g'day
welcome to i cultivate my name's steve
and today we're going to be looking at a
fascinating perennial
multiplier leaks have a look at these
these are multiplier leaks they're very
similar to their close cousin
normal leaks except for what they do
is they multiply by simply sprouting off
new buds
they're a fantastic vegetable to grow
because they taste just like normal
leeks
but with one exception they're perennial
the fact that they're perennial means
that they don't go through
the same sort of life cycle as your
normal
annual legs do they tend to not go to
seed
instead they'll produce these little
baby leaks off to the side
about the only downside of these leaks
is the fact that they don't tend to grow
to the same size as normal legs but
given that
we get these baby legs coming up all the
time i reckon i can live with that
the sorts of conditions that you need to
grow these leaks in are exactly the same
as normal leaks
they like a soil that is slightly acidic
probably around a ph of about 6.5
and in addition to that they are fairly
heavy nitrogen feeders so you do need to
make sure that you keep
a good solid amount of manure
up to them you can see here i have a
fair bit of manure this is a mixture of
horse manure cow and sheep manure in
addition to that
i like to give them a bit of chicken
manure as well which is of course quite
high in
nitrogen don't forget though that those
manures need to be well aged
so let's have a look at these multiplier
legs
so if we have a look at these these
leaks i break away the soil
you can see the parent leak just here
and you can see all these
small leak buds that have started to
grow away from the parent leak and these
are just simply a matter of just teasing
them away
and there is our young leak that we're
going to plant
in order to propagate this particular
vegetable
so what i'm going to do is just break
these apart
you can still see some buds here on the
parent leak which will develop into
others
although you can also see that i have
now got quite a few
new leaks in order to plant this leak
here the parent leak
that's going into our cooking
so here i have my bundle of baby leeks
that i've taken from the parent
multiplier leak and all i'm going to do
now is to plant these
in a row about 15 centimeters apart
it's important that you actually plant
them quite deep so i'd be going down to
um as much as say 50 or 60 millimeters
deep
making sure that we get those nice white
stems later as they grow
once you've got them in their trenches
backfill
give them a good water cover a mulch
and that's about it just remember though
that they do need a good
dose of feed they do need to be well
manured and a bit of
liquid fertilizer from time to time
doesn't hurt either
i hope you've found this video about
multiplier leaks informative
