Our museum is often called the last great colonial museum in the world
because its permanent exhibition hasn't changed since the 1950s,
so long before the decolonization of the Congo and other African countries.
Today we are the most important reference center for Central Africa.
We are a scientific establishment but also a very dated museum that hasn't changed in nearly 60 years.
Why these renovations? For three reasons.
First of all, for content reasons.
We remain a very colonial museum with our permanent exhibition
and would like to showcase a vision of contemporary Africa.
Second of all, the infrastructure is very dated.
Today when people visit a museum, they want a nice shop, a restaurant, auditoriums, conference rooms.
And the third reason is that the museology is very dated.
There is very little audio-visual material, so we need wide-spanning renovations.
