Ferrari appeared to be McLaren's closest opponent this weekend,
right up until Q2 in qualifying. However, it lost speed over one lap due to overheating,
and Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton did not appear to be going anywhere throughout the race
despite starting in the middle of the pack. And then, during his first race, Hamilton also met
Ferrari's questionable strategy team, which left him upset and frustrated afterwards,
especially with Ferrari's strategy and radio messages. Their fortunes could have changed
if the Scuderia had adjusted better to the shift in weather conditions.
Mercedes and Williams perfectly timed their late stops to intermediates,
while Ferrari kept both cars out too long in a gamble that, in retrospect, was not only the
wrong choice but also rather risky to commit to with both cars rather than hedging one's bets
with a split strategy. Ferrari has a powerful car, but it will need to improve its qualifying
and race runs during China's difficult sprint weekend to take advantage of it.
Hamilton did not have a spectacular Ferrari start, and it looks like he will need some
time to adjust to both the car and the team. Hamilton stated immediately after the race
that a crash course in learning how to drive his Ferrari Formula One car in the rain
had left him appreciative for simply making it to the finish line of the Australian Grand Prix.
While the seven-time F1 champion's 10th place finish fell short of expectations, Hamilton stated
his aspirations of achieving better were blocked by a lack of trust in how his car performed in
the rain. Hamilton, who suffered from a jittery rear end under acceleration that left him nearly
in the wall most of the time, recounted how the wet conditions erased all of the advances he had
made earlier in the weekend in feeling more at ease in his new car.
I think, just for me, it was just confidence, according to him. From the moment I got in the
car on Friday, I didn't have the confidence. Particularly in the high speed, I was down a
huge amount. I got to Saturday, confidence was coming back. I was building and building and
building. And then we got to the race, and again, starting from scratch, and I didn't have any
confidence through pretty much most of the race, in the settings as well. And the car was very
tricky. While he spent the majority of the Grand Prix in the lower places around P10,
he was momentarily moved to the front during the late race downpour because he stayed on slicks
while others pitted for intermediates. The move proved to be the wrong one, as he gained little
time when conditions worsened and was forced to pit during the subsequent safety car session.
Speaking about that phase of the race, Hamilton said,
In the last sector, everyone was going off, but I was managing to hold it on.
So I was just passing people, and, once I got past the start line, it was dry,
so I was like, I can hold this out, I've only got a few more laps to go.
But then, it pelted down just in that last two laps, it started coming down. At the end,
they said it's just a short shower, so I was like, I'm going to hold it out,
and the rest of the track was dry. They didn't say, more was coming, and all of a sudden,
more came. I think it was just lacking a bit of information at the end.
Hamilton's race also had some unusual radio talks between himself and engineer Riccardo Adami,
in which he requested to be left alone rather than fed information.
In the end, Lewis Hamilton believes his debut Ferrari Formula One start went
worse than I thought it would go, due to a lack of confidence and the miscommunications during
the Australian Grand Prix. The dismal outcome came during a race in which Hamilton was adjusting to
the Ferrari in wet circumstances, as well as race engineer Riccardo Adami, who occasionally received
barely any attention from his driver, as the two worked together in a race context for the first
time. Hamilton told after the race that he expected his first race in red to go much better,
but then admitted that it was difficult to adjust to his new car
and deal with the conditions surrounding him.
I felt like I was in the deep end today. Just everything is new. From the first time I was
driving this car in the rain, the car was behaving a lot different to what I've experienced in the
past. The power unit. All the steering functions. All the things are thrown to you and you're trying
to juggle them, said Hamilton. Unfortunately, at the end, they said it was just a short shower and
rest of the track was dry. So I was like, I'm going to stick it out as long as I can. I can
keep it on the track. They didn't say more was coming. So then all of a sudden more came. So
I think it was just lacking that bit of information at the end. I didn't have any confidence today in
it, unfortunately. So I'm going to make some changes next week to the car. Today was the
braking and the rear stability, particularly on power. There was lots of snaps. I was nearly in
the wall a lot. Hamilton attributed his radio communication troubles to him and Adami just
getting acclimated to one other, especially given Hamilton's 12-year working relationship with
Mercedes engineer Pete Bonington. It was noticeable during the race as some of the
messages between the two looked a bit off. Reminiscent of Hamilton's last year at Mercedes,
where more often than not, he wanted little information during the race due to the hard
nature of driving the Mercedes. And the Ferrari now also seems to be hard to drive in tricky
circumstances. Just have a look at some of the radio messages between Hamilton and his engineer
Adami during the race. And it wasn't only during tricky parts of the race, it happened throughout.
Lap 14. Adam, you can use K1, overtake, when you're close. Hamilton, leave me to it please.
Adami, K1 available. Hamilton, yes I know, leave me to it please.
Lap 28. Adam, avoid into 9 DRS, suggest upshift and then DRS. Hamilton, please leave it,
I'm learning the car as I go mate. Leave me to it with a DRS, it's not an issue.
Lap 31. Adam, try to hold the K1, just for practice, I know it's difficult.
Hamilton, I'm not close enough, I'm not close enough. When I'm close, I'll do it.
Adami, understood.
Lap 47. Adami, this is the wettest part, you are leading the race.
Hamilton, yes, it's very slippy rain, there's more rain coming down, and the disaster struck,
more rain. And at that point, Hamilton first experienced Ferrari's strategy team,
which have had more misses in recent years.
Lap 49. Hamilton, thought you said it wasn't going to rain?
Think we missed a big opportunity there. What position am I in? P9 again?
Adami, P9. Hamilton, F.
Obviously the fact that more rain was coming and Ferrari wasn't prepared irritated Hamilton,
and he added that they would regroup afterwards to
move forward. But he also applauded Carlos Sainz's former engineer's performance during the weekend,
stating that the Grand Prix was a crash course in adjusting to his new surroundings.
I think Ricciardo did a really good job. I think we're learning about each other bit by bit,
commented Hamilton. After this we'll download, we'll go through all the comments,
things I said, and vice versa. I'm generally not one that likes a lot of information in the race.
Unless I need it, I'll ask for it. But he did his best today, and will move forward.
I'm grateful I got through it, and came out with a little bit of something,
at least at one point. Obviously I didn't go off or spin today, but lacking pace for sure.
I do believe the car has more performance than we were able to extract this weekend,
and it was even less performance, for example, in the race, but I think it's all settings.
I've learned a huge amount this weekend. There's a lot to take away from it. I've got some changes
I'm going to make for next week and see how it goes, but today was a crash course in driving
a Ferrari in the rain. So, what are your thoughts on Hamilton's first race in red? Have they messed
up his chances during the last downpour of the race? Could they have finished higher if
they anticipated better? Let me know your thoughts in the comments down below.
