City 2-1 Liverpool. January-2019. The best Premier League game I’ve ever seen? Criminal that it’s not on here
Tohono O'odham's best player to 50 goals in Premier League history.
It was hit by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
There is a man whose smile, when it ignites, lights up any day, Jürgen Klopp.
And his record against the big boys is flash indeed.
Jürgen Klopp's 90th game in charge.
He has won five of nine games against Pep Guardiola.
A few touches have an impressive head-to-head record against the great Catalan as that.
Fernandinho just beyond Aguero.
Is there enough in it?
I mean, the hands are up.
It's always dangerous territory to get in.
Aguero felt he was pulled a little, which prevented him from getting the touch.
Bit off a bit more than he could chew, but then went biting back in.
And has earned himself a yellow card. Yes, he has.
They try to remain friends, aren't they?
It's nice to see.
Dabbed up towards Firmino, onside and denied.
A shot by Klici against whom a penalty is given.
He's 12 yards away from giving Liverpool a crucial lead here.
James Milner so calm, so very, very calm.
Seven penalties this season for James Milner.
Jürgen Klopp couldn't watch.
To Broin, Aguero!
Blas, Sergio Aguero again, as always.
At times, that was compelling.
Yeah, when normally two teams want to win, that's happened.
Football is fantastic.
When some teams just want to make travels and just defend, football is complicated.
So congratulations, Liverpool.
And of course, Manchester City.
It's one of the days I am proud of the most.
Within these shores, the rivalry of our day.
Fabinho, Salah.
Oh, they've manoeuvred the ball beautifully here, Liverpool.
And Salah's off and running.
And Mane's ahead of him.
It is Sadio Mane!
Paul Steele, the lead.
A 99th Premier League goal for Sadio Mane.
Has Jürgen Klopp dancing?
Jesus.
Gabriel Jesus.
And Phil Foden!
That is a super finish.
And now the blue boys are jumping up and down.
Apparently relaxed, but surely not in reality.
Salah.
Escape can Salah.
Oh, it's brilliant from Mo Salah.
And still, Salah!
Oh, sensational!
All to dream of.
Walker stepped over it.
De Bruyne!
Another gem of a goal in a gem of a game.
And how pumped is he?
Two each.
Magic.
What a magic football match.
An embrace of mutual respect.
A contest of ferocity.
And marvellous talent.
It's a footballing rivalry that is defining this Premier League era.
It's built on respect and relentless pursuit of excellence.
But at its heart, of course, as when all great sports,
men and women collide on the biggest stage, there is a ferocious
competitiveness and desire for success.
Excellent start this by City.
Takes a deflection off the post and in!
Kevin De Bruyne for Manchester City.
The leaders lead Liverpool by a goal to nil.
We're five minutes in.
What a start for Pep Guardiola's side.
Here's Robertson, tees it up towards the back post.
Alexander-Arnold, Jota! 1-1!
The start of this game has exceeded its billing.
That's a fabulous move by Liverpool.
And they tie it up at 1-1.
We'll ball in, Jesus is there!
Jesus scores!
Without a goal in 15 Premier League appearances.
What a time to break his drought.
Van Dijk sends the ball out towards Alexander-Arnold.
The head of the ball by Cancelo.
Pass to the feet of Henderson.
He's balled by Alexander-Arnold.
An even better one by Salah. What a goal!
Sadio Mane!
That is sensational by Liverpool.
50 minutes into the second half.
A wonderful ball by Salah.
The finish was terrific by Sadio Mane.
What a game of football we have here.
Manchester City 2-0, Liverpool 2-0.
The big high five between the two managers.
A game of sublime quality and intensity.
Manchester City should be ready, all ready,
to doff their caps to a Liverpool team which has not just
sneakily stolen their title, but ripped it brutally away
in broad daylight.
De Bruyne scores.
City will not yield their title with a whip-up.
For one moment, think that there is even the smallest part of him
which is shrugging and thinking, doesn't matter.
It matters.
Jesus, Foden,
Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, 2-0 City.
They're playing some smooth, smooth stuff here.
De Bruyne, oh, that's beautiful.
Here's Foden. He scores sumptuously.
