Haaland versus Robert Lewandowski! Both the Norwegian and the Pole specialise in spectacular goals and demonstrate week in, week out how important they are for their team. But how do they really score their goals, what’s their chance conversion, how do they help their team and what
Dormund versus Bayern, a battle between two of the Bundesliga's best strikers,
Robert Lewandowski and Erling Haaland. Both are deadly and prolific, but how do they score their
goals? What makes them so special? And who's the best? Time for the analysis. We know that Robert
Lewandowski and Erling Haaland are two lethal marksmen, but their preferred scoring positions
could hardly be more different. Let's start with Lewandowski. The pole is less renowned for his
speed. Instead, he mostly lurks in the penalty box. He almost always positions himself in the
red danger area, central to goal. All 10 of his goals this season have come from here. Lewandowski
turns and finds the target. Through his positioning, Lewandowski always has two
options to choose from. His preference bottom left. This is where he's buried seven of his 10 goals.
Lewandowski took it well, hit it well. No more than mid-height into the corner.
It's a different story for Haaland. The Norwegian bursts forward from deep and beats the last line
with his pace. He gets close to goal, normally to the left, from where he can finish with his strong
left foot. Three of his five goals this term have come from this position. The angle narrows to the
outside here, but it allows Haaland a better finish. Similar situation in the Revere derby
against Schalke. Running in behind at high speed. This time on the right, not his preferred side,
but he's still dangerous. The green area shows where he prefers to fire in. Low at the near post
or high at the far post. Instead, Haaland chips the keeper with his weaker right foot. Unbelievable skill.
What a delicate chip over the top. So Haaland and Lewandowski score their goals in very different
ways, but what about their chance conversion? You cannot get any better than perfect. What Haaland
does with his pace, Lewandowski does with technical ability. His header goal against Frankfurt was
extremely difficult. Markers tight at nine meters from goal, a goal probability of six percent. Only
six out of 100 would score, but thanks to his heading technique, Lewandowski succeeds. Next
example also against Frankfurt. 14 meters from goal, two opponents close to him. Only one in four
players would net here, but the pole does so regularly thanks to his outstanding technique.
The control, touch and finish, flawless. Haaland's trump card, his incredible pace. In this move
against Gladbach, the 20-year-old runs 86 meters at full pelt, again receiving the ball in his
preferred shooting zone. He's still running at a high speed of 25.4 kilometers per hour when shooting.
This, along with the tight angle and good keeper position, equal a goal probability of just 38 percent,
but Haaland once again chips the ball home.
Likewise against Freiburg, Haaland races in behind the back line, forcing himself out wide.
As a result, it's a tight angle. Only one in five would score from here, but Haaland knows what to
do. High near post or low far post, the latter his choice. Haaland and Lewandowski, they score
where other strikers fail. However, these two exceptional forwards don't just score, they also
provide. Here, for example, Lewandowski against Bielefeldt. The pole leaves his hunting ground at the
center of the penalty area, but brings in other players. This creates space for others. Thomas
Muller, the beneficiary here. And here is Thomas Muller. Muller in, and there's Pieperbert. Yeah,
brilliant play from Bayern. What a ball that is from Lewandowski. Lewandowski's sheer presence
attracts a lot of attention, such as here against Schalke. When he pulls four players towards him,
it creates havoc. Lewandowski peels off and makes space. And his trick here, the so-called Rabona,
where the kicking leg wraps around the standing leg, is exquisite to assist Muller.
Lovely reverse. What a goal that was. Oh, so cheeky. Haaland is also a brilliant provider.
Like here, using his pace, he travels great distance in just three seconds. He's now one-on-one
with the keeper, but Haaland sees Paslak in a better shooting position and squares it. Haaland
may be a goal-getter, but he's not selfish. But he'll go alone, will he? No, he tees up.
A similar assist at Hoffenheim. With a top speed of 35.2 kilometers per hour,
the league's third-fastest player can cover almost 10 meters per second. This creates golden
opportunities. And as he did before, Haaland lays off the ball to a teammate in a better position.
Top quality finishers in their own right. Extremely efficient and team players to boot.
In summary, who's better? Lewandowski or Haaland? Let's see in Der Klassiker. The battle lines are
drawn between the league's two outstanding goal scorers. Who do you think will make the
difference in Der Klassiker? Lewandowski or Haaland? Let us know in the comments.
