Happy Sunday Queens!!! I am so excited for this video, adding color to my closet does not come naturally to me. Sharing the tips I've learned on my journey so far☺️ Make sure you Like & Subscribe if the video was helpful!
Hi Coins!
Welcome back to Hilah Luxe for Luxury and Style Attainable.
Today we're talking about how to wear color.
If you're anything like me and this is something you've been working on or you struggle with
wearing a lot of color or doing different color combinations, this video is for you.
I put together tons of outfits and I'm not an expert by any means but I figured I would
just share kind of the tips and tricks that I've learned so far.
I've kind of been on this journey for about a year of just trying to wear more color.
It's not easy.
I gravitate towards neutrals.
I love browns, tans, black, white.
If I have to pick an outfit, it's always going to be one of those.
So I really have to be thoughtful and make it a point to wear more color.
I really have to figure out how to wear different colors together.
It's just something that does not come naturally to me.
So I figured I would share what I've learned so far on this journey.
Also, this is great practice for me.
The one thing about just getting dressed, putting looks together, practice makes perfect.
So flexing that muscle, the more you get dressed and you kind of put things together, the better
you'll get at it.
So even me putting these outfits together, it's practice for me.
I utilize the color wheel which I talked about in my trends video and a lot of you said that
was a really good tip and you found it super helpful.
So I figured we'd do that today with this video.
Okay, so I'm going to quickly pop up the color wheel probably on this side of me so we can
take a look.
And basically it's just a general tool that people across all industries use when trying
to pair colors together, trying to teach others how to pair colors together.
It's just super helpful and it just kind of takes in basic color theory.
So basically on the color wheel, I'm just looking at my phone, you have the primary
color.
So primary colors include yellow, blue, and red.
And then this color wheel that I'm showing you shows you the primary color and then the
color that complements it.
So that is an easy way to kind of put outfits together.
Also another tip for the color wheel is doing what's beside it.
Those usually work well together.
It kind of gives you an interesting take on like doing a monochrome look where it's all
one color.
Like if you did blue and purple, that's an unexpected look.
But think about like raspberries and blueberries.
Like those look great together.
That's just the first thing that came to my mind.
Same thing with like orange and yellow.
They're right next to each other and those look amazing together.
Green and yellow.
Those look great together.
A lot of people do like red and pink.
Like that would be in between purple, but red and pink.
So you can use the color wheel for that as well.
So if you're looking at this and you want to pair the primary color with the complementary
color, or you can just do what's really close to it on that color wheel.
So that's kind of like the basics.
I'm probably going to use two or three more color wheels throughout this video that go
a little more in depth and just kind of give you more options as far as color variation.
So don't be confused, but this is a great kind of like general one to screenshot and
just like start with.
Okay, let's get into my kind of general tips that I like to keep in mind when pairing colors.
My number one tip is to stick with a silhouette that you're already comfortable with.
We are already going out of our comfort zone with whatever the color is or the color pairings
that we're trying to do.
So pick something that you naturally gravitate towards.
If you love a good pair of trousers, let's try that in a new fun color.
If you love a structured blazer that always makes you feel super confident, let's do that.
In that same breath, stay away from shapes that you don't feel comfortable in or you're
not used to or that you wouldn't typically wear.
So let's say you're shopping and you're like, okay, I'm ready to get some color.
My wardrobe spring is coming up.
If you are shopping and you see a blouse that's really pretty, but it's nothing like you have
in your closet.
It's something you would never typically wear, but maybe it just looks really pretty.
It's a really pretty shade.
You may be tempted to get that, but if it's something you would never normally wear, it's
just going to make it even harder to put an outfit together, right?
If it's a super ruffly shirt and you don't typically wear ruffles or something with really
dramatic sleeves, even though it caught your eye and it's really pretty, keep the color
in mind that caught your eye as opposed to this silhouette that you wouldn't typically
wear.
My next tip is going to be wearing a color that you're already familiar with and you
already like.
So you see the theme.
It's the commonality.
It's sticking to things you're already comfortable with because the color is going to throw you
off.
You're not going to be used to it, especially if you're pairing two colors.
That's already going to be a lot.
So let's at least pick a color maybe that you have the most of in your wardrobe.
And then my last general tip is going to be start where you're comfortable.
So maybe it's just fun accessories.
So if you're not ready for a full bright colored blazer or pants, do it with accessories.
That is the easiest way to just start integrating.
That's how I did it.
I was the queen of a neutral outfit and a proper colored bag, proper colored shoes,
and then you can kind of like graduate as you get comfortable.
That also helps you figure out what colors you gravitate towards, what colors you really like,
what colors are easy for you to mix and match or style with your existing wardrobe.
So that's my last tip.
Now let's get into the outfits.
First up we have this pale yellow slip skirt and stunning like bolder bright kind of grass
green top.
The skirt is from Not That It Matters.
The goal of this video is for you to mix and match what you already have.
Not to go out and buy it.
Link in the description box.
But I'll tell you, the skirt is from Aneem Bing, but I found this thrifting a while ago.
