306 horsepower. Supposedly. If he beats me, it's okay because it's Honda Power.
So this is a win-win for me. I love the pull sound of that thing. It's like, wow!
Am I going? Is this me? This is you. This is all me. This is you. This is the you matchup.
This is the me matchup. This is another episode of this versus that.
This is a very NAD matchup. Everything I love. Everything I love.
It's Hondas. It's Toyotas. It's Honda's inside of Toyotas. It's everything. It's everything.
Look who it is. Look who it is. Look what we have. No one knows who anyone is.
Okay, we're all wearing masks, but I got to tell you, I met this young man when he was driving for Jerry Tsai at Pacific Rim.
Came over, didn't speak any English. They drove an S13 street car.
Became a Formula Drift champion. Became a Time Attack champion.
And blended everything that I love all together. Dai Yoshihara, I'm so excited to have you here.
What's up, guys? Thanks for having me, man.
Oh, so excited to see you. So excited for this. Tell us what you have here.
I feel like you could tell us what he has here.
Dude, are you kidding me? I could go on for days. This is my dream car.
Dropped it at SEMA a couple years ago.
Wait, wait, wait. If this is your dream car, then why was it her favorite pick and not yours?
Oh, I know. Really?
I picked this car for my favorite car at SEMA the year he dropped it.
And this is actually Chris Marion's old chassis. And when you left Japan, this was the car that you left behind.
This is your dream chassis. Even more than that 240SX you've said.
Actually, yes. I love his interview style.
It's just yes or no. He tells you, and then you say yes or no.
I mean, Levin front end, right?
Yeah.
Championship white paint with TRD Pro Cavalry blue on the inside, which tells us that it's not quite a Toyota.
Like, oh my God. 15.9 BBS, custom BBS.
Dude, this car is so... Dai, can we open the hood and show everybody why the this of this versus that is here?
I think that's it.
Oh my God. Look at it. Spoon valve, spoon valve cover.
Oh, I'm so excited right now. This is a 2015 K20C1 from a CTR, FK CTR.
And you did this before Honda was even doing the crate motor. So it does have the stock TD04 too?
Yep.
So it is essentially the Honda crate motor that Honda is selling now, but before they were selling it.
Right.
306 horsepower still?
Supposedly, yeah.
Currently, Nads is making it look like Dai Yoshihara is just a pretty face who's good at driving.
But I promise he knows about the car as well.
I'm sorry. I can't help it. I love this car.
S2000 gearbox, right?
If you guys would like to watch Dai talk, that'll be on the bonus channel.
I just, I love everything that you did.
Dai, what's your favorite part of the car for you?
Of course, this engine.
So it's basically just stock.
And the reason why I choose this engine is it makes like over 300 horse as a stock, right?
So I wanted to just keep it as reliable as possible.
So I don't have to really worry about anything.
And it's already good enough power to do everything.
Drifting, grip driving, and today we're going to do drag racing, right?
Yeah. Do you know how much the car weighs?
I don't know.
2,600. I heard it was about 2,500.
Hold your hood up at least.
No, no, no, no.
What am I doing? I could be the hood drop.
My favorite thing about the car, which we haven't gotten to yet,
is that the switch box in the middle looks like a switch box for Hydros.
It literally looks like a lowrider switch box.
Can we put 15 nines on this? It's like such an OG size for this.
And this is like a Pandem kit too, correct?
Right. So I asked Miura-san to make some cool kit and he did it.
Now it's production, but he actually did it.
So this is the prototype kit.
Yes.
That's cool.
You guys see this door?
You don't hear a thing.
Nice. So good.
You just hear the rubber squish.
And look how easy it closes.
But Hurt's door, I must do that.
No, here's mine.
Man, look how clean this car is in here.
And the carbon dash should be over here too.
So are you ready to drag race?
Yes.
Are you going to go straight or are you going to mongee all the way down?
We'll see.
We can obviously go on and on and on and on about a car like this all day long.
Instead, we're going to let Nads go on and on about the other car and not let anyone talk.
This episode is brought to you by HP Tuners.
They make all sorts of tuning, data logging, diagnostics tools.
They even have mobile apps for tracking drag and lap times.
Also, check out their Instagram or hit the link below to see what's available.
Do you think you're going to let them talk this time?
I'm sorry. I can't help it.
What's up, guys?
What's going on, man? How are you?
Good, good, good.
I'm Ryan Eversley, and I'm pretty convinced I could just let you tell me all about it.
No, that's what he just did before.
We need someone else's voice on this episode.
Okay, I'm going to let you go.
Ryan, tell us what you brought today.
So in terms of effort provided for this event, I had to do pretty much nothing.
Eimer Engineering built this amazing car for Dai.
The thing looks so cool.
I showed up at the airport.
This is waiting on me.
And all the hard work and effort was done at the factory.
So this is a 2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition.
It's got the same engine and running gear as the standard Type R, which is still pretty...
The Touring?
Yeah, exactly.
However, this car is on a Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 tire.
So it's got a little bit better grip.
It's also got a much lighter BBS forged alloy wheel.
The whole point of this car was let's knock some weight out of it.
And I think it was kind of because they saw the pandemic coming.
And they were like, all of our buyers are going to be gaining weight.
Let's lose a little.
So I was like, I don't mind if I showed up a little fluffy today.
The COVID-15.
Yeah, exactly.
I thought it was 50.
It shaved about 50 pounds.
About 50 pounds, exactly.
3,075.
That's right.
So they've done that by getting rid of some soundproofing and material in the car that you don't really need if you're trying to go faster.
I love the way this is all a throwback to the original Type R mythology, which is where you have to like less weight to go faster and everything.
And the Phoenix Yellow.
Phoenix Yellow.
