Something Bad Happening with SpaceX: Starship Exploded, F9 Landing Failed! Here Why...
The best way to describe SpaceX’s recent period would be nothing short of exhilarating. Even the highly reliable Falcon rocket system has encountered unexpected delays and issues.
So what’s going on? Why is SpaceX facing so many challenges right now? And could this impact their dominant position in the industry?
Let’s dive in and uncover the truth on today’s episode of Great SpaceX!
After an action-packed 2024, SpaceX is setting its sights even higher for 2025, aiming for over 180 Falcon launches and at least 25 Starship missions. The company is also pushing the boundaries of innovation with ambitious plans to perfect Ship-catching techniques and develop a fully operational orbital refueling system.
Something Bad Happening with SpaceX: Starship Exploded, F9 Landing Failed! Here Why...
On paper, SpaceX appears to be stronger than ever. However, beneath the surface, the team is facing some of the biggest challenges in recent years.
Let’s start with the Falcon rocket family—specifically Falcon 9, as Falcon Heavy has yet to launch this year.
The first week of March was a particularly rough one for the aerospace industry, even without considering the Starship Flight 8 mission. For the first time in months, SpaceX did not launch a single Falcon 9 rocket. A key factor behind this sudden pause was likely the booster landing failure on the March 2 mission.
Something Bad Happening with SpaceX: Starship Exploded, F9 Landing Failed! Here Why...
During the Crew-10 readiness review press conference, SpaceX Vice President of Build and Flight Reliability, Bill Gerstenmaier, provided insight into what happened. According to him, approximately 85 seconds after launch, a fuel leak occurred in the booster. Kerosene fuel sprayed onto a hot section of the engine, where it vaporized and became flammable. However, due to the lack of oxygen at high altitudes, the fuel did not ignite at that moment. The real trouble started after landing—45 seconds after the booster touched down on the drone ship, it finally came into contact with enough oxygen, igniting a fire inside the engine bay. The flames quickly spread, damaging the barrel panels and landing legs, ultimately causing the booster to topple overboard.

overboard topple overboard Juliana shyan
director of NASA's science Mission at
SpaceX later confirmed this explanation
during the sphere X and punch pre-launch
briefing investigations are still
ongoing to determine the exact cause of
the leak on March 5th what remained of
b1086 was transported back to Port where
SpaceX Engineers are carefully analyzing
the wreckage to learn from the failure
this was the second major falcon9 issue
this year back on the 1st of February
another incident occurred when the
Rocket's upper stage was lost after
payload deployment instead of following
its planned disposal trajectory it
re-entered the atmosphere in an
uncontrolled manner a shocking image
later surface showing a composite
overwrapped pressure vessel from the
upper stage lying in a field in Poland
Gerson Meyer addressed this failure as
well explaining that a liquid oxygen
leak had Frozen the thrust vector
control lines preventing the upper stage
from maintaining control during its
deorbit burn with these back-to-back
problems it's possible that the FAA has
required SpaceX to conduct mishap
investigations before resuming regular
log man before resum uming regular
launches this may explain why missions
like sphere X and punch have experienced
multiple delays despite being NASA
managed missions that don't necessarily
fall under FAA restrictions SpaceX will
need to ensure these missions are
flawless to regain momentum and restore
confidence overall these setbacks have
caused significant disruptions to
spacex's launch schedule this situation
is reminiscent of last year when falcon9
also suffered from repeated delays
between July and September
due to Upper stage and booster issues
those delays ultimately prevented SpaceX
from reaching its ambitious goal of 148
launches in 2023 and now with an even
more aggressive Target of over 180
flights in 2025 even a short pause in
operations could have major consequences
so what's causing these recent problems
there are two major factors at play
first as falcon9 continues to push the
limits of re reusability and flight
frequency the probability of
encountering failures naturally
increases since the last catastrophic
Falcon 9 failure in 2016 the rocket has
built a reputation for unmatched
reliability but as SpaceX scales up
operations and pushes Beyond a 100
annual launches minor issues that were
once rare may now become more frequent
second the growing focus on Starship may
be diverting resources away from Falcon
operations Starship officially entered
its integrated test flight phase in 2023
and progress has accelerated
dramatically in 2024 given the Rock's
experimental nature Starship requires a
massive amount of engineering attention
when major issues arise like those seen
in flight 7 and flight 8 SpaceX shifts
significant Manpower toward
investigating and resolving those
problems as quickly as possible this
could be causing some unintended neglect
in Falcon operations what do you think
