Join us on our adventure this week, full time vanlife - ing through Nevada and California. We polar plunge into ice cold Lake Tahoe, get stuck in the snow and need to self recover and get back down the mountain, urban stealth camp, wild camp in some gorgeous places, and so much more!
Today's shower brought to you by Lake Tahoe.
How's it going everybody? I'm Nikki Delventhal and this is my dog Camper Delventhal.
We lived in a Prius full-time for three years but now we're in a 4x4 Sprinter
and we're here to take you along on the wild ride. So fasten up your seat belts and let's
have some fun. Don't forget if you like what you see, like, subscribe, comment, share with
your friends, and turn on notifications. Camper and I would be so thankful. On last week's episode
my cousin Sarah joins us to live in the van for a few weeks. We take you night hiking to some hot
springs and Sarah has her first truck stop experience and urban camping experience. It was
a blast and we leave off overnighting in Reno. Morning Camper. That was not the best night's sleep.
Do not recommend the travel stop in Reno. Oh we got a little glimpse of the mountains back there
and the local wildlife. Boop. Good morning Sarah Berkowitz. Is this your favorite cousin?
Whoo we're ready for coffee.
I'm doing like the delirium dance. It's like you need six more hours of sleep or do you need six
more movie spots? I don't know. All right let's get out of here. First stop Lake Tahoe.
What a beautiful morning.
Perks of being at a rest stop. You got your dumpster. It's so loud. Let's go. All right big high fives.
Before we get into the mountains and then eventually into California we're going to
fill up gas because that is going to get expensive fast. Diesel number two.
All right first stop we have a 45 minute drive to Incline Village where we're going to get some
breakfast. We are headed to Incline Village through the mountain pass where Mount Rose is
and on the way is one of my favorite viewpoints of Lake Tahoe so we are making our first stop there.
Here it is. You're making friends everywhere you go Cam.
All right what do you guys say? You want to get some breakfast? Definitely. Yeah.
On a scale of one to ten how hungry are we? 7.5. Wow how about you camper?
Kidding you lady I'm always hungry. What kind of question is that? I'm a 12.
I remember driving this last year. We got 14 feet of snow and I put chains on my Breas.
It was so dumb. I love roundabouts. Well that was good. Sarah why don't you show them what happened?
Mess. Everything fell. Let this be a lesson. Make sure you latch your latches. First van casualty
won't be the last. It is 11 in the morning and we're getting burgers. Sounds weird but
Incline Burgers and Brews is so good. You have to come here if you're at Incline Village.
Oh yeah. Vegetarian baby. Yeah veggie burger. Party time. I really liked it.
Thank you. Have a good one. All right next up we're gonna go walk this off somewhere
and find a nice beach. All right camp you ready for the beach? I love Sand Harbor Beach. You do
have to pay to park but it's huge and it's great for winter access. That's a big stick camp. Good
job. Lake Tahoe has some of my favorite waters ever to swim in. I'm gonna jump in today. I'm
gonna polar plunge. I'm gonna polar plunge. I can barely put a pinky in. How's the water feel?
Freezing. Oh my goodness that is freezing. That is way too cold. Yeah I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna
polar plunge into Lake Tahoe in the middle of winter. What could go wrong? I cannot believe
I'm gonna do this. I can. You're getting a bathing suit. I'm getting gloves. We are definitely
turning on the heat for when I am done. Here we go. Just in case we don't come across a shower
we're gonna take a shower today in Lake Tahoe. Oh god. Oh frozen feet. Frozen feet.
Nice shower brought to you by Lake Tahoe. 60 seconds. That's how long you have to go? No I'm done.
I'm so done. I'm so done. That was insane. I feel pretty alive. I feel pretty cold.
That was so good.
This will get all the sand off. This is one of my favorite things for a van
is having a hose that you can hose things off and sand and stuff because it can get so dirty inside.
My feet are frozen. I'm putting them right next to the heater. Two options. We can stay in Lake
Tahoe and maybe do a little snowy winter hike or we can go another four and a half hours and
start getting to where it's a bit warmer. I like warm weather. All right the rest of the day is a
drive day. Let's put on toe socks and hit the road. Peace out.
This lake is gorgeous and I think technically some of it is BLM land so we're gonna check it out and
see if we can find a camp spot right on the water. Okay so this is the spot they were talking about
but nothing here is level. This does not look good. Grounds or RV parks or something that's
I have one more idea and we have 20 minutes before the sun goes down.
So another fun option we could see where the van behind us ends up going
because they're probably looking for a place to sleep.