It's a throwback to the old school DC2 and the original Civic Type R in Japan.
I love that you guys preserved the color and everything.
And you also say what Dai built and what Eimer Engineering brought is amazing.
But this is available off the showroom floor.
Exactly.
This is showroom floor.
This is the power of Honda.
Yeah.
Fun fact.
When we called Honda and said, hey, can we get a Type R for this race?
They said, who's going to drive?
We said, Nads.
And they sent their driver.
At the time when this dropped in 2017, it had the Nurburgring front wheel drive record.
I think it was 7.43.40.
At the time, this was the Godzilla of the ring.
Can we take a look?
Yeah, absolutely.
So we brought it up yesterday.
It's got the same interior that you're used to seeing with the fancy red seats.
Oh, I love it.
Stock underneath the hood.
All the stuff you guys have seen before.
And again, in terms of effort put in today, Dai's got me covered.
But if he beats me, it's okay because it's Honda power.
So it's a win-win for me.
I still go home.
I'm going to be just fine.
I'm going to be just great.
This is engine versus engine.
Front wheel drive versus rear wheel drive.
Racer versus racer.
I feel positively underpowered.
And you can buy this engine now as a crate, right?
Now, this is also available as a crate mode.
Yes, absolutely.
It's basically sort of a turn key drop and swap that you can put into it.
Yeah, so Dai's and Eimer Engineering guys, they kind of did the first iteration of that.
And now HPD offers a full-on ECU, the whole computer, everything you need to do.
So you can put it in there and you can run it pretty much the same as what we have here.
And you can put it into, you know, a cool car like that.
You can put it into like a, you know, a club car, a kit car, things like that.
And I think that was the whole idea behind it.
Someone just explained to me Earth Dreams technology.
Oh, yeah.
As a Volkswagen kid, I don't know what that is.
That's a huge, huge thing.
Yeah.
I don't know if you remember the F1 car where they put the earth all over the side of it.
I think it stopped there.
I'm not really sure.
It goes back to Soichiro-san, which is like essentially like...
Man, I wish I didn't ask now.
Now that Nads is talking.
Anyway, let's go race.
All right, so it's heads up for the first race.
500 feet, 1,000 feet, 1,500 feet.
Most people tend to meet in the middle and go to 1,000.
How fast did I go?
I have no clue.
Same motor, same car.
He's got 400 pounds on you, though.
Yeah, yeah.
And that's just driver to driver.
So let's just shoot in the middle, 1,000?
Sure.
Yeah.
Cool.
All right.
If need be, I can ballast him.
All right.
Prediction, Dai all day.
Same motor, lighter car.
I love Dai.
I love that car.
So my vote's with Dai.
Predictions?
Yeah.
You want a prediction from me?
Yeah.
It's like telling me which one of my children I want to pick.
For the record, it's my daughter.
But okay, I shouldn't say that.
Oh, my God.
I don't know what to say, but as much as Dai is my boy, the Honda badge is my thing.
So I got to go FK.
Classic Honda versus Toyota.
Sure, the Toyota's Honda swapped, but look at that thing.
Just look at it.
You know, Phoenix yellow is one of my favorite car colors ever.
And, you know, I'm a Honda guy, too, you know, secretly.
But right now, I'm a Roller guy.
I'm going to go with Dai Ishihara Honda Powered A86.
Well, it feels foolish to bet against a yellow car with red seats, but this one's lighter.
So I give it to Dai.
Race car versus OEM.
I'm going race car.
I'm going with my dude, Dai.
Dude, Dai's here.
That's all I care about.
That one says R on it.
Is that it?
Corolla.
It's Dai, dude.
I'm so obsessed with this.
I low-key want to see a Manji all the way down.
Now, it is.
It's more of a track fun weekend car.
He's, like, so casual, so it's a fun weekend car.
Look at this.
It's like a full insane build.
This is a fun weekend car for a Formula Sprint champion.
Yeah, exactly.
It's not like you.
Or me.
We could tow it behind the Jeep.
Might be just as quick.
Alright, so we got heads up.
1,000 feet.
CTR.
For CTR Powered A86.
Not a pedal fest leaving the line.
That was, like, spinning front wheels, spinning back wheels.
And then Dai ended up walking on them.
That's the beauty of no prep, not drag cars.
No one has the advantage.
What's a better drag car?
One with the 20-inch wheels or one with the 15-inch wheels?
If you judge it off that one, neither.
Oh, my God.
Neither one went to 1,000 feet.
So they raced to 500.
They're not drag racers.
We'll call it what it is.
He's here at one.
He took the win.
Is there a tight bar button you can hit now, Ryan?
It's right under his thumb right there.
Alright, Dai took the first one.
Oh, my God.
I love the pull sound of that thing.
Did it feel like the Civic was sort of catching up for a second,
then you started to walk on top?
This is my favorite part of all of our reviews
because we're so far away that we always do it.
We're so wrong.
Every episode, we're like, oh, he's got it.
It was super close.
Is it officially one?
I mean, that was two, right?
Yeah, it was two.
I think the car is broke.
It looks like you won the reliability contest.
I'm going to go pick them up.
Yeah, you want to tow them back?
Yeah, I'll bring them back.
Alright.
So, Dai, it's probably pretty weird when you win a race,
but then the other car has to come get you.
It was a really good battle, right?
Yeah, we were super close on that one.
I was like, okay.
Do you think if you went all the way to 1500 on the last one,
you would have caught him?
I think that's where this car was making its strengths
because you were having to shift a lot more than I was,
and I was just letting it ride out.
So, I was like, alright, we got a battle here.
And then, unfortunately, we had a problem.
So, yeah.
No, it's all good.
It's going to be a good battle.
It's all good, man.
Is this where the secret sauce is?
No, so good.
Yeah.
