Your brother, Pei Mingcheng, is in a critical condition
and will be undergoing urgent surgery.
The probability of him surviving is less than 20%.
I'd rarely seen his family since he'd been imprisoned
by Chinese authorities for his faith in Falun Gong.
His body was wounded from three years of police torture.
In the hospital, six police officers held him down
until he was anesthetized for a surgery he never consented to.
When Pei Ming woke up, he coughed painfully, but he couldn't move.
His foot was shackled to the hospital bed
and he was connected to tubes for oxygen and liquids.
He lay there, wondering what had been done to him.
After 13 days, a nurse removed bandages
that were wrapped tightly around his torso.
And when the stitches were removed, he saw a deep scar,
almost 14 inches long.
Pei Ming was taken back to prison.
No one explained his surgery, but he heard whispers among the inmates.
That's the guy who's the guard in your hospital room, right?
He told me he heard the nurse say
the operation was a first transplant surgery.
Pei Ming's body was healing,
but another round of torture started at the prison
and Pei Ming was taken to another hospital
and shackled again to the bed.
He didn't want any more surgery.
Desperately, he looked for a chance to escape.
At 2 a.m., one guard was asleep,
so he said he needed to use the bathroom.
He returned to his bed so calmly that the guard forgot to shackle him.
This was Pei Ming's chance.
He climbed down the fire escape and disappeared.
After the guards realized he was missing,
the Public Security Bureau launched a citywide manhunt
with a reward of 50,000 yuan.
For nine years, Pei Ming moved from place to place,
living as a fugitive.
Until 2015, he had a chance to escape China.
With the help of the then Assistant Security of State,
he arrived in the U.S. in 2020
and underwent multiple CT scans,
ultrasounds, X-rays, and an MRI.
Doctors and medical specialists from around the world
assessed his condition.
Mr. Chang is in one sense typical,
a Falun Gong practitioner with organs extracted.
In another sense, he is unusual
because he survived organ extraction
and because he escaped both the Chinese authorities
and China itself.
Pei Ming is a lone survivor.
Before now, no one knew a single surviving victim
of China's forced organ harvesting system.
I'm speaking out today
because the practitioners who were detained with me in the past,
they cannot speak out.
They are no longer with us.
But we made a promise.
Whoever survives must tell the truth.
I thank the U.S. government for rescuing me.
Please join me and help me tell the truth.
