#DYK that every port in the United States is part of our nation’s border?
The U.S. has 361 ports, all of which are critical to the nation’s economic growth and national security. The Marine Transportation System (MTS) – our complex system of ports and waterways – is essential to America’s economic prosperity. It drives $5.4 trillion of economic activity annually, enables strategic mobility, and links America’s consumers, producers, manufacturers, and farmers to domestic and global markets.
Our MTS is also a frontline in safeguarding our homeland. Our 25,000 miles of coastal and inland waterways are a functional extension of our borders that require constant vigilance. Every day, the Coast Guard stands that watch by controlling, securing, and defending America’s ports and waterways.
Whether we’re securing port infrastructure, facilitating supply chains, or coordinating vessel traffic, our stewardship of the MTS propels economic prosperity while strengthening border security.

Our nation's system of ports and
waterways accounts for over 5.4 trillion
dollars of the nation's annual economic
activity and supports 30.8 million
American jobs. Our ports are essential
to our competitiveness in a global
marketplace, serving as a gateway for
over 90% of all overseas trade. In
short, our security and prosperity are
inextricably linked to a safe and
efficient marine transportation system
or
MTS. We're working with international
organizations like the IMO to advance
sustainability in global shipping. And
the Coast Guard has an enduring role in
facilitating commerce through the MTS.
Here at home, our waterways connect
America's consumers, producers,
manufacturers, and farmers to domestic
and global markets. Any disruption to
that supply chain, whether man-made or
natural, affects our economy. Our broad
authorities and strong relationships
allow us to adapt quickly and get
commerce flowing again after a crisis or
natural disaster. The challenges America
faces at home and abroad are complex.
We'll continue to lead to foster
domestic and international cooperation,
build stakeholder capacity, and exert
positive influence in the maritime
domain at home and abroad. In the
Arctic, we're protecting American
communities, natural resources, and our
nation's sovereignty. IU fishing is a
threat to individuals, regional
stability, global markets, and the
environment. And we're working with
partners across the globe to fight it.
The Coast Guard continues to protect our
marine transportation system, ensuring
our waterways remain safe and secure
conduits for global
commerce. We're working to ensure a
safe, secure, and prosperous homeland,
and will remain always ready to meet the
needs of our great nation.
