You know how I told you that we were going to be seeing something
really quite incredibly cool? Well, we're out here in Orange County. In fact, I've been here
before. This is Tustin. That's the old blimp hangar, and this is where Chevrolet introduced
the new Corvette back in 2019. I came for the global debut of that car. Well, what's in front
of us over here isn't normal. It isn't a normal car. It isn't a normal sight. It isn't a normal
day. Take a look at this. This is Faster's Mercedes CLK GTR Roadster, one of only seven
in the entire world. He's just taken delivery of it ahead of car week. We're going to be taking
a look at this and probably later moving it on the truck as well. This isn't a normal day. Hi,
guys. I'm Shmee. Hello, and welcome back to the channel. Let's take a look at the CLK GTR Roadster.
Well then, take a look at this CLK GTR Roadster. Not only that, we're going to be talking about
the wheels in a moment. It's just been unloaded. Today, we've got quite a lot going on, but this
is the convertible version of the 90s homologation GT1 car, the CLK GTR. It's one of my favorites in
the entire world, and we're going to be taking a proper look at this. What a thing. What a day.
What a place to be out here in California, sun is shining, and that car, I mean, look at it right
now. I mean, look at this thing. What are we watching moving right now? This is one of those
holy grail unicorn cars that you don't really expect to see ever.
That's ridiculous. That's absolutely ridiculous. Look at that on the road.
These things rarely ever get driven. Is this the first time you've ever driven this thing?
We're doing test trials today for Monterey, so yes, it would be.
You've never moved it before, just around a car park or something?
No, because we got it with 180 kilometers, now it's 181.
So yeah, first time. How dare you put mileage on it.
That's what it's about though, it's to be enjoyed.
We're going to at least 10X it in our ownership, so.
Brilliant. It looks insane. It looks absolutely insane.
It works. So while he goes to spin that around, it's photo shoot time. The whole team
in the Bowdoin Raptor R. But I'm going to wait because the CLK GTR coming by,
I mean, look at that. What can we say?
This is so cool. Now I've been lucky to drive a CLK GTR before,
coupe, on track at Bahrain International Circuit, a day I will never forget.
But there's something about the Roadster, the rarity, how special it is.
And I tell you what, under some load, that sound is nuts.
I'm walking down here to come take a look at this.
See what's going on, what the plan's going to be.
Got the Raptor R, got the CLK GTR. Hey, they share an R in common.
Broden from Bowdoin Auto House, Josh.
So I've heard this is like an Uber here in Orange County. Can I get a run up the road and back?
We'll talk a little bit more about this thing. So let me step in.
Do you have a clever technique for doing this tidally?
Just slide in one foot in, sit on the side, maybe.
Doesn't make life easy. I'm going to have to give you the phone.
And then slide down.
Does it feel absolutely ridiculous?
It's definitely crazy.
So it's the weirdest setup I've ever driven.
Because it's this kind of sequential robotized gearbox.
It's new to me for sure.
Because you've got a clutch pedal, it's an automated manual.
You have a sound inside.
Inside this sounds insane.
It reminds me of the Apollo, which makes sense.
I mean, built by the same guys, right?
Yep.
Wow.
The whines of the gearbox.
Completely open.
Full Marchetta.
This is mad.
This is absolutely mad.
It's a pretty interesting car to get used to.
Because this is obviously where you've got to stop there.
And this is another like, halo, holy grail icon.
It's a wild one.
It's so unusual being sat in here though.
With the like, the way the wheels...
Yeah, everything open.
Completely. This is not made for a roof.
Nothing.
Photo time.
We've got to talk about these wheels.
Josh, you've just fitted them.
Yeah, they're one size up.
So they were 18s from the factory.
Went with 19-inch.
They're two-piece wheels from HRE.
They're called the FMR.
So the theory behind that is it's a one-piece barrel.
So it's strong like a monoblock.
But you get the kind of the three-piece look with the modular face and the hardware.
So we went with the vintage 501.
It's a classic design.
I think it's perfect for this car.
Fully polished, like that total 90s, 2000 vibe.
It does.
It screams like from this era, like mid-90s.
That's what it was all about.
Because the problem is the standard wheels, right?
You can't get tires for them anymore.
They're done.
And they're smaller.
So we actually have more clearance now.
