Hello and welcome to another episode of Analog Insights
In today's episode I'm taking a first look at the Lomochrome Color 92
A brand new color negative film from Lomography
It's rated at ISO 400, so ideal for the standard C41 process
And I had received a preview film roll, just one prior to the release that just recently happened
And I'm currently here in the Princeton area for work
And this is also why I'm recording it here
And I thought, okay, what can I do with this film
And I reached out to my buddy Marc Rebellier
Who's a famous musician
And some of you might know him as Loop Daddy and as a musician
And some of you also from our episode of Talking Cameras that we did together
And he of course jumped at the opportunity to give this film a try
And we therefore took it out on a beautiful sunny day on a photo walk in New York City
Shooting his Leica M6 TDL with a 50mm Summicron Type 5
And a beautiful vintage 35mm Summaron
The excellent F2.8 version
And also tried to create a little bit of variety when shooting this new film
So a couple of landscape shots on the waterfront
But also some portraits and of course all sorts of typical street shots
Speaking of the film, it's an ISO 400 film
A completely new image according to Lomography C41 standard process
And will be released first in the 35mm format
But further down the road also 120mm
And common for Lomography even the 110mm format
So really interesting
According to Lomography, it comes with accurate color representation
Regardless of whether you're shooting it in daylight or tungsten light
And interestingly in my perspective, really good dynamic range
And colder kind of bluish undertones
And Lomography describes the color as
Fascinating blue tones, clear red tones and glowing yellow tones
Combined with tender colder undertones
And the manufacturer also describes the film as
The next step in Lomography's film production journey
A completely new color negative film formula
Since the reveal of the successful Lomochrome Metropolis film in 2019
And just looking at the packaging
It immediately reminded me of typical 1990s movies
And of course given the name
This has also the intention to create that 1990s vibe
Which in my opinion perfectly fits the Lomography brand
And also catering a little bit to the
Sometimes hipster audience
But also sometimes professional audience
Wanting to revisit certain older film stock looks
And at least to me
This packaging immediately reminded me of
Japanese independent movies from the 1990s
And the typical strong saturated colors
And even in the test shot that they sent to me
And also the test shot here used for the packaging
You can immediately see these colder undertones
And really nice grain structure
So I was really interested to see how this film would perform
And yeah, can't wait to share the results with you
Oh yes
I'm currently based in the Princeton area
And therefore handed the film over to
The New York camera store Nassau Street
Who then sent it off to the fantastic Jellaton Labs
In the New Jersey area for developing and scanning
And of course there's no preset
For a brand new preview version of the film
So I provided them some direction
By sharing the original first impression scans
That I had received from Lomography
And other than that
They just had to play it by ear
And as you can imagine
With the C41 process
Developing is standardized
But it really comes down a little bit
To how you scan the film as well
Personally I was really positively surprised
By these results
I really really like the grain structure
And the texture of the film
It indeed gives it an overall 1990s look
And reminded me a lot of the
Photographs that I have from my childhood
And I really like these punchy strong colors
Really nice yellow, blue and red tones
There is indeed a little bit of a colder undertone
So a little bit similar to the
Typical Fuji portrait stocks
That traditionally were the competition
Of Kodak Portra and so on
Kodak always being on the warmer side
And Fuji stocks always a little bit
On the colder side
So to me this resembles that a little bit
With a stronger grain structure
And an immediate punchy 1990s saturation to it
What I also have to say is that
Of course we did have a lot of light
So the strong dynamic range
That was mentioned by Lomography
Had to come into play here
So the film did get a lot of light
And of course it would be interesting to see
How it performs on an overcast day
Maybe with a grayish sky
And stronger blue tones as well
Maybe in this particular case
It was more of an urban setting
Less greenish colors all around
And a lot of buildings
And a beautiful blue sky
And of course we didn't use any filters
On the lenses
So it was really what the film produces
And overall I really really liked it
I also liked it for portraits
And the skin tones that it produced
Worked really nice as well
Because you know there are certain films
That would not be recommended for shooting that
And yeah at least for us here
Really really nice
We didn't test it really in tungsten light
In artificial light as you can see
So mostly typical daylight
In the shadows or in the bright sunlight
And yeah overall
A really really nice addition
To the existing film stocks
And I'm super happy for Lomography
That they did this step
And introduced a brand new emulsion
And did such a great job in it
When it comes to the packaging
And the overarching promise
So a really nice addition
And I can't recommend enough
Taking a try with this film
And taking a closer look at it
And of course it's just a first impression video
And I can't wait to try it for myself
A little bit more
In as I said overcast situations
Tungsten light and other situations
So thank you very much for watching
I hope you enjoyed this episode of Analog Insights
And our first impressions
Of the very interesting Lomochrome Color 92 film
Mark and I had a blast
On that particular day in New York City
Of course a lot of people
Stopped us on the streets
Pronounced him a legend
And yeah I just wanted to
Take a selfie or an image with him
But we also met a lot of people
Into film photography
Somebody with a Contax G
One I think it was
Carrying that
Taking a portrait of Mark and so on
Even some people who recognized
Me from the channel
And not just him
So it was really really nice to
Yeah just enjoy the streets
Enjoy the sun
And enjoy the photography
Trying this very interesting new film
As I said a great addition
To the existing film stocks
And I can't wait to try it a little bit more
And see how it performs in other situations
