hello welcome back to another monthly tour video this one's for March 2025
I'll take a look around the garden see how things are progressing as always
we'll start just below the decking not a lot's going on here you can see the
hostas starting to pop up now it's one of the large ones this a spot of
Empress Wu this is Wu La La nice big hosta saw they went in last year so
should be quite big this year and if needs be I'll take this sedge out because
I think it was self-seeded I never planted that here so that can come out
no signs of the canners yet so a bit early for them might even be out on next
month's tour video but the ones in the greenhouse should be up by then oh yeah
the ones in the garden take a little bit longer here's my potted palms I'm
thinking the one on the end which is Trachycarpus nova that might go in the
new bed which is one that I've I've created since the last tour video so
we'll take a look at that as we get down there that's at the bottom where the
compost it used to be for a couple of nice new plants to go in there one's
come from the front garden another one come from dug it up from somebody's
house recently beautiful plants it's over here as you can see Decky Steps
still not in now that'll probably happen in the coming week so hopefully once the
trees are down that's happening tomorrow so I'm gonna get this tour video done by
the end of the month and then yeah the next one the next video we should be
down I'll try and get some footage out if I can so then I think in this spot
you can see this is Schaefflera de la Vieille starting to flush I'm thinking this is
gonna go in this spot here and this big red-hot poker this might potentially come
out here because it's gonna it has massive long leaves on it and I think
this is gonna be a nice spot for the Schaefflera a decent distance away from
the path a good distance away from the path because it does sprawl this one so
I've not got many places I could actually plant it far enough away it can
go slightly further back I'll sort this area out tidy it up I reuse this big
stone here I used to have it as a birdbath I set that back up again used to
get plenty of birds in that nice to watch so yeah I'm thinking I'm thinking
this one's gonna go in here the Tetrapanax on the last video you
remember I said I wasn't sure if it were gonna make it but looking at this it's
just starting to to bud up now so that's good it's not gonna shoot from
the base it should shoot just just carry on lose a little bit of height but
that's not so bad still not sure where this waggy's going it's alright there for
now there's a little bit much room in there if that Tetrapanax gets going at
least for a while till it's up till it's up high card lines as always doing well
one thing I have done it's the last video is a certain place around the
garden I've added these rocks to the edge of the path because the birds are
a nightmare they love to just flick compost bark chippings anything that's
any mulch anything that's on the top surface they just like to flick in the
paths always a mess see I've added that since the last video probably that two
weeks ago now see down the bottom I've done it down there too
grass is getting ready for a repair so I'll do that shortly
ferns have all been cut back now I think I did that just before the last video I
can't actually remember should have watched it back but now remember I cut
back this ivy I've not done the top yet but this princeps cross waggy or waggy
cross princeps you can really see it now because last year it was it was
almost completely buried under the ivy so if I keep that in check this should
grow better get more light I remember to water it as well because I can see it
that's here looking not too bad looks probably worse worse in real life than
it does on camera because it's a yes it's not the greenest at the minute but
it looks super green on camera we'll see how the new growth comes that's not lost
any height because I've got another one in the garden that's died back a fair
bit I'll show you that when we get to it there should be some pink Chinas in here
somewhere we've buried under all this mulch I've redressed this
recently you can see lots of leaves on it as well but I have top dressed this
recently so I've buried stuff that might have been just poking up the pink Chinas
won't be poking up yet though you can see still not quite flowering this is
all the bluebells I think I told you before I've not planted these and they're
taking over where the Ophiopogons are the mondo grasses but these will not
last too long and then and they'll be gone again that's not too bad and it'll
add some nice color when they start flowering my longish trachy looking
well it's actually one of my favorites now it's getting quite big and I think
this one's looking a bit sickly I wanna this was the one I bought us the
biggest and it's like it's almost shrunk because the old fronds are
dying some have been cut off it's just not looking its best I'm hoping though
this is its third year in the ground so hopefully it's gonna kick on this year no
