Will you be able to crack this tricky endgame???
Do we play this? Or have we?
I used to be, you know, that's the trouble. That's the trouble.
I used to be, but am I now? Yeah.
I think the guy wants to get away, but I'm just, I have an inkling.
Oh, it's fly away?
Yay! Yay!
Watch it! Watch it, you're crossing the line.
Right there would have been good.
Yeah?
Then you blocked in your bishop.
Well, don't, don't do that.
This is not the way sometimes.
But now, now I have to make a good move.
I messed up. I apologize to my fans.
Also, your bishop. Now I can play, like, rook over or something.
Both levels?
You can.
It's that way, you know.
Don't worry about it. It could be worse.
Right, it could.
Don't worry about it. I'm your friend.
Well.
Oh, that. Okay, hold on, hold on.
Okay, now that we got that all settled.
Let's do something fun.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's go over here.
Okay.
Okay, okay.
Wait over here.
What's that?
Did you lose yet?
No, of course I didn't lose. I have superior intelligence and good looks.
What do you, how can I lose?
First hand knowledge, yes, he does.
What? Oh, good looks and everything?
No, you're losing.
Oh, hey!
I asked him whether you ever lose and he said he has first hand knowledge of losing.
Which is factual, so don't say anything.
I was going to say something.
If I win any of you here in the Olympics, scrape it off.
Oh, please. Scrape this.
All right, gentlemen.
Okay, all right, I'm up, I'm up.
Run away, run away.
It could be worse.
What are you doing, man?
I worked playing ducky, but he got to go though.
All right, I was going to take that pawn.
I want you to know, but I think two rooks is good.
Yeah?
Don't you?
I have a slight edge.
Okay, a slight edge.
I don't know if I want to play now, you've just been playing.
I'd like to play Carlini, man.
He's a nice guy.
Fasting?
I'd like to play Carlini.
Carlini's a nice guy.
He's fasting?
Is Eddie fasting?
He shouldn't be fasting.
That's something else?
Who doesn't know what fasting is?
I know.
I'm not so sure that's a good idea.
Carlini, I remember the good old days, man.
I remember some of the good old days when you was there.
I know.
I really miss you.
I know, I miss me too, but that's something else.
Generally, one rook is better than one.
That's what I heard.
Okay, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
Okay, so let me go here a second.
I take kicks, you know.
I do take kicks.
Good game, Carl.
That was fun.
Thanks for the game.
Yeah, I loved it.
Have you retired yet, man?
What's that?
Have you retired yet?
I did, I did retire.
Thank you.
Thank you for asking.
You're lucky.
Why?
I almost had to quit.
Oh.
Unless you want to grab a corner, maybe you will, Carlino.
I couldn't do that, Ed.
You know how I feel about you.
I saved you from having the board wiped with you.
Oh, you did?
I did?
Yes.
I helped you.
I wouldn't remember that.
Yeah, thank you.
Thank you.
You came just in the nick of time.
Just like old Nick.
Really?
Yes.
Okay, there it is.
What?
Is that the calls from the drop?
No.
The pawns are frozen.
Those are.
Let me just figure this out.
Let's go faster.
Let me just figure this out.
All right.
I think he decided a P4, though.
Hey, Mike.
Good to hear from you.
I appreciate that.
You have a good day.
I think that person is in the bathroom.
Oh, okay.
Is he beating you yet?
Yeah.
Oh, my goodness.
Thank you.
Damn it.
I mean, if anybody is to win, it's me.
Looks like it.
No.
All right.
Good game.
Okay.
Sweet.
You want a rematch?
Yeah.
That's right.
Hey, guys.
Brent here.
And a great game between Jeff and Elijah here.
And it felt like Jeff was the attacker the majority of the time.
And Elijah was just kind of like, bring it on.
Let's see what you got.
Which is a hard style to play.
It looks easy when you're watching it.
But when you're the one kind of inviting the attack, it is.
It's tough to play that, man.
Especially against a shark like Jeff.
And we come down to this endgame here.
And I think, let's see.
They decided.
I think, yeah.
At this position, Jeff and Elijah decided it was a draw.
It certainly looks like it, right?
Opposing Kings.
I mean, can't get any headway here.
But one thing about endgame that's really tricky is that it's, most of the time, very, very counterintuitive.
Like, if you think it's a draw, it's probably not a draw.
If you don't think it's a draw, it's probably a draw.
So, knowing that, in this position, if you guys saw the eval bar, it was not a draw, right?
And maybe Jeff realized that at the end.
He was like, okay, draw.
I mean, if so, that was a great move by Jeff.
And let's figure out where it was.
So, in this position, they both had opportunities to win this endgame.
It is super tricky.
King pawn endgames are, I mean, rook pawn endgames are tricky.
These are tricky as well.
So, let's go over how they both could have had it in this endgame.
So, in the game before it was played, it went from 5.8 to negative 7.1.
Will be another move for white here.
This is a great endgame to learn from.
Yes.
One idea is to put your opponent in zoog.
And one way you can do that is h4.
Yes.
Prevent this pawn from pushing as well as this pawn, right?
It slowly reduces your opponent's options here.
What are you going to do for black?
So, you make a waiting move, a3.
And now you have the majority here.
So, you can kind of eventually jam up that pawn there.
And this is kind of what the computer recommends.
But you can see how this is not going to be good for black here.
So, just that one move, right?
Hard to see.
And going over here, I think in this position, this was a winning endgame for Elijah.
But he accepted a draw in the game.
Okay, no move was played.
But I think white is going to be completely blocked in.
What are you going to do?
h3, then just h4.
And running out of options here.
What are you going to do?
And you're kind of cut off here.
And then now black can invade.
And going back here, instead of h3, if you play something like g3,
then just g4 and you lock it up.
So, I think that was the theme of this endgame,
is to kind of make the move that locks up your opponent, puts them in zoog.
Like, no matter what they move, it's not going to be good.
But all this is easier said than done.
It is super hard when you're the one playing.
And stuff like this, when it looks symmetrical,
looks like things can't really be done,
it's just counterintuitive.
It's very, very tricky.
So, very, very tricky endgame.
But great gameplay by both.
Nice attack and defense game.
And it gave us a great endgame to learn from.
Nice and done, boys.
Hope you guys enjoyed it.
