ABOUT ME:
In 2018, I decided I wanted to change my life and relocate to Italy. I didn't know anyone there, I didn't speak the language and I had only visited the country twice before. Just eight months after I had made this decision, I packed up my suitcases and moved solo from London to Italy, embarking on my very first Expat experience. On paper it sounds completely bonkers but in reality it was the making of me.
On this channel I serve up a slice of real Italian life, through weekly vlogs and videos. I also share tips on how to navigate life as an Expat in Italy, coping strategies, lessons learnt and my unique insight into life as a Brit in Italy.

Okay so today I'm taking you around Palermo we are going to the famous street food market
we're going to see how arancinas are made and we're just going to have a little wander around
so come with me to Palermo in this vlog part two.
So this is the famous Il Mercato del Capo which is a really famous street food market here in
the centre of Palermo it used to be a lot lot bigger than it is today but even now you will
still find a huge variety of stalls selling everything from fresh fruit and vegetables to
fish to spices to basically anything you can think of it's an incredible place.
Also dotted along this food market are some incredible churches
and they really are worth a visit if you're coming here to Palermo.
Welcome to Donate's so this is where I'm going to show you how arancina and some other popular
street food is made we're going behind the scenes at this famous place in Il Mercato del Capo so
let's go. So this is the process of how to make panele which is a very typical Sicilian street
food here in Palermo and people basically have it it's fried chickpea flour and people have it
in bread with croquette and it's very typical here to Palermo.
And now on to arancinas or arancinos as they are called in other parts of Sicily.
These are by far my most favourite street food and I'm so honoured to be here behind the scenes
at the kitchen at Donate's today to show you just how they are made. Now the whole process begins
with cooking as you can see a very large quantity of rice and emptying it onto the counter to allow
it to completely cool. Once it's cooled as you can see the rice is shaped into like a bowl
and the filling of the arancina is placed inside. This today are the white ragu arancinas which are
made with meat and mozzarella and as you can see once the filling is placed inside the rice it is
shaped smoothly into a ball and it's really important that there are no cracks at this stage
because otherwise when they are fried the filling will escape.
So this is the initial process of making the arancina.
Now Donate's make a minimum of at least 200 arancinas every single day. They are very well
known in Il Mercato del Capo and they are famous also for winning a famous tv program called
Four Restaurants here in Italy where individual restaurants and street food places compete
against each other. So for this they are extremely popular with tourists and with the locals alike
and so their kitchen is always busy making these delicious street food snacks. Now once the
arancinas are prepared they are coated in breadcrumbs and placed into the deep fat fryer
and here they will cook until golden brown before being removed to rest a little
and being taken straight out to be served. So I hope you've enjoyed the little behind
the scenes vlog. A huge thank you to Donate's and I will see you soon.
