10 Orca Encounters That'll Brighten Your Day. "Orca encounters" like never before! Watch a curious orca break free from its pod in the Gulf of California, captivating tourists. In an astonishing display, a female orca snags a bird kicked towards our boat!
These 10 orca encounters will surely keep you smiling. While on an ocean-wide expedition's
cruise to Antarctica, a group of tourists had an incredibly close encounter with three orcas.
Interestingly, they had sighted six of these ocean predators from a distance,
and they were all hunting for a humpback whale.
But these three orcas were more curious to meet these tourists than hungry to hunt.
Given the size of these orcas, it was clear that they'd just approach to say hello to everyone
aboard, rather than capsize their boat. What an awesome moment.
Despite being the ocean apex predator, there's been no record of orcas attacking humans.
However, in recent times, they have been reported to attack boats.
And while this appears to be one of those instances, things took an unexpected turn.
While out racing in Gibraltar, this team kept facing a pod of orcas coming for their rudder.
Already fearing they were out to capsize the boat, another big one soon went for the rudder again.
However, in a surprising turn of events, they quickly swarmed away,
and it was discovered that they were merely using the rudder to scratch their backs.
Imagine an orca scratching an itch with your boat's rudder.
Seeing a pod of orcas for the first time is an amazing experience.
And here in Northeast Vancouver Island, these orcas put on a show for everyone watching.
Imagine swimming far from a group of the ocean's apex predators,
and soon one of them gets curious and breaks free from the pod to spend time with you.
Well, that was the case for these tourists in the Gulf of California.
Orcas' interactions with humans are one of the most adorable encounters you could possibly imagine.
In this clip of Luna, a young orca found in Nuka Sound, British Columbia, is proof.
He came upon a running fire hose and instantly made friends with everyone,
so much so that it was nicknamed Luna.
Who could have predicted that the apex predators in the ocean could also kill a bird?
Not me. This orca has had enough of eating only fish.
On a sunny afternoon at Matheson Bay in New Zealand, this freediver was on his way back
to the shore when he spotted a pod of orca and quickly reached for nearby rocks.
Surprisingly, while this diver fled to the rocks, one of the orcas spotted a dog nearby
gathering sticks from the water, and it quickly set out to make a new friend.
Unfortunately, the dog turned around and swam back to the shore,
but the orca still followed as far as it could.
Given how big orcas are, swimming close to a boat, they can be frightening.
However, orcas have this calming and safe presence, and it is beautiful to watch.
This incident happened in Alaska, and both the tourist and the orca enjoyed every minute of it.
In 2018, a group of divers on a Norwegian river observed what was possibly the largest
gathering of killer whales ever filmed. They were estimated to be about 300 orcas in total,
and all in the same spot, they were feeding on a giant school of herring.
Sky full of birds, dim sunlight, and the charming scenery of so many orcas
made this not just an extraordinary encounter, but a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Orcas are unbelievably carnivorous, however humans are never on the menu,
so watch how this killer whale, while hunting for its meal,
intelligently avoids colliding with a diver.
Sighting the pod of orcas, this diver on a Norwegian sea tries to get close to the orca.
Unfortunately, the diver was swimming in the view of an orca hunting for fish.
However, watch how this orca carefully glides past the diver,
without moving its tail, to avoid colliding with the diver.
This is some high-level intelligence displayed.