signs of it flowering so hopefully just put all its effort into growing some
nice good fronds this year this is looking better and better every month
this is Euphorbia John Phillips cross Pasterii yeah it does look fantastic
this lovely vivid lime green just gonna get bigger and bigger this will fill all
this space in here and that's what I'm looking forward to just filling out I'm
gonna carry on chopping back this tree have a right struggle with that but I
might ask the boys tomorrow chopping back with chainsaw if they can just a
lot lower I was originally gonna drill some drill some holes in it plant some
ferns in I had a brand new drill bit on that just burnt it straight out so I
didn't even I did a few holes but I couldn't get very deep on it so I bailed
out of that one so I'd rather just chop it down let this Euphorbia fill all that
space and then there's my other little palm down there creeping along
that's not anything special no ananas or anything that is creeping along but
hopefully it'll start to shoot up soon there's no signs of my Xanthodesia
Hercules growing yet it's nice and firm but it's not showing any signs of life
just yet but the weather's really starting to pick up now so hopefully
hopefully it does start growing soon here's the other border edge just
hopefully gonna help it does seem to have to be fair worked stopping the
birds making such a mess yeah then we've got this is the Butiagres Erisbertha
spent the winter in the greenhouse this did so yeah I haven't braved it outside
yet spent two winters in the greenhouse might even spend a third winter in the
greenhouse if the location I'm gonna plant it isn't ready so that's gonna go
down the bottom where I'm renovating potentially not gonna be ready this year
and even if it is might be too late in the year to get it planted so I'd rather
keep it looking nice and healthy carry on growing in the pot and then yeah
plant it out when it's slightly bigger even bigger little bit of a
surprise here is I've got this is the Mahonia and this is Narihira and I think I
don't know if it's so much frost or I think it might have dried out a bit much
with all this wind it's windy today and we've had a lot of wind and it's in a
pot so maybe I just not watered it enough I mean there's plenty of a nice
green growth but this this limb especially just seems to have gone real
dry and crispy and the leaves just fall away as you can see on the floor just
blowing a lot of the leaves off it should recover perfectly fine but a bit
of a shame it was a nice sized plant and it is perfectly hardy so there's no
reason a reason that would be defoliated so we'll just keep an eye on that one as
we go all the tetrapanax now are really starting to they starting to move all of
them are starting to go now all out the shadow of that tetrapanax it's gonna
look better and better this in the coming months this is really starting to
mortar now see plenty of nice green growth we didn't lose any height on that
this year no height whatsoever that's gonna hopefully I'm hoping top of the
summer house no problem maybe it may be slightly above and hopefully get a good
bit of trunk height to that so that next year the trunk height is gonna be maybe
up here and then I should be able to walk under the canopy nice and
easy at the minute this will fill right out to the path and you're kind of
pushing past it and then obviously we've got a couple more pups that came up I do
like this one how close to the path it is but we'll see how it goes to so
whether it stays or not because it it's gonna take all the light from this
Acer which is leafing up nicely now by next month this will be fully out
look lovely that will yeah this is I do want to keep it but I may just keep
chopping the leaves off the overhang the path and keep the ones to the back
just to allow it to keep growing up we'll try for a week because you know if
you look at this as a pup from last year it's grown all that so this year this
has got a nice strong root system on this it's from that from this plant over
here well they have a planted one tetrapanax well in this location so this
hopefully you know same again same height again that'll make it like four
foot almost of tronchite and with the leaves on top of that next year should
be under it if I can put up with it all this year hostas are coming up
underneath as well it's kind of growing up through the hostas so this is it's a
nice fat fat shoots on this one this will be their third year in the ground
as well so these have really bulked up since I put them in they only had a
couple of eyes on them when I put them in and I put five little plants in all
the way down the edge to border it it's lovely in spring so they'll be out in
the next couple of weeks well as you can see these will not be out this will be
out in not too long these pan across not a lot happening in this this area I'm
glad to see that Charlie boy is looking really good so it's been out all winter
under the slight protection of the trachea only a little bit of mild damage
