The instinct to brood a clutch of eggs often kicks-in for many chickens. This is particularly prevalent in pure-breed chickens. This video describes how I have been able to manage the "broodiness" of my chickens.

G'day, welcome to iCultivate. My name's Steve and today we're going to be talking about broody chickens.
This girl here's gone broody and unfortunately it's something that we need to do something
about. I say unfortunately because really all she's doing is following her natural instincts
but her natural instincts haven't got a lot of point in my chuck yard because
I don't have a rooster and so therefore going broody is a meaningless thing
other than the fact that she's just following her natural instincts.
But we do need to do something about it because being broody means that they spend all their
time in the nesting box. It means that they don't eat the way they would normally do
and they can foul the box as well but we certainly do need to do something about it.
So I've read a number of methods for dealing with this. I've tried several including dunking
them in cool water to try to lower the body temperature, just simply moving them off the
nesting box but I've had no luck with these. Isolating them from the nesting box,
cooling them down by dunking them in water, none of these methods seem to have worked for me.
This is the only method that has worked. The idea is to keep them uncomfortable without
being cruel of course and to as a result of this keep the air moving around them
and by keeping the air moving around them to lower their body temperature and to cool them down a
little bit. I found that by keeping the girls in this box for two to three days has had success
in every instance and it has worked perfectly for me. I don't like it but it has been the only
thing that has worked. What you can see what I've done is I've just simply built a box here which is
approximately two feet square and it provides them enough room to be able to
be able to move around. Of course we have to make sure that there's enough water and food
and that they're protected from the elements with a suitable roof.
But anyway I think I might leave it at that because she's clearly quite distressed at the
fact that I'm just here giving her the attention that I'm giving her at the moment. So thank you
for listening I hope you've gained something from this and if you have any comments that you would
like to contribute to the discussion on YouTube or on our website it would be most appreciated.
