What's up guys we're here in Murren and in this video we're going to show you how to spend the
perfect day here so hope you enjoy it. Murren is a charming alpine village situated in the south of
Switzerland. Sitting above the famous Lauterbrunnen valley at an altitude of 1650 meters or 5113 feet
it offers breathtaking panoramic views of Switzerland's most iconic mountains.
What sets Murren apart is its car-free environment preserving its peaceful ambience and natural
beauty. In this video we'll show you how to visit Murren as a day trip including how to get there
and the highlights that you can't miss. We are Zach and Ina we make helpful videos about
destinations around the world so you can easily plan your own adventures.
As a car-free village Murren can only be reached from Lauterbrunnen by public transport
on foot or with a bike. From Lauterbrunnen you have two options the scenic gondola cableway
to Grutschalp followed by a small train or taking a car or bus to Stöckelberg and then a gondola.
We did the Stöckelberg option and left our car in the gondola parking lot. This journey involves
two gondolas the first one going to the small village of Gimmelwald and the second one to Murren.
As this is a popular route you should be prepared for crowds.
We recommend coming as early as possible to secure a parking spot. For more information
on timetables and prices check out the link to the official gondola website in the description
below the video. Once you arrive in Murren it's time to explore its beautiful surroundings.
The north face trail alternate route provides scenic views of the Munch, Eiger and Jungfrau peaks.
The trail is about 7.5 kilometers or 4.7 miles long with a gentle elevation gain of 330 meters
or 1089 feet. The path takes you past little farms, meadows, pastures with wildflowers
and cows with melodic bells. There are also a few places where you can grab a bite and a drink
as well as open fields where you can have a picnic. It's a classic swiss hike to say the least.
The north face alternate trail takes around two and a half to three hours to complete
and finishes back in the town center of Murren. You'll likely arrive back in town around noon.
Grab a coffee or have a lunch here before taking a stroll through the narrow streets.
Murren's car-free streets create a peaceful ambience inviting you to explore its picturesque
corners at your own pace. Admire the traditional wooden chalets adorned with colorful flowers
or check out the charming shops offering local crafts and delicacies. After resting the legs
start a thrilling descent from Murren to Gimmelwald on a unique via ferrata route.
If you have your own equipment it's free to enter and use this trail. However if you don't have any
experience or equipment you need to book this activity in advance. We booked our guided experience
a few weeks before we got there and the tour started at 2 p.m from the Intersport office.
After collecting the equipment we made our way to the entrance where we received instructions
regarding technique and safety. Spanning approximately 2.2 kilometers or 1.3 miles
the route is rated k3 which means intermediate difficulty but it is suitable for beginners with
a head for heights and moderate fitness level. The experience begins with easy hiking and beautiful
views as you make your way to the exposed wall section. This is the scariest part of the route
as you walk on a long exposed section with only air under your feet. The route then continues
on more ladders and fixed anchors until you reach the zip line. Then you cross a steel cable over a
waterfall. Right before the end you'll also cross a long suspension bridge that is more wobbly than
it looks. The entire via ferrata is covered in around three to four hours and loses 300 meters
or 985 feet in elevation until you get to the small town of Gimmelwald.
You'll want to cap off the fantastic day trip with some free time in Gimmelwald.
There are a selection of cute restaurants and bars here where you can sit down and relax.
The gondola's back to Stecklberg run until nearly midnight so you don't have to hurry back.
If you want to spend another sunny day in Murren there are also some other adventure
activities worth checking out. These include paragliding or taking the cable car to Berch
and Schilthorn. We left links to these activities in the description below the video in case you
want to book them. While Murren and Gimmelwald are magical places on a sunny day, heavy fog or
inclement weather can obscure the breathtaking views. The weather can significantly impact your
experience. Thus it's advisable to check the weather forecast before planning your trip to
ensure you make the most of your visit. We used the app yr.no to check the weather during our
time in Switzerland and found it to be the most accurate weather app. And if you're planning your
Switzerland trip we recommend keeping things organized with our interactive travel planner.
Find a discount code in the description below the video. We also included other important links in
the description that will help you with your Murren experience, such as an interactive map so
you can get to each place that we mentioned. We'll catch you on the next adventure!