Follow that van. Wow they move really fast. I don't know if we're gonna be able to follow them.
They're so fast. But we need to know where you're sleeping. Come back.
Hurry come back. Shoot just seems everything is closed for the winter. All right big pull off it
is. Wouldn't be the first time I slept on the side of a highway. Right on the river baby.
It's not very level though huh? Does that feel level? I'm a little bit to this way.
I think you're right. Let's go outside before it gets too dark.
Free. Cameron let's check it out. This is pretty amazing for a highway drop-off.
Help me down and then I'll help you down.
Split.
That was not supposed to happen.
All right. Pajamas. Dinner. Bed. And. Okay Rirkowitz what's on the menu tonight? Yogurt
or salad. Pretty generic. Yogurt? I kinda want salad. Why would you ask? I want yogurt.
Okay we could do yogurt. You can have salad. Which is your yogurt? This one? I'm not gonna
do yogurt. We're gonna do salad. It's actually the same. It's the same ingredients. It's like
the base is different but all the toppings are the same. Smells so good. Good right?
Yes I'm trying to work on my salad. You want some? It's because you really wanted yogurt.
Morning. Morning camper. All right what do we think? Hot springs or go straight down four hours?
Hot springs. Let's try them out. I think there's some about an hour down the road.
We're getting close. You can see the steam coming up from the rivers.
I'm gonna get a four by four on once we get up here. Okay that was a four by four. All right
here we go. Last time I did this I got stuck in my breeze. I think we have a four by four.
I have a lot of confidence in this van though. I have a lot of confidence in you.
Okay we are stuck right now so we're gonna try to reverse here and try to get following a little
bit. I'm gonna punch it and try to get up here. We are not gonna try to keep going. This is not good.
We're in a spot that's like really bad so I'm like very scared. This forward so I'm gonna
come right here. Okay we're gonna figure this out and be right back. So I'm kind of stuck in the snow
and I want to make sure I recover myself correctly. Okay so I'm gonna show you what's
happening. So I don't want to, I don't want to reverse anymore because I don't want to come up.
So yeah there's like kind of like an area to turn. I mean I could reverse this entire thing.
Bring the recovery boards so we get back and forth. Okay I'll talk to you soon Destin.
It's all ice under here. This is the most terrifying thing I've ever done.
We're gonna reverse out of this because there's no really safe place to turn around.
Sarah cam. Why don't you tell everyone what's going on while you get in? Okay well we went a bad path and
got stuck for a very long time but it looks like we're gonna survive this. We just got a little
more ways to go. Be very careful with this one for sure. Do you ever think there would be a day that
you reverse your entire way down a road? I'd rather, oh shut up, I would rather reverse out of a road than
possibly fall off this cliff. You guys that's a cliff edge. Like that is probably a good,
very far down. That's very far down. Before we even started going up here I was thinking about
the ghost town from last time when we literally, the brakes like weren't working. That was probably
the scariest moment of my life but um I think this tops that one. I think I want to take a 4x4 course.
Might be a good idea. We are crushing it. I think we're by the turnaround. Oh hell yeah.
Oh my god. We've been reversing for like two miles. Come on. You got it. We're free. Look at this.
We're going forward. I don't know. I think that was enough adventure for today. We got to keep
getting south and we got to get to Lone Pine before the sun goes down.
Sarah we are literally above the clouds right now. You're not freaking out. Now we are in the
clouds. All right guys we made it to Lone Pine. First stop we are finding a shower. We have been
driving all day. We need to get some movement before we clean up. You ready to do a little
a camp spot. We are going to wild camp tonight so we're going to go out towards the mountains a
little bit. Ready to camp? Of course I'm ready. You got the camper noise down. Yeah all these
have no... that one says no camping. I was hoping that it got better from the last time I came here
but this is crazy. This entire place has been shut down from camping. There are only a few spots.
There's trash everywhere. This is what happens when people don't follow leave no trace ethics
and they don't clean up after themselves and they don't respect the land or other people.
Beautiful places like this get shut down. It is such a shame. If you have not read leave no trace
ethics do not go outdoors until you have. There are some things you may not realize
are a problem that we're doing. If you go somewhere clean up leave it better than when you came.
You guys we've literally been driving for 45 minutes looking for a spot and we finally got it.

You guys hear that? There's nothing to it and it's not even bad.
Honestly this is a workout on its own. We should just be going like this.
I don't know. It's fun. It's like challenging figuring out how to drive in different terrains.
I like to challenge myself in other ways. Because I already know myself this is not
going to be the last time we get stuck. I forgot my keys. Terrible.