And then the top is from Kai Collective and this comes in a set.
So if we look at our color wheel over here, these colors are next to each other on the color wheel.
So that's kind of what I was talking about.
They complement each other because they're somewhat similar.
They kind of have similar undertones.
And they just look so pretty together.
Like it reminds me of like Starburst or something.
But they look so nice together.
And then what I did, because for me, this is a lot.
So I took two things that I already absolutely love, wear all the time, feel super confident in.
I love a slip skirt.
Love a slip skirt.
They always just make me feel elevated, elegant.
They're easy to wear.
They're comfortable.
I'm not going to be fidgeting with it.
So that's why I picked this.
And then for the top, same thing.
I'm trying to be as comfortable as possible in this outfit that is taking me way out of my comfort zone.
I love this set.
I have it in, I think, two or three colors.
It's, again, comfortable.
And I love this shade on me.
Something I've noticed is that I really like green.
So I thought these would be an amazing pair together.
So the next outfit, we are doing the primary color and then the color that complements it.
That's a cross from it in the color wheel.
And I will pop up the color wheel again.
And of course, you'll see me styling it.
So this is a bold, bright, patent leather faux croc embossed mini skirt.
Again, in that silhouette that I absolutely love.
It's my favorite thing.
This is a Miu Miu skirt.
But I found it from The Real Real.
So I got it for a really good deal.
And then a cream shirt.
And I'm sure you're thinking, Janay, that is neutral.
Like, that's not what we're doing here.
Hold on.
You're going to die.
With a purple bag.
I mean, when I told you I was so impressed with myself.
Now, for this one, I had to dig into my Pinterest board archives.
And that is another great tip if you struggle and you kind of want to keep on hand quick references.
I have Pinterest boards for everything because I just love having inspo on demand.
But I save a lot of color combos.
Doesn't mean I have to like the outfit or want to recreate that in any shape or form.
But anytime I see just interesting color pairings, I always save them.
And it just helps me.
I can quickly reference that board and just say, oh, I have things that color.
Let me try those together.
I think the photo I saw, the girl had on yellow pants and a purple top.
That's a bit much for me and what I'm comfortable with.
But I was like, huh.
I have a yellow skirt and a purple bag.
And I absolutely, the cream kind of tones it down.
Makes it really comfortable.
I don't know why I'm holding it up like this.
Because you see me trying it on.
But I really love this combo.
And again, starting with something small.
The pop of color bag.
It's super bold.
This is kind of a good way to start getting into color.
And it can be, you know, whatever colors you're comfortable with.
And then the A-line skirt, which is something else I'm very comfortable in.
And then pairing it down a little bit with more of a neutral top.
I love this outfit.
I'm so proud.
Hopefully it turned out as cute as I think.
Okay.
The next outfit I think might be the boldest one.
And this one we are using a color wheel.
And we are doing a primary color.
And then the color that complements it across from it in the color wheel.
So as you can see, the primary color here is going to be this blue sweater.
This is a Loewe sweater.
I think I got it from Farfetch.
Absolutely love it.
Again, the blue navy is kind of like one of my favorite colors.
If I'm really stepping out there.
I love the print.
And I love that it has these two pops of color.
It has this orange and it has this neon.
It's a comfortable sweater.
It's just easy to wear.
And we paired it with these patent leather orange pants.
Now this was one of my first big purchases
going into trying to wear more color.
I got these from Shopbop.
They're by the brand Simon Miller.
I wore them for fall fashion week.
The last fashion week I wore these to dinner.
And I paired it with a white top.
I kept it all neutral because this was a lot.
But I thought this would be a really pretty combination.
I mean they're perfect together.
But it is a lot.
But again, this is a primary color.
And then this is across from it on the color wheel.
And I really like that this is a super bold color.
And this is more of a muted blue.
So this is a good example of like
you don't have to do two bold colors.
You also don't have to do two pastel or toned down colors.
Or colors that aren't that rich.
This one is kind of like
and it's more of the material.
It's kind of like a heathered material.
So the blue isn't that saturated.
And then the orange is like
she's there.
You can't miss her.
But I really love this color combo.
And again, it's keeping things comfortable.
I love a straight leg, high waist pants.
That's what this is.
Me stepping outside of my comfort zone
with the color.
But still knowing that I like it.
And then this is an easy comfortable sweater.
And it's more of that toned down
not super saturated color.
So the next few outfits are going to be
a little more toned down.
So we started with the extreme, hair bold
you know, saturated, beautiful, bright
fun colors together.
And kind of like how I would do that
and be comfortable with my current style.
These aren't across from each other
or next to each other on the color wheel.
But this is the color of the season.
So I wanted to grab it.
This is just like a lilac crop sweater.
And then I paired it
with gray trousers.
Both of these are from Frankie Shop.
Of course everything will be linked if it's still available.
But a lot of this stuff is old.
But I just love this color combo.
Again, this is a very soft
pastel muted color.
But it's still a color.
And then gray I feel like is
a neutral but it's also not a neutral
most people gravitate towards.
So I just felt like this was an amazing combo together
that is getting soft.
