Don't Climb THIS To Outrun Lightning

A thunderstorm was quickly moving through the French Alps, but I decided to speed run Via Ferrata Curalla anyway. It was an epic cliff face climb that forced me to act fast with danger on the horizon. Stunning views and heart-pounding adrenaline made this an adventure to remember.

Feel that wind coming up? Yeah. That's a little crazy. Supposed to be lightning moving through
in a bit, so I'm trying to make it through here before that lightning comes through.
It looks like it's right over there. I am in the town of Passy right now. I will be tackling the
Via Ferrata de Corrala. It's an AD plus rating, which I don't actually remember what that rating
means, but I think it's kind of moderate, a little bit less than moderate maybe, something like that.
Maybe not. It's about an hour and a half to complete, and I'm hoping that I complete it
before some lightning moves in. Supposed to be a lightning storm moving through in a couple hours,
a bit. That's cool. Okay, another one. It's got these stabilizing things here, so that's cool.
Wow. Single wire bridge coming up.
Always clipped into one at all times.
Oh, look at that. Beautiful. Nice little traverse coming up. Walking the park. Walking the park.
A little wood plank bridge. Just walking on the side of the cliff, you know, the usual.
Barmer house. Okay, let's see how the Barmer house is doing. No hands. There's a picture of
a guy doing this with no hands, and I just think that sounds a little crazy, but you know what?
They say, when in Rome, or when in France, when in the former Roman Empire, gotta give a shot.
I like it. Super ledgy. Pretty easy so far.
Wow. Hey, birdie friend. This is pretty sweet, man. Not that hard. Walking on a ledge,
looking at this beautiful valley in the Alps. Come on, man. Best part is it's free.
If you have your own gear, the Via Ferrata's are free. When did I start? I don't remember.
Look at that. Just out for a little walk. A little walk in the French Alps. Beautiful.
here. Mont Blanc behind me. A bit of exposure. So far, the storm is holding off, although it's
supposed to be lightning moving through in a bit, so I'm trying to make it through here before that
lightning comes through. It looks like it's right over there. Walking out on the flake.
Haven't had to use my rest carabiner yet on this one.
Cool. Let's see where he fits in. Apparently, you're supposed to do this bridge with no hands,
because that's what the picture has. So that is the recommended way. According to the sign,
that's the recommended way to do it. Okay. Oh, this one's easier because the other one was like
tilted, like it wasn't level. This one is at least level. I feel like, yeah, that's way easier
when the wood beam is level. Oh, sweet. I think it mentioned something about an arete. This must
be the arete. And then you don't see the down yet. Up this arete, and then maybe down the other side.
One shot for you. Hang over this. Feel that wind coming up? Yeah. Nice.
Feels good. Refreshing airflow right there. Up that gap.
Down here. A little around the way. A little peekaboo around the way.
Once again, the picture is of a crazy French man with no hands
doing the bridge with no hands. That's how they do it in France, okay? You cannot do it with
no hands. Oh, I wonder if this is the top. I don't see anything else over there.
This might be the end. Oh, no. Oh, no. But voila. It's so beautiful.
This beam snapped. It feels a little bouncy. That would not be cool, man.
Difference between walking on rock and metal and wood that has been out in the weather for
who knows how long. Final push? Possibly. I don't see anything else over there.
Oh. Is it over? It's over all too soon, I think. Looks like we beat the lightning, so
excellent. A job well done. A little less than an hour for this one, and I got to say that was
pretty sweet. Epic views. Not too difficult. I could see kids doing that. It seemed pretty
family-friendly, so if you're a beginner, advanced beginner, I don't know. Even I think my first
Via Ferrata was harder than that one, so short. I mean, obviously, if you're scared of heights,
it might be tougher to do because the exposure, you're hanging on the edge of the cliff. Those
traverses were beautiful. Get out there, find your adventure, and be infamous. Infamous.
