Things You Must Quit To Become Successful
1. Quit Doubting Yourself Confidence plays a big part in one's success.
It sometimes determines whether you get what you want or not.
Howell and Parker carried out an interesting study of the process through which people applied for
promotions at the company. It turned out that women only applied when they met 100% of the
criteria for the job they wanted, while men, on the other hand, applied when they met 60%
The researchers suggested that the reasons why men dominated the upper echelons of the company
is that they were willing to apply for more positions than the women were.
Sometimes, all you need is confidence to launch you to the next level.
The trick is you have to believe you can do it. It won't work if you doubt yourself,
and faking confidence just doesn't produce the same results.
2. Quit Putting Things Off Change is hard for everyone,
and so is self-improvement, and gathering up the courage to go for what you want.
The work required to get it done is also hard. When things get hard,
it's easier to push them till the next day. The only hitch is, tomorrow never comes.
Saying that you'll do it tomorrow is just an excuse, and it means one of two things.
Either you don't really want to do it, or you want results without the hard work
that comes along with it. 3. Quit Doing The Same Thing
Albert Einstein said that insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result.
Despite his popularity and insight, there are still lots of people who are convinced that someday,
1 plus 1 will equal 3. Truth is, if you keep using the same approach every time,
you'll keep getting the same results, no matter how much you hope for the opposite.
You have to change your approach if you want to get different results,
no matter how painful or difficult it is to do so.
4. Quit Thinking That Everything Is Going To Work Itself Out
It's quite tempting to think that it's all going to work out in the end,
but the fact remains that you have to make it work. This, of course, has many implications.
Don't expect your co-worker to stop dumping work on you if you're always willing to do it.
Don't think anyone is going to stop walking all over you as long as you let them, and don't
expect your boss to notice that you're ready for a promotion. Everything is not going to
work itself out on its own. You have to be proactive and take responsibility for yourself.
5. Quit Saying Yes Every yes you utter is a trade-off.
By saying yes to one thing, you're saying no to another. A good example is saying yes to working
late, which could mean saying no to the gym or having dinner with your family.
Research carried out in the University of California, San Francisco, suggested that
the harder it is for you to say no, the more likely you are to experience stress,
burnout, and even depression. Saying no is truly a hardship for many people.
No is a powerful word that you should not be afraid to wield.
Avoid phrases like, I don't think I can, or I'm not certain when the time to say no comes.
Saying no to a new commitment honors your previous commitments and gives you the chance
to fulfill them successfully. When you learn to say no, you free yourself from unnecessary
constraints and free up your time and energy for the more important things in life.
6. Quit Making Excuses You shouldn't blame
others when you don't get what you want. You should be ready to take responsibility
for your own mistakes. Justifying your poor choices and attributing your lack of success
to things beyond your control should come to an end. Successful people don't do this.
It's no secret that you're going to make mistakes, you're going to fail at some point.
And when this happens, it's crucial to look within yourself in a non-judgmental way
and figure out what you can do better next time. You shouldn't waste time trying to come
up with excuses for why you failed to achieve success.
7. Quit Focusing on the Negative There are always these negative
circumstances in life that you have no control over. There are also plenty of positive experiences.
It's possible to live with a positive perspective. If you want to cultivate success in your life,
you need to focus on all the good. You shouldn't neglect the negative,
but you don't have to pay it so much attention either. Otherwise, you're never going to be
satisfied because you concentrate so much on the unfavorable conditions of your life.
Even if you do happen to attain a certain level of success, your continued focus on the negative
will keep you from relishing in your accomplishments. 8. Quit Fearing Failure
As established before, you're going to fail, and the sooner you acknowledge this, the better.
There's no need to fear failing. You should embrace it instead. Learn from it and ultimately
improve because of it. When you are successful, you know you're always trying your best.
When you fail at something, it's not a reflection of who you are as a person. You are not a flawed
individual. Failure should be viewed as an opportunity to grow, not something to be feared.
9. Quit Looking for the Easy Way Attaining success isn't supposed to be
an improbable venture where you have to overcome a certain amount of adversity and hardship.
Successful people don't look for the easy way out. Merely strolling through life on a cruise
control is not the blueprint for success. You need to challenge yourself at times,
push yourself and stretch your limits, strive to reach maximum potential and then surpass it.