to it that'll grow that out no problem it's it's not lost any of its growth you
know it's not died off too much at all really happy with that and minimal
protection I just use a zip tie on the worst of the nights just pull it up from
the base closes all the leaves in nice and easy I've got another Mahoney
this is volcano this is doing all right now settled in nicely small shiflera
this one's Taiwaniana can't see no new growth on it yet I don't think pick it
up on camera or maybe maybe it's just starting to flush some of the other ones
in the garden are flushing as you can see I've mulched all this bed this makes
it a little bit tidier and gives it a bit of a feed this time of year really
shows off the boutier looking real nice boutier odorata another couple of
months though you struggle to see it from all angles where all the growth
gets going so it's nice for the canopy off it just to see it so this year I
think I'm gonna grow there is a daylier down there but I might grow some
slightly lower stuff just so that from this angle you can always see you can
always see the boutier because it's a shame to hide it you know it's such a
wonderful plant and then what else have I got down here make see where I forgot
to I've got to spread that around that mulch here we've got some pesticides
this one's golden palms spreading itself about nicely this is and I've already
took a few divisions off it this year give them away so the main plant started
somewhere over here where this one is flowering now look that's a little flower
this one's flowering but then there's plant here plant here another one and
then this is this seems to be the biggest one so far if we follow all the
way around here there's another one here I think I showed this on one of my
previous videos about taking all the covers off the musubashoos I showed
you where these had spread to because I dug some more up from here and actually near
this pot yeah another one so this is really gonna fill out this area maybe
the wrong spot for it to be fair so we'll see how this progresses but be
nice and full this I just might not be able to get through the path right so I
spoke about at the beginning of the video take a wander down and look at the
news the new bed that's I've created very recently so I've rocked it I used
to have my compost bin here it's a little bit of a mess but you see my
compost bin here and then a pile of manure in this far corner I've done I've
created a slight raised bed it looks nice like that and then I've got my
gunnery from the front which wasn't doing anything I got this from a friend
a few years ago and just had it in a pot in the front
all right well it had done something but obviously it's gonna do far better in
the back now it's ready to ready to explode this now all this around this
and blood fish and bone around it in the planting all and around just help get it
established and feed it plenty of manure in this bed there's still quite a bit in
this corner that I've dug about so it's really this is gonna be a really rich
bed these should grow really well and the star of the show in this corner me
and a friend went and dug out some some bamboo so this is Berenda KR 5600
beautiful blue bamboo not sure you're really gonna be able to pick up how blue
it is on camera because this took some real effort digging this out and we've
probably brushed all the blue off it for this year but the new combs will come up
beautiful blue this was some effort to get this out of the ground so well worth
we're here we're at this plant so thank you thank you to Sean Barton for this
plant I really really appreciate that so if you ever watch this video thank you
very much so this one is gonna go into this spot here which is around two
meters two meter long two meter wide sorry and that'll spread it can have it
can have a decent chunk of this I'll let you have all this especially all that
maybe all the widest space here and I'm thinking maybe have a track of carpets
and over here that'll grow up pretty quick obviously the gunner below which
is gonna fill all the rest of the space then we'll see how that goes there's
probably not gonna be too much else going on in here maybe they will this
year because there's things that only just going in for the first year but
yeah be excited to see this bed grow especially this bamboo in Sean's garden
these bamboos must have been a good six seven meters tall really towering up and
above so when that goes in this corner and these trees come down tomorrow I'm
gonna lose all that height in the coming years these are gonna provide some
height so through that gap there you're not really gonna see the bamboo is gonna
fill all that area really really excited to see that let's take one last look at
the around the back of here before it all changes next month hopefully so you
can see in here climbing oh that's my old the pallets that used to be my
compass bin so this blue line then this is where ground level is for the outside
I want these trees to definitely be below this this level the plenty of
plenty to go out underneath we have changed on then at least all of that