You should have seen us trying to get in the shop to get it over a little bump.
So now we have about half inch more of height.
So wait, you're telling me this that we see now like this,
a couple of fingers off the ground.
That's lifted.
Yeah, we're good now.
So after this, after Monterey,
we're actually going to try to install a suspension lifter on it.
Okay.
To get some more clearance.
Like on a Carrera GT, that kind of thing.
But it makes a big difference.
Because when you've got a lip that long,
when the roadster front is the same as the Coupe.
No, it's slightly changed.
I think it's slightly different.
But it's so low carbon fiber.
The wheels are good.
So you can stick a new set of tires on them.
Yeah.
Week 11, 2023.
New.
That's what you need.
The car like this.
Thanks for verifying.
Yeah, it has to be.
But it's too easy to take a car like this.
It's 25 years old, 30 years old.
Just go out and drive it.
And you're driving on plastic that's 30 years old.
Rubber that's 30 years old.
It feels like plastic.
It's dangerous.
No traction.
And then brand new.
Like first experience driving this car.
You can definitely get in trouble.
And something that's of this value.
You need to look after it a little bit.
It matters.
Like I say, the wheels look good.
Good call.
I know you're not really much of a modification type of guy.
I don't change things lots.
But I think it suits the era.
It suits the period.
It's exactly what you do.
Exhaust, wheels.
That's what your shop's all about.
At idle from outside, it's actually surprisingly quiet.
But under load inside, the noises that you hear.
Obviously the intakes are right behind your head.
Literally right behind the headrests.
And even under load from outside, it sounded immense.
The sound of those gears as well.
The clunk.
Mechanical noises.
Just having too much fun right now.
This is literally the first time it's moved this much.
Under its new ownership.
Let's come and take a better look at this for a moment then.
In the boiling sunshine here.
To give it the correct name.
This is the CLK GTR Straßenversion.
Which from German translates to street version.
The homologation version of the GT1 race car.
So after the F1s dominated in 95.
In 96, Porsche introduced their 911 GT1.
And then you had the CLK GTR.
And originally they made one street car.
Before going on to build just shy of 30 of them in total.
And this is where ECR steps in.
To see and understand a little bit more about these.
So what we're looking at here then.
Is one of the six production roadsters.
There's also a prototype roadster.
Which I've seen over at the low collection.
Along with the prototype coupe as well.
This being the regular powertrain.
Has a 6.9 litre V12.
612 horsepower.
775 newton meters of torque.
And then there's a super sport.
Of which there's only one roadster.
That has the larger 7.3 litre engine.
In terms of aero and design.
Can we take a closer look back here.
Because they had to rework everything with the wing.
Given the new rear deck.
To take off the rear clam.
You undo the racing latches.
And with a couple of people.
Basically lift this.
And take it off towards the back.
Obviously the intakes.
Lots of carbon fibre.
These were insane amounts of money in the 90s.
We're talking literally a million dollars plus.
To purchase one of these when they were introduced.
And if you think about that now.
And factor in inflation.
These were more back then.
Than the current crop of hypercars are in today's money.
Obviously they've gone on to be immensely collectible.
Most of them will sit in collections.
You're not often seeing them being driven.
Considering the value.
And considering it's not particularly easy.
To find parts.
To get these running.
To keep them out there.
But the idea at the time.
If you think about it.
As a flagship halo product.
Was to make it look like the CLK of the era.
Right.
The CLK that we know from DTM car.
And the other black series models.
The familiar look at the front.
Obviously those came a little bit later.
But significantly more aggressive.
This very much wedge shape at the front.
Obviously aerodynamics.
Very much part of it.
And to be standing here.
And this close to it.
This for me was like.
When I remember starting to play computer games.
I was about 10 years old.
When this was introduced.
And it's my earliest kind of memory.
Of the most epic of epic hypercars.
And here we are with it.
Here we are with this thing.
Which represents so much.
Obviously the race cars.
Everyone knows.
Especially the incidents.
Of them going flying off during the races.
And their history at the 24 hours of Le Mans.
And everything else that they did at the time.
And you just don't really get things like this now.
Because homologation cars aren't built.
In such limited numbers.
To have roughly 25 of them.
It's something you don't see.
With the modern introduction.