It feels elevated.
But it also is out of the norm
that most people gravitate towards.
You could elevate it. Hold on.
We're going to bring out the purple bag again.
So this again is pairing colors
but it's not monochrome
but it's still soft and then you have a little splash.
And I just think
that looks so good together.
Love that outfit.
Next up.
This one also came from my Pinterest board.
It's this green
very deep kind of like hunter green
suit. This suit is thrifted.
This is one of my favorite finds.
This is pretty old but this is a men's suit
and it's just tailored trousers and oversized
blazer.
And then I paired this
white top with it. I know it's a neutral.
Hold on.
I always like to do a tighter top if I'm doing
very oversized pieces.
The jacket's oversized. The pants are very loose
so I did a very close to the
body top. And then
I saw
I'll put up the inspo too. Any inspo
that I use I will put that up.
But the color that's going to pair amazingly
with it is red.
Look at that.
Look at that. Now I'm pretty sure
let's see. I know red
is a primary color. Okay.
So red is a primary color and green
is it's complementary color.
That's kind of how I was just looking
for things that I had in my closet.
I don't have a lot of red. I mostly only have
red accessories. That could be just from working at Target.
I just can't
go back. But I do have
a lot of green. So I was trying to figure out a way
to bring those together. And I love
this way. I love doing
like something very muted with something
saturated. I feel like that's
my comfortable zone because it almost feels
like a neutral but you're still wearing color.
And I just love how these look together.
I love a suit. So again the green suit
is something I'm already comfortable in. I'm already confident
in. Like wearing a blazer I feel like
I can do anything. Okay. This is
another muted option. So we have
dinner which is kind of giving you that blue.
More of a light blue. And
then a forest green. And
really these are the two colors I wanted to put together.
This kind of camel and this forest green.
These are all not really on the color wheel.
I'll probably have to find one that's
going in more detail. But this I put
in more of that like orange yellow
category. You know like if you
mute it down that's what this would be.
And then this would be in that green category.
And I felt like these look so
nice together. And again a very
easy comfortable way
to pair colors together. And then you have
denim. Most people are very comfortable in denim.
But I feel like this is just a great
easy combination that's
outside of your normal just like black
or brown.
This kind of like peanut butter and this green.
I think it's a great combo. And then
you could go either way with
this one. You could do. I have all my bags
right here. But you could do
red which would be super interesting
and kind of give you a pop.
Alright. Next I want to talk
about
the outfit I'm wearing.
So as you can see and I'll be
styling this one too. So we'll do like a little cutaway.
This is just a brown
knit dress. And then I have on
this brown Lewee belt.
And I
let me look at the color wheel.
I'm pretty sure this is yeah.
This is kind of like again going into like
that kind of like orange
color. If we
mute it down orange kind of mixed it
with some other stuff you would get this kind of brown.
And I thought
pairing it with
gray. And this is a good example again
of just doing like a pop of color.
Again if you're just trying to get into color
and you don't want to do a full outfit yet.
This I would wear this as a clutch
because I have a belt so that's already a lot.
But this I would
keep you know shoes brown. Everything
super neutral. And this amazing
unexpected pop of color I think is stunning
brown. And I've never worn green and brown together.
But I love it.
See and now I'm learning.
Like that's the whole point. We're working our muscle.
We're practicing. We're figuring it out.
We're learning what pieces we have that can work
together. I will never ever forget this
combo now. The next look is one of
my favorites. And this is kind of doing
the colors that are next to each other on the color wheel.
Which is also one of my favorite things.
I mean the more I learn they're all my favorite.
But it's going to be these kind
of purple faux
crop pants. These are from the brand Rotate.
And then I paired it with this pink top
from Zara. And I
just love this combo. Right?
These are next to each other. It's not
really a monochrome feel but it just
works and makes sense.
Very similar to that like yellow
and green combo. This is doing
that in a color that's more familiar
to me. Pink is one of my favorite colors so
you know a great tip. Stick with the color that
you already love. And then what can you
do. What other colors can you incorporate
to make you comfortable but also
give you like a little pop. And I absolutely
love this. These
are a lot for me so I would keep the accessories
fairly neutral. Again if
you want to do a fun pop you can do a pink bag.
You can do a purple bag. But for me
I think I'm doing silver shoes
and accessories with this. That is everything. Those
are my outfits on how to wear color.
Let me know if this video was helpful. I'm trying to
really showcase the things that I'm learning.
Style is such a journey
like you're never going to be there. You know
but the goal is to find your signature style.
The goal is to find the things that you love.
Create a wardrobe that you love so it's
easy to get dressed. And we're
all on that journey together. So give me any
suggestions of other things. I have a long list
but give me any suggestions
of video ideas that you think would be helpful
if you're trying to find your style in 2022
or if there's certain trends you want me to focus
on. I would love to do that.
We will be going to fashion week
in a few weeks so that will be a vlog. That will
probably be the first vlog we do in 2022.
Make sure you subscribe if you haven't already.
I think that's everything. Thanks for stopping by.
See ya!
