Nikon DSLR
We do have this general control ring here
which can control things like focus, aperture, ISO
You can program it to do various different things
And of course, well, we do have to be able to zoom
As usual, the level of stabilization that we expect from the Z8 and Z9 is very high
And I don't think there'll be any problem shooting at 1 tenth of a second
at night time, and there you have it
From a build quality perspective
Well, I can tell that the exterior here is composite
That's all composites
Of course, it is a metal mount lens
This lens is weather sealed
But I don't think it'll be at the same level as the S class lenses
Having used this lens now for something like the last two weeks
I found it's pretty comparable to all of the Z lenses
The Z lenses, I think, continue to be refined
I think the glass and coatings that Nikon are putting into all of the Z lenses
is just slowly being improved
And one place where I think I can see this is in chromatic aberration
Purple fringing, for example
So I'm pretty excited what I'm seeing here in regards to chromatic aberration and flare
It's looking really good
And night time is great because the light is all
So much of this light is harsh and unforgiving
And I'm looking across all these buildings
And I have to say
I'm kind of not seeing anything in the way of chromatic aberration
Yeah
Like if we were on all of the old F mount lenses
Or almost all of them, maybe not the absolute newest ones
I just don't think you get this sort of result
So Nikon are definitely applying some new coatings
To help with flare and chromatic aberration
It's pretty impressive
All right, let's go back to the studio
I've tested this at night
Just looking straight into bright lights
And I've tested this looking into the sun
And in both cases, I couldn't really see any purple fringing
So that says to me that this is something that Nikon is considering
Trying to remove in every lens
And if that's the case
If this observation of mine is correct
I think Nikon should be commended for that
Is this lens for you?
Well, it comes down to a decision of size and weight
Versus strength, durability and reach and cost
Clearly if you are a hiker, a camper or a traveler
This sort of reach and light gathering capabilities
In such a small and light package is actually pretty useful
And I think it will be able to achieve fantastic results across the board
Obviously when you buy this lens
Well, you are getting Nikon's absolute very best optics
You are getting vibration reduction in this lens
And you are getting a little bit more reach out of this lens
But what's interesting is
I think for a lot of use cases, for a lot of people
The differences between these lenses
Are not going to be that obvious optically in your images
And it's only, as we've talked about before
It's only as you start to get to the bleeding edge of things
Where you are pushing things to the limit
You are pushing the speed of the lens
You are pushing the lens by staring straight into the sun
Or you are pushing the lens by being in extreme rain or extreme snow
That's where the more expensive lenses
Clearly are going to go that bit further
But in the case of these two lenses
For a lot of people
This lens with 20mm less on the long end
It might be a really good option
And what's super interesting is in the past
Nikon has created an F4 70-200
And as I've said before
I think the trade-off between F2.8 to F4
Versus that 20mm difference
I would totally go this way for sure
Because cameras are just getting higher and higher megapixels
I think that difference is becoming pretty negligible in 2023
Let's have a look at some images from the 70-180
OK, we are shooting on the Z8 version 1 firmware
And we are on the new Nikon Z 70-180 F2.8
Now it's winter time here in Melbourne
So the light is always low
Let's have a look at some images
We're going to adjust these together
These are the very first time I have adjusted them
I've just made a quick short list
Now as I've talked about before
I expose for the highlights
Because I know the dynamic range of the Nikon is so good
We can bring up the shadows
Here we are shooting wide open at F2.8
Shutter 1 5000 ISO 64
We're looking into the sun
Focus is here on this grass
And I think it looks great
As I've talked about before
Chromatic aberration
Here we are looking directly into the sun
I'm a bit confused but I don't see any
As this is a first look at this lens
This is not an in-depth look at its quality
But it does give you a feeling for what it will be like
In a later video I will compare it