Nowadays it would be 500 or something.
So the level of rarity.
Is just on a completely different stratosphere.
To anything modern.
To anything that would come out now.
And you just look at it.
It's enormous.
It's so long.
But it's also so closely matched.
To its race car sibling.
I mean come and have a quick peek.
To the interior of it.
Because effectively what they've done.
Is they've taken the fully fledged race car.
And clothed it in some fancy leather.
You've got the racing gearbox inside here.
But yet you've still got some leather seats.
Padded.
These basically built in buckets.
And headrests that are mounted to the buttresses behind you.
But everything else is super.
Just go with it.
Just keep it basic.
Keep it very very small.
It's actually I think locked at the moment.
I was going to show you some things.
But we'll have to take a look at those a little bit later on.
Anyway.
What a privilege.
To be here with Devin.
And to be able to take this in right now.
Now that we're open.
Let me show you this.
Firstly the plaque.
CLK GTR Roadster limited edition number three.
Then you pop this open.
Because once you've lifted that out.
Inside is your little storage area.
So you can take some luggage with you.
And have some spare parts.
And your CD changer amongst other things.
Tucked in there.
Then obviously this goes back in.
Not the easiest thing to do one-handed.
But it goes back into the carbon fibre like this.
And then you latch it back down.
Done.
Actually that wasn't so bad.
I guess this doesn't happen every day.
So it needs to be enjoyed while it's out.
That was the sound of a Mustang.
There's a pink 5.0 GT.
That's just lurking over there.
Kind of looks like a dark horse.
With the way it's got delivery at the front.
Basically matching mine.
But different.
Very bright pink.
More interested this way.
Right now.
The next fun challenge.
Is how do you load a CLK GT-R Roadster.
Onto a flatbed.
Before we're going to drive over to Hypersociety.
And the long story short.
Is it's not easy.
Because of how low this thing is.
Because of quite how low the splitter is.
To the ground.
And you'll see in a second how this process works.
Understand a little bit more of what needs to be done.
It will be winched on.
But to get it over the low parts.
Look at that profile.
Look at how this thing just stands out.
Most people wouldn't have a clue what this is.
But it is really cool.
Before the loading is fully underway.
Of course if you're interested in cars.
Like the CLK GT-R.
You can check them out on Exclusive Car Registry.
ECR.
Our platform that really gives you a full resource.
On all of these types of things.
And when it comes to cars like these.
The coupes and the roadsters.
Even the race cars.
There obviously aren't all that many of them in total.
And it's fascinating to be able to get into the details.
To find out where they've gone around the world.
The races they took part in.
And to learn a little bit more.
So do head over to ECR to check these out.
If you'd like to find out more.
And also to find out about the collection from FASTA.
The different cars like this.
And the Pagani Zonda Revolucion.
Amongst the others.
That make up a really epic garage of amazing cars.
So whenever I talk to anybody here.
Mr. C's towing is always the go-to.
In fact Mr. C's has actually moved my Ford GT.
About five years ago.
When I needed to get it down from.
Up in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills.
Down towards Orange County.
But obviously this is a process.
You need to be really careful over.
Because as you can see.
There's not a whole lot of space at the front.
So it's a delicate balance.
Of moving the bits of wood.
And the race ramps.
As the car comes forward.
To have the lowest possible angle of attack.
To get something like this in.
Which is a challenge to the max.
You will notice also.
The car's splitter.
Actually has those wooden chocks.
Which is a motorsport thing.
A bit of history.
That's part of the carbon fibre.
Almost that cut out.
Obviously this is very very low to the ground.
It's been measured out.
And it's been done before.
So this will get the wheel up.
And then it will be able to lift.
And make it over.
Magic process.
It just stays up.
The wheels.
This is all like.
Inch perfect.
To get this up.
Then the bit I find really clever.
Is lifting and lowering the flatbed.
To help make it even easier.
Thankfully the diffuser on this is fine.
Get the thumbs up from Cody at the back.
And yeah.
On it goes.
Zipped by magic.
It's up.
Over the woods.
Very soon we're going to be on the highway.
With that car.
On an open trailer.
Following it.
In a dark horse.
And just taking us in.
You couldn't get more California.
Up she goes.
Smoothly done.
It will need the final straps.
To go on.
