Mulches are an integral part of a healthy garden. They help to maintain soil moisture and temperature as well as reduce the growth of weeds. During this video, Steve discusses the types of mulches and why it is important to use them.

g'day welcome to I cultivate my name's
Steve and today we're going to be
looking at the importance of mulch in
the garden
the use of mulch in a garden is critical
to ensuring that you have healthy plant
growth but there are a number of reasons
why you would use mulches
reasons include such things as ensuring
that you are conserving moisture in the
soil now if you live in a hot area that
is something which you really need to
consider the application of a mulch
across the ground around your plants
will help ensure that you maintain the
soil moisture
the second reason why mulch is necessary
is because it helps to minimize weed
growth so if you don't want to be going
around and plucking weeds out all the
time mulch is something that can help
that
another reason for using mulch is that
as it decomposes and breaks down it's
actually adding nutrients into the soil
and replenishing some of those nutrients
that are used by the plants themselves
and the last reason why I use mulch is
because it helps to control the soil
temperature prevents it from getting too
hot now if you live in a cold area where
you are subjected to frosts mulch can
even help to protect small seedlings and
prevent damage to those seedlings under
Frosty conditions as well
now there are many different types of
mulches that you can use and they can
include things like grass clippings but
make sure if you use grass clippings you
allow them to dry
through to my particular favorite which
is sugar cane mulch now if you live in
an area where you can't get sugarcane
mulch you may find that you can get
other types of mulches like for example
loosen
but really any type of organic mulch
that is fibrous or grassy like in nature
will do
now just focus on a couple of other
reasons why I think it is important to
use mulch and in this particular
instance what I have is a garden bed
which has been in production for a while
and it's now going to lay fellow for a
while what I'm going to do is cover it
with a layer of mulch to ensure that
firstly it retains moisture secondly
does not have excessive weed growth
happening while it is lying fellow and
thirdly of course as that mulch rots
down it will add nutrients to this soil
so I'm going to spread this over I'm
going to make sure there's at least a
three or four inch layer of mulch over
this entire bed
the other use of bolts that I'd like to
talk about is the use of mulch in pots
now the main reason why you would use
mulching pots is to do with water
retention and in order to achieve this
you can see I've got here a layer of
sugarcane mulch also however I have seen
many people will actually use a
different type of mulch in a pot that is
more decorative might even be stones for
example
so to summarize remember mulching is
critical for a healthy garden and the
reason why you would mulch is for a
range of purposes they include
controlling the temperature of the soil
keeping it either not too hot or too
cold in a frosty area secondly ensuring
that moisture is conserved thirdly
adding nutrients back to the soil and
fourthly of course keeping the weed
growth under control
so ensure that you mulch your garden to
get healthy plant growth