To some of my other 70-200mm lenses
But what I can see here is
Look I think it performs really really well
I think if you were coming from F class
Anything older than the 70-200 2.8 FLED
You'd be saying this is similar or better
And honestly that lack of chromatic aberration
I'm still a little bit stunned from what I'm seeing there
Looking into the sun
Let's just as I said
We're going to edit these together
I actually quite like that the way it was
I'm not sure I'm going to change anything about it
Let's just leave that
Again the water is where the tops of water
These contrasting areas here is where you would see it
I don't see it
We are at 100%
How are these cranes resolving
That is where the focus is
I think they're resolving well
I think it looks great
Now water
This is ultra high chance to get chromatic aberration
Now I'm not sure how much is being done
In camera software or in Capture One software
It doesn't really matter
Whether it's in the lens or not in the lens
And the software is doing it
Although I've been running this software for years
And it doesn't get rid of chromatic aberration
Like what I'm saying here
Unless they've continued to tweak the algorithms
Which of course Capture One could have done that
But they do have this slider over here
Which helps to remove purple fringing
Which kind of suggests to me that
They're not doing it
Just bringing up the shadows here
The focus we can see is right in the middle here
So as we get to the back
It is starting to fall off
Again another image untouched
And I was just loving
I was just really loving what
The clouds and this tower were doing over here
There was something about those textures
And I think my focus point was here on this tower
When it should have been on that tower
But that's just the way it goes
So that's why this looks sharper
And this looks a little bit softer to my eye
Look at these results
We're in at 100%
We're reading these high tension power lines super well
For an entry level 70-182.8
That's compact and light
So far so good
Here the fence is sharp
Everything around here is sharp
And again signs of purple fringing are
And I mean I'm not even seeing green fringing
What's going on here
This is cool
Is this something the Z8 is doing
I'm not sure
More testing required in another video
But that is a great result
We're pulling up the shadows
I was exposing as best I could for the sun
Which is difficult
Because you'd actually have to just make everything else
Neuron black
But that there shows you
The dynamic range of these cameras
So hidden in that complete darkness
It's still the wall
So if you wanted to bring that up in post
This is bringing it up too far
You might want to bring it up
To something like that
But that's incredible
I do believe that there is
Great suppression happening in this lens
I'm really impressed
And it makes me think
That the application for this lens would be
Say shooting sports, hiking, wildlife
Just being out and walking around
This lens is light and it's small
So it's for people that are on the move
And I feel like
If you're designing a lens
That spends a lot of time outdoors
Then suppress chromatic aberration
Suppress purple fringing
Now let's not forget this is a pre-production lens
And Capture One certainly does not know
About the existence of this lens
There would be no profile for it
So we are seeing this lens in its natural state
As best as possible
And in this particular image
Which does make me laugh
It is the bent building
With the white picket fence
That's just too funny
In my world
I think that bird is distracting
In Capture One
We do have basic pixel level capabilities
Editing capabilities
It's pretty cool that that's built in
Almost never have to go to Photoshop
It's one in a hundred images if that
That I might have to remove something
That's more complicated
It's pretty powerful
Considering you're just doing it all in here
And then off you go
I think these balconies
These windows
All of that
Is being really nicely rendered
180mm
So here we are at full stretch
On this lens
Bring that up a bit
It's possible this lens does not have
Quite as much contrast
As some of my other Z lenses
This is something obviously
That can be addressed in post-production
125mm F2.8 ISO 1600
Hand-held on the 70-180mm
Pre-production edition
We are shooting 8K
And this is part of Rising Festival
We can see here
These domes in the distance
They look pretty cool
It's night time
It's 11 o'clock at night
This is a street light
We're at 180mm
We're hand-held
140th of a second
We can see the cobwebs
