One more shot. That always was the biggest lie I've ever told.
We should be ashamed of who you are. One more shot.
One more shot. That always was the biggest lie I've ever told.
My name is Christopher Valadares, and I'm an adventure photographer from Palmdale, California.
I always try to capture the power and scale of a location by shooting small, isolated subjects.
Seeing the contrast of someone standing next to Earth's most impressive landscapes
is a reminder that feeling small and insignificant can be beautiful.
A reminder I constantly need because I've felt small and insignificant my whole life.
This is my story.
I was born in an all-women's facility prison and immediately given up for adoption.
I was only five years old when my first mom passed away, and I was sent to my second family.
At nine years old, I drank alcohol for the first time.
And by 16, I became so much of a problem that I was sent to a third family.
At 17 years old, I discovered pills.
I got caught up in the wrong crowd and eventually wound up in jail.
And soon after, I found out that I lost my second mom.
By 21, I was a full-blown alcoholic.
I overdosed and even attempted to end my own life.
At 23, I went to rehab and finally got sober.
But my life didn't get any easier.
I found out my best friend had ended his own life.
And at 24, I found myself at my lowest, living out of a car, broken and about to relapse.
I needed an escape, something to fill that void.
I needed just one more shot.
And that's when photography found me.
From the moment I picked up a camera, everything changed.
I finally had an addiction that gave me the feeling I've always chased.
Growing up, I was clouded in resentment.
I knew I needed a change in perspective.
Photography really did give me another shot at life.
But it was never about the photos.
It was about how I saw the world.
When I was younger, I felt small, isolated and disconnected.
It's funny that now I seek out the places that make me feel small, isolated and disconnected.
Take it from me, someone who's been there.
The deepest valleys always lead to the highest mountains.
And the most beautiful sunrises always follow the darkest storms.
It doesn't matter who you are or what path you're on.
It's never too late to turn things around.
Because everyone deserves another shot.
One more shot, I feel free.
One more shot, I am enough.
One more shot, I'm more than a statistic.
One more shot, I don't need to fit in.
One more shot, I know what it means to love.
One more shot, I'm proud of who I've become.
One more shot, I finally feel alive.
Chris, we gotta go.
OK, OK, hold on.
One more shot.
That always was the biggest lie I ever told.
