The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most famous bridges in the world.
It connects the city of San Francisco to Marin County in California.
The bridge goes over a body of water called the Golden Gate Strait,
which connects the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay.
Before the bridge was built, people had to travel across the water by boat or ferry.
This could take a long time, and the water was often rough.
People wanted a faster and safer way to get across.
But building a bridge over the Golden Gate Strait was not easy.
The water is deep, the winds are strong, and the currents are fast.
Many people thought it was impossible.
A man named Joseph Strauss believed it could be done.
He was an engineer who had built many bridges before.
In the 1920s, he began planning for the Golden Gate Bridge.
At first, his design looked very different from what we see today.
Over time, other engineers and architects helped improve the plan.
One of them was Leon Moiseef, who helped design the main cables.
Another was Irving Morrow, who gave the bridge its Art Deco style and chose its famous color.
The bridge would be a suspension bridge.
That means it would hang from two tall towers using long, strong cables.
These cables would hold up the road.
It was a smart design for a place with deep water and strong winds.
Construction began in January 1933 during the Great Depression.
This was a time when many people in the United States had lost their jobs.
The bridge project gave work to thousands of men, but it was dangerous work.
They had to dig into the ocean floor, build tall towers, and hang from high places.
To help keep workers safe, the builders used safety nets under the bridge.
These nets saved the lives of 19 men who fell.
The men who were saved became known as the Halfway to Hell Club.
Even with the nets, there were accidents.
Eleven workers died during construction.
The bridge took more than four years to build.
It opened to the public on May 27, 1937.
On the first day, only people walking were allowed.
Around 200,000 people crossed the bridge on foot.
The next day, cars and trucks were allowed to drive on it.
The Golden Gate Bridge is about 1.7 miles long, or 2.7 kilometers.
The towers rise 746 feet above the water.
When it was finished, it was the longest and tallest suspension bridge in the world.
The main cables are made of thousands of smaller steel wires wrapped together.
The total length of all the wire in the cables would stretch around the earth more than three times.
One of the most special things about the Golden Gate Bridge is its color.
It is not gold, even though it is called the Golden Gate Bridge.
The color is a bright red-orange.
The real name of the color is International Orange.
This color was chosen because it looks good with the natural surroundings,
and it helps the bridge stand out in fog.
Fog is common in San Francisco.
Many times, the bottom of the bridge is hidden by fog, while the tops of the towers rise above it.
The fog gives the bridge a magical look and makes it famous in photos and movies.
The bridge became a symbol of hope and progress.
It showed that people could do hard things with teamwork and smart ideas.
It also helped San Francisco grow.
More people and businesses came to the area because it was easier to travel.
Over the years, the Golden Gate Bridge has had to be kept in good shape.
Workers repaint it often to protect it from rust.
Engineers check the cables and towers to make sure they are safe.
In recent years, new systems have been added to protect the bridge from earthquakes,
which are common in California.
The bridge is still used by thousands of people every day.
Cars, buses, bicycles, and walkers all cross it.
There are special paths for people on foot and on bikes.
Some people visit just to take pictures or enjoy the view of the bay, the ocean, and the city.
Today, the Golden Gate Bridge is one of the most visited places in the United States.
It is also one of the most recognized bridges in the world.
It has appeared in books, TV shows, and movies.
It stands as a sign of San Francisco and a symbol of engineering success.
Building the Golden Gate Bridge was a bold idea.
Many people thought it could not be done.
But with hard work, new ideas, and brave workers, it became a real bridge
and one of the greatest ever built.