This is extraordinarily harsh
For any camera
Any lens
I think this result
Is pretty cool
Again
Buildings
Night time
Purple fringing
ISO 640
1 tenth of a second
F2.8
I do not see any
There are a lot of light sources here
100%
Pixel for pixel
1 sixth of a second
Hand-held
135mm
Just the idea of shooting
A moving train
Hand-held at night
With a long lens like this
10 or 20 years ago
You just wouldn't even
Contemplate it
Would not contemplate it
And think that
You'd be able to get a result
Got a picture of Joe here
Thanks Joe for lending me
Your 70-200 G lens
From 2003
ISO 640
1 sixth of a second
Hand-held F2.8
At 120mm
There's a portrait for you
I've just brought up
The shadows a little bit
But if you want to see the file
Untouched
The idea of getting a portrait
At night time
Under street lights
I don't know
I think it's pretty crazy
It's crazy stuff
ISO 640
1 sixth of a second
Hand-held F2.8
70mm
There's the moon
Image is untouched
Just being able to capture this stuff
I don't like that sign
So I would either remove it
Or crop it
You get the idea
And this image is sharp
1 sixth of a second
Hand-held
I think for the market
This lens is aimed at
It's performing really really well
There's a few adjustments
This image you can see here
But you can bring it back
To its base position
I prefer seeing the smoke
From the fire
I like the moody trees
In the background
That's the sort of look for me
We're at ISO 640
1 twenty-fifth of a second
F2.8
At 120mm
Hand-held
I'm not sure
There's much more
That you can ask for
Out of this image
What I'm seeing here
Out of this lens is
It suppresses
Chromatic aberration
Purple fringing
Super well
It might not have
Quite as much contrast
As some other S lenses
But I will do some
Side by side testing
In another video
Let me know in the comments
If you'd like me to do that
Further testing to come
This is just the first look
Otherwise I think it handles well
It's light
It's more affordable
Than the S class 70-200
The choice is yours
First impressions of this lens is
Yes it's a cracker
I think being able to get
These sorts of results
At night
These images are clean
I do not see a lot of
Flaring within the lens
There is good color rendition
And any more contrast
Or other aspects
That I want to adjust
Well I can
Even if we look in the corners here
For example
Up in the top right hand corner
Do we see much vignetting
I don't really see any there
And it's hard to tell on the left
But I don't see any
And on the bottom right
I don't see any
That seems to be controlled
Well too
It's hard to know these days
About vignetting
Because we do have it
In our cameras
And it can be corrected
And of course it is
Ridiculously easy to correct
In post
We can add it in
By doing that
And see I actually like it
I like what vignetting does
It kind of brings you in
And makes things more intimate
Well I'm pretty excited
By the fact that
Nikon is giving us this
Affordable range of 2.8 lenses
It's really cool
So what we have
Is the 17-28
The 28-75
And now the 70-180
And they're all 2.8 lenses
So you've got this trinity of 2.8
Affordable lenses
These are not S class lenses
But I've used all of these lenses
And they're all pretty good
This 70-180
It's great
It's working from what I see so far
And from all of these lenses
You've got an epic range of capability
Whether that's on your Z30
Your Z50
All the way through to your Z8
And your Z9
This is fantastic
Now are they for everybody
Well the build quality
No it's not the same
And as I've talked about in the past
You know this lens extends
Now plenty of lenses extend
Probably half the lenses in the world
Probably extend like this
Zoom lenses
And that's just the way it is
How else do you keep this lens
Small and light
And it's great
What you get in this package
It's really awesome
Just keep in mind
It's not S class
But that's okay
You're not paying for S class
It's almost half the price
It's really interesting stuff
And now the fact that
You've got this kind of entry level
Trinity of 2.8 zooms
Have we ever seen this before
I don't think we have
In the past
It was an F4 70-200
And from my perspective
I don't mind losing 20mm
But gaining 2.8 through the range
That's pretty awesome
But really
What's more important is
What do you think
Let me know in the comments below
What you think about this new 70-180
I can't wait to hear your thoughts
Are you gonna get yourself one
And it's been so great to see you
And if this is your first time here
I'd love to see you again
So please do
Subscribe, please share
And please like
And happy photography