That in itself is a success. 10. Quit Beating Yourself Up
You wouldn't actually beat yourself up physically, right? So why do it mentally or emotionally?
Learning how to handle your thoughts and emotions when you're facing tough situations is important
when it comes to attaining success. Go ahead and get upset about stuff. Express your emotions in
appropriate way. Be unhappy from time to time. It happens. But don't get hung up on unpleasant
memories and beat yourself up over things that already happened. Spending so much time and energy
on this directs your attention from more important endeavors, like achieving your goals.
11. Don't Be Ungrateful The best way to establish more
satisfaction in your life is to be more grateful. If you want to push away joy, happiness and bliss,
then be ungrateful. Gratitude brings out happiness, but it also brings out success.
If you're grateful for your life and everything it encompasses, you're going to have a less
complicated time gaining wealth and achieving your goals. This isn't limited to financial
wealth alone, because wealth comes in various forms. This isn't to say that all financially
wealthy people are grateful and therefore successful, or that all financially poor
people are ungrateful and therefore unsuccessful. Being ungrateful isn't congruent with getting
ahead in life. If you crave success, then be aware of all the things you're grateful for.
Your gratitude will serve as a compass for your life. It'll guide you as you make many
decisions in your life and eventually lead to success.
12. Don't Concentrate on Your Needs Alone Focusing solely on yourself isn't going to
help you attain success. You could be the richest person in the world, and it's evident that you're
extremely wealthy. But if you amassed your wealth at the expense of others or being selfish and
egotistical, you aren't truly successful. You probably wouldn't be happy either. Sometimes,
the best way to be successful is to lend a hand to someone else.
13. Quit Getting Distracted You were going to launch your dream
business idea. But you were going to start writing that book you've been thinking about.
But you were going to travel around Europe. But things come up. It happens. Life takes you on a
different course. But don't let yourself be distracted from making your dreams a reality.
When distraction keeps you from your passions, then you're moving further and further away from
claiming your ultimate success. 14. Stop Living Aimlessly
It's up to you to ascertain your life goals and objectives. Being successful means you're
fulfilling your purpose in life daily. What is it that you want to achieve more than anything?
Whether it's super ambitious like achieving world peace or solving world hunger or more
feasible like simply being happy, it doesn't matter. The point is you're aiming to be the
best you can be. Wandering through life without any or without contributing anything to society
isn't what successful people do. 15. Don't Give Up
How do you respond when faced with an improbable obstacle? Do you call it quits or do you press on?
Successful people don't give up. They're committed to reaching their destination.
They might not get there but they don't allow obstacles to hinder them from trying.
This means pressing on despite failures and disappointments. Success varies.
What works for financial success might not necessarily work for relationships.
Being a successful athlete doesn't necessarily make you successful as a student as well.
There are varying degrees of success depending upon the situation you're in, so don't lose hope.
16. Don't Spend All Your Free Time On Social Media Or Watching Television
We've all had that moment when we're doing some research on the net,
then suddenly you see a funny cat video, then watch another and another after that,
and before you know it an hour has gone by and you don't remember how it flew by so fast.
How much time do you spend browsing the net, watching television,
or visiting various social media sites? It's fun and often necessary to log on to Facebook
and check emails but don't allow the modern technological age to prevent you from the
work that needs to be done today. There's nothing wrong with all this but it's important to ensure
you're spending your time on things that are going to propel you and your life to greatness.
17. Let Go Of The Negative People Jim Rohn once said that you're the average
of the five people you spend most of your time with. It's the people we hang around the most
that add up to who we become in life. So who do you spend your time with? This is very important
because you can't expect to soar with eagles when you're busy spending time with the chickens.
Take a good look around you and decide whether there are certain changes you need to make.
Regardless, the fundamental backbone of success is trying your best.
If you put forth your best effort without harming others in the process,
then you are successful. This could apply to work, friends, family, relationships,
hobbies, and so on. To quote John Woods, success is peace of mind which is a direct result of
self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you're capable of becoming.
There are so many ways we get in the way of achieving our full potential. We doubt ourselves,
we decide that something is just too hard, or we tell ourselves that we'll worry about it tomorrow.
If you really want to succeed, stop focusing so much on what you should be doing and instead,
take a really good look at the things you should quit doing. Well, thank you so much for watching