And then we're going to be heading off on the road.
So I might go grab the dark horse.
And get ready for that view.
Every time we look away for a second.
Another cool car arrives.
GG with the McLaren.
It's funny.
Well there goes.
A trailer.
With a CLK GTR Roadster.
So.
We're going to follow it as well.
It's time to bail out of here.
Because it's not every day you see something like that.
Driving on the road.
So.
Let's go.
Let's go chase it.
Look at this.
Absolutely silly.
Yeah.
I hope he knows where we're going.
I think we're going this way anyways.
But that is.
Very unusual right now.
Very, very, very unusual.
I guess we're just cruising.
This is so mad.
To see that.
That is so ridiculously mad.
I don't know what else to say really.
Other than.
Enjoying the view.
Almost like tracking shots of a transporter.
Because it has some cargo worth.
I mean.
Eight figures.
Somewhere.
Bonkers.
Just a normal view.
Here in OC.
Never did I think I would get overtaken.
By a CLK GTR Roadster on the back of a truck.
But it's happened.
It has now happened.
And I put the Mustang into track mode as well.
Just because it sounds silly.
We've got a little bit of a convoy going on at the moment.
Nice.
We are back at Hyper Society.
Where some of the cars have gone.
But my Ford GT is here.
The Zonda Revo is in front.
And I think we're gonna have a little bit of a shuffle around.
To try and take some more photos.
The Koenigsegg and the Chiron Persepolis.
Because it'd be cool to get the CLK GTR next to the Zonda.
Especially considering these are two of the most epic of epic cars.
That have ever existed.
The cold start of a GT.
There is no denying that that sounds good.
So basically this needs to move out of the way around the corner.
Then there's going to be some shuffling around.
Because we've got to get the photo shoot of these unicorns together.
So Logan is kindly moving this for me.
Get it tucked around the corner.
As if by magic it has arrived.
The CLK GTR Roadster is now here with this Zonda Revolucion.
These two cars.
Two NA V12s.
In fact a lot in common.
Given the Zonda's engines actually came from Mercedes.
Obviously slightly later and certainly for this.
With the 7.3s as per the super sports of the CLK GTRs.
But two iconic poster cars.
I mean you can't really get more iconic than cars like this.
You know my let's say unlimited budget dream car.
Would be literally one of these.
F50 is very much the standout for me.
But times the value by three and you potentially land at one of these.
CLK GTR.
Yeah it is every bit as cool as you think it is.
Just the looks.
The design.
The reason for existence.
The whole story.
I love that it's derived from motorsports.
Such a big connection that they were actual race cars.
And then the same as I said earlier for the front.
The lights at the back that fit in.
That come straight from the road cars.
But obviously with that ducktail and the big wing that sits above it.
Heard that coming a mile away.
The Apollo IE rolls on through.
Jeez.
Mad sound.
Obviously the construction that's going on here at the moment.
Which will be to do with the new setup we're going to see in the future from Hypersociety.
I think it's coming around the corner.
We'll wait for the noise of the IE.
The Apollo IE enters the building.
The one of ten.
And I tell you what.
That V12 is literally the definition of intense.
If that was a rev right now my ears would not be very happy about it.
Well look what's arrived.
It's home.
The Genesis.
The prototype Huayra BC is back.
In it comes.
I gotta say also.
Wearing these wheels with the blue accents that match the painted blue livery on the car.
It fits.
It fits quite well.
So this is being lined up.
The garage is really full right now.
There are a lot of cars in here and also a lot of people in here.
But hey we're in some very good company.
So can't complain in the slightest about the lineup.
I think we are basically going to wrap up today at that point.
This is the most unbelievable lineup.
The two faster cars to go out today in the CLK GT-R Roadster.
And to be surrounded here by the Hypersociety lineup.
This is quite frankly absolutely awesome.
But you know what?
I think we should close off today there.
What an amazing thing.
A huge congratulations to Devin on this.
I mean this is true unicorn.
I mean this and the car behind.
I don't really know what else to say.
I'm exhausted as you can probably tell.
And we've got a lot ahead of us.
Plenty of events coming up.
Lots at Monterey Car Week.
That's it for this time though.
Thank you very much for watching as always guys.
I appreciate your support an awful lot.
And I'll see you again very soon.
Cheers!