that is underground I don't know we're gonna get with chainsaw as low as they
can get I'll be perfect for me yeah these are these are big big trees but
really get the scale of it on on film but yeah it's gonna certainly change
this area when when he's come down the other one again look a blue line so
where the ground level is again try and get lower than that this section is
obviously higher it does drop off significantly down here you should be
able to get in nicely to cut this I'm hoping get below ground level and I'm
gonna have a retaining wall somewhere through here leave it a bit of a gap if
they ever need to maintain this wall or anything because apparently people's
come up through the back there so that's where that's where we're gonna leave a
gap because I was originally gonna go all the way up to the wall but yeah I've
decided just against that just just to give access to the building if ever
needs to happen but yeah I can't wait to transform this space give me more
planting opportunities and then we're gonna be able to look back have some
sort of seating area yeah that's me falling over looking into the pond
standing this spot which you've never really probably never been on in on
camera before here fish looking that lovely today and then just they say you
can see yeah we're all issues tadpoles plenty of frog spawn who knows how much
of this will hatch and survive because obviously we've got the fish in the pond
but generally a lot of it does survive every year by hundreds of small baby
frogs and there's a hell of a lot of big frogs in this pond now or around the
pond so you can see some of them already hatched already hatched so we can watch
them grow my daughter loves watching the frog spawn well the baby frogs when
they've hatched there we go now we'll carry on back around might be footing as
I go because there's everywhere you go there's plants popping up some more
hostas here soil random pile of soil to move so I'm the water but still gonna
stay here and I think the overflow I'm gonna send down down here down and feed
the gunner because that's gonna take up again all this space as you can see the
decent size space but show you all know how big gunner cryptica gets absolutely
huge so that'll come right out and over the border somewhere but this pond will
eventually this bit I'll be made slightly smaller and the pop will come
around winding this way I'm hoping giving myself a good few meters maybe up
to three meters that's gonna give me plenty of room to get round so you've
all seen George's garden just how big is gunners get that's in the coming years
that's what I can expect hopefully and say I've not had this in the ground
before I'm looking forward to watching this one grow in the back plenty of
plants still in pots ready to get growing here under a doorknob there's a
nice pink to this but you can't really tell this one this is you'll be able to
see when the new shoots come up it does have lovely pink lovely pink hues to
this not actually sure where this one's gonna get planted just yet anyone that
hasn't watched his channel before the cobble path just show you the cobble path so the
paths gonna come from here we're gonna send it out here around and down through
the far through the far fence posts into that back section we've just come from
and then we'll continue the garden I can take all those panels out get the
planting like the rest of the garden because when you get to about here as
you see not really a lot's happened in this it's a bit overgrown wild now I
used to have a stream that ran from here cascaded down rounded in that went out
of action a couple year ago and I've just never got it sorted so it's finding
time for things in it so many jobs in the garden we've got some stuff popping
up in here now this burner is up lovely white color this really really white
can't remember what this one's called to be honest shall we have a look
Brunnera Dawson's white that's what that one is it's variegated white and green
this is when it comes up a podophyllum spotty dotty lovely plant see if it gets
knocked back by the slugs and snails though hopefully having it this close to
the pond get a bit of help from the frogs I'll do me a massive favor and in
this spot I have dug out I had three kindle hills in this spot I see one two
there was a third one here the idea behind having three of them in here looks
nice planted as a three and also it would have they're gonna grow up and
eventually it'd be a canopy for these two Dixonia antarctica tree ferns well
I've got a couple more on the way I don't think in a three footer somewhere
here pretty much where that is so that's probably gonna move because I'm thinking
like just just in this sort of area a three footer so we'll have a two footer
there this is the five footer slightly over that now because it's putting a
good bit of well not a good bit of size but a good few inches since I've had it
this five footer and then a three footer in there as well I still got a couple of
palms to grow up in there but I've also got come around here you'll see the
