Writer-director Greta Gerwig (Lady Bird) has crafted a Little Women that draws on both the classic novel and the writings of Louisa May Alcott, and unfolds as the author’s alter ego, Jo March, reflects back and forth on her fictional life. In Gerwig’s take, the beloved story of the March sisters – four young women each determined to live life on her own terms -- is both timeless and timely. Portraying Jo, Meg, Amy, and Beth March, the film stars Saoirse Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Eliza Scanlen, with Timothée Chalamet as their neighbor Laurie, Laura Dern as Marmee, and Meryl Streep as Aunt March.
Let's take a look behind the scenes at our movie Little Women.
Little Women was written right here. One of these classics of all time was born.
It's important because it holds what it was to be a woman back then.
Young women taking on life, it couldn't be more timely.
This is a very important piece of writing.
It's a film for our time.
It is time for this generation to have something that will really connect with them.
Greta has cast this film beautifully.
I was gobsmacked when I read the cast list.
It's an extraordinary group of actors.
The level of talent I felt in awe of and very intimidated by.
Meryl Streep means so much to so many people.
That one person that everyone's grown up watching.
I may not always be right, but I'm never wrong.
We're very fortunate to be able to film in Massachusetts and the story took place here.
The March House is run down on the outside, but it's a beautiful jewel box on the inside.
We studied the real Alcott House.
Every bit of it has been crafted with so much authenticity.
When you start there, you end up with something spectacular.
Greta is a wonderful, wonderful writer.
She wrote the lines in the script with these dashes.
When one line starts and another line should come in.
You're all talking over the top of one another.
It creates this symphony of sound.
We've got to be really on it.
It is in a rhythm, it's not in a random.
On a take, I would see her listening.
She knows when something's right by how it sounds.
Mr. Lawrence sent it.
Good.
Greta is so emotionally intelligent, which is key for something like this.
Did you just have french fries?
I did not, but I smell that as well.
Can you get me some?
Perhaps I should go west.
Perhaps you should stick around.
I really feel like I've made friends.
I've had a wonderful time with those girls.
It's a timeless story.
People keep going back to it throughout their lives.
We're going to see things differently now.
The stories stay with us and keep wanting to be repeated.
Amy, come on!
It's a testament to her writing and her spirit that Louisa wrote
about a world we can all relate to.
