Family Farm, welcome to Spring Farmathon episode 5, I believe. I think that's right.
It is a beautiful day, beautiful morning, and just doing chores right now. Getting the sheep
turned out here. I'm gonna get them watered, then they'll be good to go. And the goal for today
is to get finished with planting. So, if everything goes well, we should be able to
get finished with planting. Hopefully nothing breaks down. We have rain coming in tonight and
tomorrow, so we want to get all of our planting finished before then. We have the river bottom,
which is the ground that we rent. It's, I forget, it's like 60 to 80 acres somewhere in there,
and then one 20 acre field over here that we have to plant. And then we have to spray the
river bottom as well. So, we are spraying the first pass pre-emergent spray on beans. We actually
got dad loaded up this morning. He's already up there with the sprayer now. Gonna get that spray
nice and early while it's calm, and then we can just focus on planting. And then we have
that 20 acre field and the river bottom to plant. We will be done planting for 2024.
Dad's still spraying, but we're doing a little bit of daily maintenance on the planter here with,
we got the grease gun down here, just going through and greasing things up good, making
sure that it's in good shape. We keep this up to date on all the maintenance and everything,
even through planting season. We got all the rest of our seed here. So, two boxes, though I think
at least one of these is empty, and then some bags.
Alrighty, dad got finished with the last little 20 acre field that we had around here.
So, now we are going to be heading up to the river bottom and get started working on that.
We're going to take this deep tinder up on the truck, as well as a pallet of seed,
and we should be good to go to work up there the rest of the day.
All right, so today we are up here planting the river bottom, and
dad's up here right now. We're about to refill, so he's just going to back up to the tinder.
How's it going, dad?
I'm in here riding with dad now. Dad, do you have anything to say?
Sure, this is our last field. We're planting beans, because look at that planter. It ain't muddy.
It ain't muddy. You're going to get the people dizzy. I'll just tell you, the planter's nice,
and it's so clean, and pretty. It's not muddy. So, this is awful early to be planting beans,
and I'm not particularly happy about doing it, but
everything's just doing so good. The conditions are so right. We got a decent enough forecast,
except it's wet. Well, we want to plant it in the dry and then let it be wet, you know.
So, we are very hesitantly, nervously getting these beans planted, and we're going to take
the planter home. It's going to be nice, and clean, and polished up. We're not mudding stuff
up, and if it freezes off, we'll do it again. If it gets muddy, I hope we're not mudding these in
the second time, but that's it. So, we're doing good. If you want me to say something,
non-farming, and have some cat time, cat talk, I can share with people, this is Passover week
right now, and today's actually my birthday. I turned 41. It's April 25th, and this would be a
maudy Thursday. Tomorrow would be good, technically good Friday, according to Passover.
Even though, you know, America celebrated Easter a month ago, we kind of keep in mind what Passover
is and Easter is. You're going to have to hold that camera still. You're going to make these
people have vertigo. I know. We have a lot of boat viewers. Of course, it's the field too.
So, anyways, I gave a Palm Sunday service, Sermon Sunday, and I can share my sermon with that real
quick. Jesus rode in on a donkey, riding to his death. That was the first time. The second time,
it'll be coming on the White Stallion. That's a good sermon right there, but if everybody thinks
about that donkey, the Bible says Jesus told his disciples to go and get this, and he called it an
ass. Go get this ass, and he said, that's what I'm going to ride into Jerusalem on. He rode to his
death on a donkey, a humble little donkey, and you think about that. That poor old donkey's forgotten
about, and there's, we think about the donkey at Christmas. There's no donkey at Christmas. That's
not in the Christmas story. We just think it's there. It's not, but there's a donkey on the
Easter story. It's what took Christ to the cross, and Christ rode a humble little donkey, and
everybody was focusing on Christ, and they should. So, I said, you ought to be like that donkey.
You ought to carry Christ where he wants to go, and let everybody look at Christ, not you. So,
the title of my sermon is, I'm an ass, you should be too, and that'll preach, because
that's our purpose. We ought to carry Christ. We ought to be the ones to take Christ where
he wants to go, and let Christ get all the attention. We don't have any attention. We're
just the donkey. So, you know, I say it very humbly, even when I say I'm an ass, you should be
too, but I had more points. That was just my sermon real quick, and that's cat time with daddy and
Lemuel. Let me give you all a little update here. So, it is now, check the time, about 4 50,
and dad has been up at the river bottom planting for a little while. We got about
80 acres up there. He's in the big 60 acre field now. He said they have about 37 acres done,
so they're getting along pretty good. We're hoping to get this crop finished tonight,
so keep you guys updated. Papa just got back with the seed tender. He and dad and Lemuel have been
up by the river bottom. They got the planter loaded up again with the seed that was in the
seed tender. We have the pallet load of bags, which those bags are all the seed we have left
for this year. We're going to go up there to the river bottom with those and be ready for whenever
dad needs them, and then right now, though, we're going to unhook the seed tender from
the truck, hook it up to the 27, and back it in the shed to get prepared for this rain.
All right, we stopped by. We got the tractor and seed tender put away in the machine shed,
so I think that should be most of our equipment put away, get the planter situated when we get
finished. Then we stopped by over here at the barn if I could do evening chores, and then we're
going to head up to the river bottom and just be up there for anything he might need and have the
we got to get the planter and the seed and the sprayer all put away before it rains.
Planter is put away. Now we need to get this pallet of seed unloaded and put in the dry.
All righty, y'all. That is a wrap on planting 2024. Hope y'all have enjoyed coming along.
Got all of our ground planted. It's gonna rain tonight. See what that does. Some years we haven't
even started planting by this point, and we're already finished, so yeah, we stayed busy. Got a
lot done in a short amount of time, and yeah, we're ready for the rain now, so we're very, very
thankful that planting went as smoothly as it did. I had no major breakdowns, just a couple minor
ones, and really didn't delay as much, so we're very thankful that things went as well as they
did. I hope y'all have enjoyed coming along through planting season. Hope you enjoyed
Spring Farmathon. Stay tuned for the next video. See you guys soon.
