so that says to game real a latch coil
alright
then over here on this side it says to
game over real a trip coil to game over
real a logical and I remember my latch
coil was stuck one all the time what in
the world is going on long story short
after screwing around with it for a
while I started noticing that there was
a bunch of oil on this thing and this
little spider here comes off really
easily this little spider had oil all
over it so what it was doing was it was
making this top one here is grounded
through the bolt to the machine right
and the and it says in the paperwork
see these it's right there it says
grounded so some of the fingers are
grounded but they've got this little
bakelite see how they see how the
fingers aren't touching each other
inside of that they've got a little
spacer there was oil all over it oil is
conductive right so I was like man I bet
that thinks shorting out so I took it
all apart and sure enough on the bottom
of it behind there it was all burnt up
where that bakelite had already burnt
apart because of the oil and basically
this grounded one here was connected to
here so go back to the schematics the
ball count unit you see that's one place
that there's the fingers so basically
the game relay the game read you know
game relay latch the play meter and the
replay reset remember that kept sticking
on while ever connecting over here to
the ball count unit well it couldn't get
power from this line through the coin
relay so that wasn't where it was coming
from and then did this ball count unit
the GAMEOVER relay latch was sticking on
it was connected over here but it
couldn't have been getting power through
these open switches that will relay the
ball index relay but you know so that
didn't make any sense why was the thing
stuck going all the time so the
one other place on the schematics right
here the ball count unit and this is
showing you the finger that's grounded
kids look at this
it connects over BAM so what was
happening was my ground line was
connected to the one set of fingers and
then the oil was connecting this line to
this line which was grounded to this
which was keeping the game over real a1
and it was also connecting to this line
which was coming to this which was
making the game reset let's lock on the
play meter like one on the replay reset
line lock one so basically after I
figured that out I took it all apart
cleaned it a little bit like this that
was burnt I cleaned it all of that off
and then there was a little piece of
missing so I actually put some hot glue
down inside of this thing whenever I put
it back together so that it it's not
electrically touching and not conducting
anymore
so that fixed it up I will button this
up and then we'll play a little game so
you can see where it sits right now all
right so I think we got most of the
kinks worked out now again we're not
trying to get it where it's like you
know hundred percent ready to go I'm
just trying to get it where it's working
and then I can start doing cosmetic
stuff and adjusting things and it still
needs a ton of adjustments and things
like that but at least now it's actually
playing and starting a game and ending a
game I also went ahead and set it on
three ball just to just for now so I'll
hit start and we'll see what she does or
actually I think I need to add some
credits yes that would help alright so
we'll make sure everything resets
and it does kick the ball out I'm on
ball number three plunge it see if it
score as well yep it's scoring again
feeling some work oh that's cool you can
go you can go behind the flipper Wow
kind of neat can't play with one hand
it's a cool little horseshoe shot there
all right it's ball number two now ball
number one the bulbs burn out so no big
deal though get a lot of play on this
one cuz of that pop all right
game over cool all right so now it's
working it's starting to game it's
ending a game all of that there's still
a lot of little things to go through but
as we clean each part we'll go through
and adjust things and things like that
so the next video will we'll start in on
the play field and things like that and
do maybe a video on cosmetics and stuff
like that so we will see you on the next
video subscribe to us here on YouTube if
you like this kind of stuff we usually
show videos of our games whenever we get
them finished and we'll do one of this
one whenever we get it finished but
we're gonna show repairing some stuff
too we've got of course tons of games
here in our shop that we're always
working on one so we will see you on the
next video
