every 6 years a mysterious space rock
named Bennu makes a close pass by Earth
at first glance it might seem like
nothing more than a small dark dusty
chunk of ancient rock but what
scientists recently discovered inside it
is turning heads and raising big
questions bennu isn't just any space
rock it formed around 4.6 billion years
ago right when our solar system was just
coming together and inside it
researchers have found something
extraordinary molecules that may have
played a role in the origin of life on
Earth but here's where it gets even more
intriguing some of these molecules might
be linked not just to life but to
consciousness itself yes you read that
right some scientists believe that these
ancient chemical clues hidden inside
Bennu could support the idea that
consciousness began even before life
emerged in fact Nobel Prizewinning
researcher argues that consciousness
might be a fundamental part of the
universe so what exactly did they find
in the asteroid Bennu rock samples and
why are scientists claiming that the
Bennu asteroid might contain evidence of
consciousness well it all started in
2023 on a sunny morning in the Utah
desert a spacecraft returned to Earth
after one of the most epic journeys in
the history of human exploration it made
a trek of more than two billion miles
inside was a capsule containing a
treasure from the distant past a sample
of rock and dust from an ancient
asteroid named Bennu bennu is a spinning
top-shaped asteroid just 500 m wide it's
like a time capsule that holds the
secrets of our solar systems formation
dating back over 4.5 billion years made
of loose rubble Bennu is thought to
contain primordial compounds including
organic molecules that may have
contributed to the rise of life on Earth
when the Osiris Rex spacecraft touched
down on its surface in October 2020 it
gathered these fragments which could
shed light on the building blocks of our
own planet the spacecraft opened a
robotic arm and collected about 120 g of
black dust from the 500 m wide space
rock packed it into a capsule and
brought it back to Earth in 2023 when
scientists finally opened the capsule
that had traveled millions of kilometers
from space they were completely amazed
the sample collected from asteroid Bennu
was in perfect condition untouched
uncontaminated and exactly as they had
hoped even more surprising the amount of
material inside was more than expected
despite enduring the extreme conditions
of space and re-entry to Earth the
precious sample survived the entire
journey safely offering scientists a
rare and exciting look into the early
days of our solar system to unlock the
secrets hidden in this ancient material
NASA shared portions of the sample with
scientists around the world by studying
it closely researchers hoped to find
important clues about how life began
when scientists began studying the tiny
grains of dust from asteroid Bennu they
made an exciting discovery this ancient
space rock contains the basic chemical
ingredients needed for life inside the
sample they found a rich mix of minerals
and thousands of organic compounds these
include 14 of the 20 amino acids that
life on Earth uses to build proteins and
all four of the ring-shaped molecules
that make up DNA now this doesn't mean
there was ever life on Bennu itself but
what it does suggest is something even
more fascinating that asteroids like
Bennu might have carried these life
forming ingredients to Earth crashing
into our planet billions of years ago
and possibly helping life get its first
spark in a way the origins of life on
Earth might have come from the stars the
study has also found an array of
minerals and salts suggesting water was
once present on the asteroid ammonia
which is important for biochemical
reactions was discovered in the sample
too some of these compounds have been
seen in space rocks that have fallen to
Earth but others haven't been detected
until now based on all these discoveries
scientists are now saying that if
asteroid Bennu collides with Earth or
even another planet in our solar system
that has suitable conditions for life it
could give rise to a new form of life
just as similar asteroids would have
done to the early Earth but hold on
there's even more just when scientists
thought they had seen it all a new
discovery from the Bennu sample has left
everyone stunned some researchers now
believe that this ancient space rock
might contain particular molecules that
could have formed crystallin formations
that some scientists believe are key to
consciousness
these formations may have been present
among organic molecules for a 100
million years before genes existed
enabling the earliest forms of
decision-m and
self-organization into life the
prevailing theory of consciousness is
that humans manufacture it inside the
brain that it boils down to a
computation but Dr steuart Hammeroff and
Nobel Prizewinning physicist Roger
Penrose have a very different idea and
they've been talking about it for years
they believe that consciousness doesn't
actually come from the brain but from
something much bigger a kind of quantum
energy field that exists throughout the
entire universe according to Dr roger
Penrose and Dr steuart Hammeroff the
brain isn't the source of consciousness
instead they suggest that the brain
works more like a receiver or a
processing device similar to how a radio
picks up invisible signals from the air
and turns them into music or voice so if
the brain is just the receiver where is
the signal coming from penrose and
Hamarov propose that it comes from a
fundamental level of the universe a kind
of quantum energy field that exists
everywhere all the time this field they
believe may carry the building blocks of
consciousness itself here's where it
gets even more interesting inside every
cell in our body especially in the cells
of our brain there are tiny structures
called microtubules think of
microtubules as microscopic tubes or
scaffolding that help cells keep their
shape and perform basic tasks but
Penrose and Hammeroff believe that these
microtubules aren't just structural
supports they may be incredibly
important for how consciousness works
they suggest that microtubules are the
place where the brain connects with the
quantum world in other words
microtubules might be sensitive enough
to interact with quantum energy at an
extremely small scale this is the
foundation of their theory called
orchestrated objective reduction or ORC
O for short the idea is that when a
quantum field collapses which means it
picks one outcome from many possible
ones it creates a tiny flash of
awareness these quantum collapses don't
just happen randomly they happen in a
very organized way inside the
microtubules
each collapse could produce a small
moment of consciousness and because
these events happen constantly they
might come together to form everything
we experience our thoughts feelings
perceptions and even our sense of self
dr hammeroff calls this mysterious field
of energy
protoconsciousness almost like a
dreamlike state that flows through the
universe and becomes real awareness when
it connects with the brain so now the
big question is why do some scientists
think the Bennu asteroid sample might be
connected to consciousness well Hammerov
has an interesting theory he believes
that Bennu could contain special types
of molecules or organic ring-shaped
molecules that have the right structure
to support something called quantum
resonance which might be linked to how
consciousness works here's how it works
in simple terms these ring-shaped
molecules have extra electrons that
float around in a cloud these electrons
can swap tiny packets of light energy
called photons in a way that's similar
to what happens in glowing substances
like fluorescent lights now here's the
twist if you get a lot of these
molecules arranged in a very specific
crystal-like pattern Hammeroff says they
can start acting like many quantum
machines these are called quantum
oscillators and he believes they might
be able to support or even produce
consciousness under the right conditions
in the human brain it's these quantum
oscillators in our microtubules that
give us our conscious experiences since
Bennu is full of ancient organic
material there's a chance that it may
contain these special ring structures
and if that's true it opens up a wild
possibility that this tiny space rock
might carry not just the building blocks
of life but also the potential for
conscious awareness if this turns out to
be true it could completely reshape our
understanding of life's origins it means
consciousness didn't just emerge from
life it may have helped give rise to it
this discovery could bring us one step
closer to answering some of humanity's
oldest and most profound questions where
did we come from why are we conscious
and what is our true place in the
universe that's the end of this video if
