When we arrived at the site, we found a land of 320 square meters.
The interesting thing about this project is that the land was elevated.
That made, in addition to the shape of the peninsula,
the development of the concept was a very fun part.
I'm Mauricio Alonso, Founding Director of M-Arquitectura.
It was a great challenge to maintain one of the clients' main requirements,
which was to maintain most of the open space, that is, the garden.
To the north, we have an open area, a common area.
It is an hectare that belongs to the neighboring neighborhood,
to the fraction where we are.
So, we decided to solve the west orientation with celosias,
to protect the west a little, and thus open up to the garden area
and have that dialogue with the outside area.
You arrive at the house and find a blind facade,
closed to the street, lined with tiles.
Extremely interesting.
It is a very affordable material, here in San Miguel.
We wanted to get out of the context,
evoking these central courtyards of the center of San Miguel.
We decided to close for privacy,
but also to achieve greater amplitude to the width of the project.
The project is 5.3 meters wide,
and having these ceiling-to-ceiling windows
communicates to the outside,
but also enlarges the interior feeling.
We like the route to the main door a lot.
The stone is laja, the one on the floor.
It is a local stone, in organic forms,
of a very beautiful color, very suitable for the context.
And then it receives the congona wood door,
which leads you inside the house.
When you open the door, you visualize this amplitude.
You perceive an open loft-like feeling,
where the common area lets you see from the moment you arrive.
However, the house has many surprises.
We found a double-height space, which is the living room.
It has this back of the tile wall,
which is bathed in the shadows during the journey of the sun.
These 6-meter-high windows give you another perception of space.
You perceive a wider space than it really is.
And the house unfolds in 140 square meters of construction.
The chimney stands out for its height.
The shot of this chimney is almost 6 meters,
because it goes out to breathe.
In winter, it can become a bit of a cold space.
However, this chimney keeps warm,
at a fairly comfortable temperature.
The kitchen is a special and very functional setting.
You come across many textures.
Wood, congona, which are repeated in all the elements of the house.
In the practice of the office with the exploration of materials,
we reincorporate the old exercise of the terrace.
And the Tom house maintains this texture and repeats it in the bathrooms.
In the kitchen, it is stellar for this material that covers the bars.
In the hallway of the vestibule, we have what is the alacena,
also made of congona wood, with a very beautiful plastic laminate
that goes in the tones of the house.
We only had a beautiful visage in the lot,
and we didn't want to leave it out.
We connect with the exterior through these two spans,
but one framing just the visage.
What I really like about the garden is that we achieved the goal
which was to obtain the largest possible garden area.
When we raised the house, we left two exposed natural strata,
which ate away at the dimension of the garden a bit.
However, the solution was to grow a concrete platform
apparent with some obstacles,
to be able to put the garden on top of this
and lengthen the dimension of the garden a bit,
but also visually communicate with the green area
that is on one side, which is for municipal use.
When you enter through the main door on the left,
you reach a studio that becomes a television station,
a library, but being able to have this privacy of the panels,
we can have a guest room.
The stairs are a very beautiful element.
The rest was done in larger proportions.
You land on a complete, monolithic terrace plate,
where the height is added again to give another perception.
The constant game of inviting the user to believe
that they are in a larger space
is being achieved by this sum of details.
And the design of the stairs, the first ramp,
is different from the second,
and it was a communication of details
that add to the texture of the place.
We landed on the high floor, which is all made of wood.
It receives a studio,
and it is a small art studio, let's say.
We found the secondary room.
It is a protected room also by this element,
a wooden ceiling.
With this, we solved the sun and the climate.
It has very good ventilation,
a three-meter window from the ceiling and from all sides.
Being in the main room,
you again perceive a constant dialogue with the outside,
since you look at the double height,
but you also look at the park,
and the connection with the horizon
is magnificent from this terrace.
The decision to leave the main bedroom open
with the living room
was basically to give amplitude.
We placed an automatic curtain
to be able to close at night,
give privacy and maintain the temperature.
In the main bedroom, you go out to a terrace,
lined with tiles,
which also has this protection from the west,
which gives privacy and also solar protection.
As an architecture studio, Casa Tom taught us
to continue practicing with exposed, honest materials,
to play with shadows, with light.
I feel very satisfied
to have made a family happy.
That is the success of Casa Tom.
