Join us as we learn about these incredible hunters of the north, from their silent flight to their amazing winter-white feathers. You'll discover how they survive in the freezing Arctic, what they love to eat, and why some of them travel thousands of miles south each winter!
Today, we're going to adventure into the world of snowy owls. Snowy owls are typically found in the
Arctic regions of North America, Europe, and Asia. But there's even more to discover about
these amazing creatures. First off, let's talk about their super senses. A snowy owl's hearing
is so good, they can detect prey up to half a mile away. And this is because snowy owls have
asymmetrical ears, which help them pinpoint the location of sounds with incredible accuracy.
It's like being able to hear a tiny mouse running from two to three football fields away.
And when it comes to seeing, snowy owls have large eyes that let in lots of light,
even when it's dark. They have lots of light-sensitive cells called rods,
which are more sensitive to light than the color-sensitive cones in human eyes.
Snowy owls are not only amazing hunters, but they're also quite the athletes in the sky as well.
They have powerful wings, usually about four to five feet wide, and can fly without making a sound.
And their feathers are so soft and fluffy that they can sneak up on their prey without ever
being noticed. They can fly up to 60 miles per hour, making them super fast. Snowy owls are also
big eaters. They love to feast on small mammals like lemmings, mice, and even rabbits. In fact,
a snowy owl can eat up to 1,500 lemmings in just one year, and they don't even chew their food.
They swallow it whole.
Snowy owls are also quite heavy, which helps keep them warm in the cold.
They are one of the heaviest owls in North America, weighing up to six and a half pounds. Wow.
Female snowy owls have dark bars on their feathers, while male snowy owls tend to be
whiter. However, both male and female owls may become whiter with age.
Snowy owl moms and dads work together to care for their young.
The males bring the food, and the females stay at the nest to protect the owlettes.
Snowy owls are tough and strong. They'll attack wolves and foxes to protect their babies.
They're even strong enough to knock down a full-grown human bee.
Snowy owls build nests by digging a shallow hole in the ground on a slightly elevated spot.
They can lay lots of eggs, sometimes up to 14.
Snowy owls are constantly moving in search of food and nesting areas.
They can travel thousands of miles every year.
And sometimes they travel south from the Arctic during the winter.
This is called an eruption, but it doesn't happen every year.
It's really sad, but snowy owl populations are getting smaller and smaller.
They're now considered a vulnerable species, and this is due to many reasons,
including habitat loss, climate change, and even human actions.
Well, hey, guess what? Now we all know just a little bit more about snowy owls.
