Chapter 1
Di zi gui is a book taught by the sages of the past.
First, it teaches us how to honor and respect our parents.
Second, how to respect everyone else.
Third, how to behave with prudence and be truthful.
Fourth, how to have a universal love for everyone and everything.
Fifth, how to be close to wise and benevolent people.
If you advance in time and energy in everyday life,
you can study classical literature.
To better understand these concepts,
let's tell a story from ancient China,
an example of filial piety in an ungrateful family.
Filial piety also means honoring and respecting parents
as well as respecting and taking care of brothers.
Emperor Shun, the founder of morality.
Shun was one of the five emperors of ancient China.
Shun had lived the entire childhood
in the shadow of a perfidious, inquisitive family.
When his real mother died,
the father remarried a woman who mistreated Shun
and his older brother.
The two boys often received beatings and reproaches
and in a few days they were left to suffer hunger.
The older brother did not survive these tortures,
while Shun used these sufferings
to strengthen his character and moral sense.
When he reached the age of about ten,
Taoist master Wu Cheng-tzu
saw a bright future for the boy
and decided to teach him to read and write.
Due to the interference of the godmother, however,
the promising future of the boy was ruined,
so that he had to herd the beast instead of studying.
The traditional stories about the life and family of Shun
describe the father as an obtuse,
spoiled and unable to distinguish good from evil man.
The godmother as a woman of poor intelligence,
endowed with a sinister cunning
and a false and dishonest nature.
And the brotherhood as an arrogant,
ferocious and selfish person.
However, Shun always treated his violent family
with due filial respect.
When the father beat him with the stick,
he silently endured the punishment.
Only when he was about to hit him with a heavy stick,
he ran away.
But only to prevent the father
from getting him incurable wounds or killing him,
which would have made the father commit a very serious crime.
Instead, every time the family was in need,
he went to his aid.
He used these sufferings to strengthen his character
The ancients used to say
that filial piety is the most important virtue.
Wherever Shun went,
the people of the place took him as an example
and began to behave better themselves.
At the age of 20,
Shun was already known for his great respect
towards his parents and others.
When he was about 30 years old,
at that time,
Emperor Yao was looking for talented people
and one of the ministers advised Shun.
After observing his behavior,
Emperor Yao married to Shun
his two daughters,
Eh Huang and Nu Wing.
He also allowed his nine sons to live with him,
so as to better observe his character.
Shun was able to convince people with his virtue
and thanks to this,
Eh Huang and Nu Wing,
as well as his brothers-in-law,
were all influenced by his example.
They never felt superior because of their high rank,
but they remained very humble and respectful towards everyone.
Emperor Yao was very happy with Shun
and decided to pass the throne to him
making him emperor in his place.
Becoming emperor,
Shun gave great importance to moral education.
He taught the five constant virtues,
the righteousness of the father,
the kindness of the mother,
the friendship of the older brother,
the respect of the younger brother
and the filial piety of the son.
He promoted human values
and created an example of morality
that influenced the entire Chinese nation
becoming a model that the Chinese
followed for many generations.
For thousands of years,
the tradition of Shun's culture,
which puts morality in the first place,
has been passed down through Confucian teachings
and has educated many generations of Chinese.
