in the early months of 2013
the entire ontario urban exploring
community
descended upon oakville ontario to
explore
what was then the most expensive home in
canada
the edgemere estate former home of peter
gilligan
owner of mattamy homes had been put on
the market
for a record-breaking price of 45
million dollars
[Music]
in 2007 peter gilligan and his wife
divorced
and this huge mansion went on the market
a massive auction was held for the
contents of the home and property
leaving the home basically an empty
shell with staircases
bathtubs and more ripped out and sold
this sprawling 14 acre estate with
nearly 1
000 feet on lake ontario was priced at
45 million dollars canadian
making it the most expensive private
home in the country at that time
the edgemere grounds date back to 1907
when a toronto jeweler purchased the
estate
to build a rustic country home he then
commissioned a renowned
landscape architect to create
one-of-a-kind gardens and ponds
many of those historic pieces remained
on the estate
alongside the mansion the 32 000
square foot stone mansion was built in
the early 1900s
by peter gilligan president of one of
the largest construction firms in canada
matami homes the home included 9
bedrooms
17 bathrooms a 20-seat home theater
a games room and many details very
rarely seen in a new construction the
grounds
featured a baseball diamond a rock
waterfall
swimming pool gazebo a guest cottage
and breathtaking views over lake ontario
according to research by my friend germ9
peter gilligan and his wife divorced in
2007
and the edgemere estate went on the
market following the sale to a developer
a live auction was held at the property
to sell as many of the furnitures
and architectural pieces as they could
the auction
included over 100 images of furniture
fixtures appliance windows
and other unique pieces that were
available this redevelopment
of what was once a landmark property in
oakville
came with very much resistance from
locals
while construction workers were milling
about on the property waiting for their
shifts to end
i slipped in around the fence and headed
inside the mansion to explore it
wandering from room to room i was amazed
at the sheer size of this home
what would anyone ever want to do with
this much space