loquats here that'll put some size on I'm gonna let that get up and then
hopefully branch across and just just fill out this sort of space over here
just to give that little bit of overhead protection to the two well to at least
this smaller of the two two soon to be three three ferns as you can see it's
up I'd say it's been quite a mild a mild winter really and it's still the
still browned off but I'll leave these on so the new flushes out you can see
this they are starting to come now plenty of knuckles in there so I'll
leave these on and they cut them off once well I may cut them off I may not
see they're gonna if I don't cut these ones off they are gonna bury everything
that's below the ones on the bigger one they'll definitely stay on they will
stay on I just like it when it's got a bit more of a full crown even if they're
not you know they're not green but I like the look of it looks nice and
natural like that then watch my previous video you'll see that we've uncovered
the Musubashu bananas I always like it this time here when these are
unprotected now just gives just you're not looking at loads of covers and yeah
anyway I've seen this channel before you'd see how I had them protected with
the land drains works perfectly fine but it's not the best thing to look at all
winter especially now we're getting into spring and you're out in the garden more
you want to actually enjoy your plants and not see not see all them land drains
so these should be perfectly fine now starting to grow since I've cut them
back just see where they're pushing up a bit and this one can be cut back a bit
more if I need to because these grow pretty rapid when when I get going
anyone that's grown these I'm sure you know this one's go on 5G Sierra Buster
Campbell it's going quite well a couple of years in the ground now fills out a
space lovely nice evergreen backdrop would make a lovely hedge this one I
think this year should get even taller no taller than what the last year's
columns were but even if that maxes out at four meters they're perfectly
perfectly fine for me nice yeah it just really does give a nice
evergreen backdrop will not go into the greenhouse it's always a mess
avoid that one thanks for this one Shane still in a pot at the minute but yeah
lovely little plant right now the names avoided like escaping me so I remember
I'll put it on screen very annoying when you can't think of a name again this
will grow big big leaves be well worth to be a beautiful plant in the garden
well worth growing anyone who's into tropical exotic plants substitute
a good substitute for the gunner of this same sort of leaves grows massive
yeah it's a really nice plant as always the Mahonia softcrest looking
fantastic if we've covered that on all videos I don't need to show that off anymore
the Hellebores absolute profusion of flowers now they look fantastic for this
time of year when not much else is flowering yeah looks real nice not got
too many spring bulbs this year nothing nothing else is really flowering so this
this looks great and obviously I grow it for these these lovely leaves
did I have these planted last? yeah I think I did didn't I? this Schaefflera
just getting ready to flush you can see in there just about getting ready to
flush so this this compared to last year is going to look a bit different
because obviously I had that at the Boutiagris palm from over there that was
sunk in the ground in a pot here last year so that that filled a big space
here so this year it's gonna look quite low compared to compared to last year so
I'll have to adjust to that but in no time at all the Schaefflera will grow up
I can plant some other stuff in here just to fill out if I need I could
put some canna's in here for some instant height but yeah we'll see how
this progresses and then this is this is definitely one of my favorite palms
obviously we're back at the beginning but it's really short this time but this
one's a Trachycarpas Fortunii Cross Princeps it just seems to hold itself
really well that leaf it's not massive yet but yeah it just holds itself really
well so I'm looking forward to this one growing going away this year again this
will be the third year for this palm so so really on a third year that should
start to mortar let me get this plenty of water and feed this year get it going
when I start once it gets to a size like the one over there it starts to be more
impactful at the minute everything on this border especially is really quite
low no nothing's over nothing's over a foot and a half two foot so you just
so that's it guys I think that's a decent tour of the garden if there's
anything you'd like to like to know the names of or specifically go back to just
leave a comment below and we'll take a look and I can reply to you tell you
what it is because I obviously can't focus on every single plant in the
garden the video would be even longer than this half an hour one so yeah I
hope you've enjoyed the video please like comment and subscribe if you
already haven't I'll see you on the next monthly tour video