could there be other factors affecting
spacex's recent challenges share your
thoughts in the comments section down
below and if you're excited to see

SpaceX must Mak some critical
adjustments to ensure the long-term
success of its launch systems while
Starship is the future Falcon Rockets
will remain the backbone of the
company's operations for at least the
next few years with such a high launch
Cadence and growing industry demand
maintaining Falcon reliability is more
important than ever SpaceX cannot afford
to be complacent even with Falcon's
impressive success rates in the short
term identifying the exact cause of the
fuel leak must be a top priority fuel
leaks are a well-known but notoriously
tricky issue in aerospace engineering
once the root cause is determined SpaceX
will need to implement imediate design
or procedural improvements to prevent
similar failures in future flights
additionally successfully executing NASA
assigned missions like crew 10 and
sphere X will be crucial in reaffirming
the reliability of their rocket
looking further ahead SpaceX will need
to reassess its strategy ambitious goals
for Falcon launches demonstrate the
company's dominance but rapid expansion
should not come at the cost of
sustainability growth must be carefully
managed to ensure consistent performance
across all missions the biggest
challenge however lies in balancing
Falcon operations with starship's
development right now much of spacex's
and NASA's leadership attention is on
Starship given its key role in lunar and
Mars exploration but to maintain
spacex's strengths while accelerating
starship's progress resources must be
carefully allocated teams need to be
clearly divided ensuring that both
programs receive the focused effort they
required to succeed by striking the
right balance SpaceX can continue
leading the industry while pushing the
boundaries of space exploration when it
comes to spacex's position in the
industry the recent setbacks are
unlikely to have any major impact the
the company's achievements are still
miles ahead of the competition and no
other organization comes close to
matching its pace and Innovation as of
March 2nd SpaceX has already launched 26
missions this year more than the rest of
the world combined even with recent
challenges there is still ample time to
overcome these obstacles and push
forward with their ambitious launch
schedule if they can effectively address
their technical issues SpaceX will
continue to widen the gap between itself
and the competition
looking at last year the company
completed a staggering
138 missions completely outpacing every
other space organization in the US in
fact spacex's 2024 launch total
surpassed the combined output of many
nations and institutions over decades
this dominance highlights that even with
occasional setbacks their leadership in
the industry remains solid but spacex's
influence extends Beyond sheer numbers
right now they are the only non Chinese
company capable of reliably sending
astronauts to the ISS NASA and the US
military rely on them for critical
missions from Europa Clipper to lunar
Landers like im2 and blue Ghost and even
high-profile classified missions like
the
a37b no other private company plays such
a crucial role in the broader space
ecosystem and then there's Starship the
rocket that could redefine space flight
entirely once operational it'll shatter
existing limitations and further cement
spacex's dominance in the industry that
said SpaceX cannot afford to be
complacent their lead is strong but the
only way to maintain it is to keep
pushing forward challenges will come but
as long as they continue to innovate and
refine their technology their position
as the industry leader will remain
unshaken challenging periods like this
are crucial for the SpaceX team only by
facing obstacles can they identify
weaknesses in their systems and
operations these challenges serve as a
foundation for Innovation allowing them
to develop solutions that will lead to
long-term success over the years this
approach has been key to maintaining
their dominance in the space industry
however today's situation is different
from the past SpaceX is now managing
more complex systems than ever before
demanding greater investment Workforce
allocation and attention to detail some
of their previous methods May no longer
be sufficient meaning they must adopt
new strategies to continue pushing the
boundaries and achieving unprecedented
Milestones to move forward SpaceX must
execute upcoming missions flawlessly
especially those involving NASA among
the most critical will be the successful
launch of crew 10 and the safe return of
crew 9 including two Starliner
astronauts these missions along with
many others will be key indicators of
their operational reliability meanwhile
on the starship front completing the
ongoing investigation is essential once
the root causes of recent issues are
addressed SpaceX can make the necessary
upgrades stabilize starship's
performance and ultimately Master its
operations this is undoubtedly a tough
period for SpaceX but with determination
and the support of their fans they have
the potential to emerge stronger than
ever keep following their journey and
witness how they rise to the challenge