That is Manchester City at their sharp, dash-dark best.
And this is statement football from the outgoing champions,
leaving their successors behind.
It becomes possible that the champions here, the new champions,
could get a hiding.
Raheem Sterling,
who walks it in via Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
And Manchester City are ripping up their successors.
Will City win the night as overwhelmingly as Liverpool have won the year?
I said it before, they want to prove a point and they proved the point, of course, today.
It doesn't change the result of the season, but it influenced
this result today massively.
Blue and red, the same old narrative.
And what a gripping narrative it constantly is.
His pacing has kept up.
He has lost to Jurgen Klopp eight times more than to any other rival coach.
He will be aware, he will be tired of being told about City's
extraordinarily poor record on this ground.
Here's Fabinho.
What a hit!
Flash pass, Bravo!
That is a golf time!
That's a cracking ball.
What a Super Bowl from Alexander-Arnold to Robertson.
Shapes in towards Mo Salah!
To a flyer!
And Liverpool have two inside the first quarter hour.
That is a split screen.
That is a contrast.
Slumped shoulders and a pumped out chest.
What a delicious cross.
Mane!
Liverpool are pulling away.
This may be an irreversible lead on the day and through the campaign.
There's Sterling, Angelinho.
Spinato Silva!
Hold on.
He has speared City back almost to within touch.
And Jurgen Klopp is furious because he wanted to make his change.
The ball had gone out of play.
If he carries on like this, Jurgen Klopp, he might see himself in the book.
Who catches Liverpool now?
26 games each to play, but 30 years on, right here, right now,
it feels like Liverpool's to lose.
But they were good.
Wow, they were good.
And we had to defend with all we have.
And we scored.
Incredible goals.
Tap Guardiola.
Pensive.
Coiled spring ahead of kick-off.
He has never lost a home league game to Liverpool.
Jurgen Klopp's last top flight victory here at this stadium
was against Manuel Pellegrini.
That was 2015, the early weeks of Jurgen Klopp's reign.
Jota tries to leave it for Salah!
He's done it again for the 11th time.
Mo Salah scores against Manchester City.
And it's just the start.
Jurgen Klopp and the Liverpool fans would have wanted.
Here's Mares.
Takes this away from Van Dijk.
Got to undo what Grealish was.
Alvarez!
Manchester City are back to 1-1.
And the lead for Liverpool lasted only ten minutes.
As games go on.
He scored without the traps at the start of the second period.
Alvarez, since halftime, is what Manchester City can do to you.
City are now in command.
Still got deep energy in the legs.
Jack Grealish!
He's deserved that today.
A wonderful performance from Manchester City's number 10.
One of the best he's played since joining the club.
Crowning glory for Pep today.
No doubt about the outcome now.
If Manchester City do go on to win the title this season,
they will look back on today as a very important stepping stone.
Always we fought against them.
So, for the way they defend, for the way they play.
Always it's so difficult for us.
Really, really, really difficult.
But today, the players were magnificent.
You're right.
Even the result was not good in the beginning.
We played really well in all departments.
It's heads off to our players, definitely.
There's always a narrative of some sort when those two meet.
When Klopp and Pep shake hands,
a few pointed words spoken over the course of the week.
So, even in the craziest, least logical of all seasons,
it is hard to suppose that this one game doesn't have the capacity
at least to dictate the direction of the race.
Sterling.
And Foden!
And Gundogan!
And City do lead at Anfield!
A redemptive moment for Elkay Gundogan!
And the champions are behind on their own patch again.
On a ground where he has never won.
Pep Guardiola, he has a precious lead.
Big, deep breath.
Salah!
Thumps it in as if he means it!
Obliged.
And he answered the call.
Oh, again, more clearance from Alisson.
Here's Foden.
He's got between two.
And Foden set it for Gundogan!
And City have their lead back!
And once more, Liverpool's crown slips on their head.
Alisson's given it away again.
And there's Raheem Sterling.
And City now...
storm into a position which may very well be impregnable.
And Alisson, once impregnable himself, is crestfallen.
And City now on top and they will take some knocking off.
Here's Foden.
Phil Foden!
Oh-ho-ho!
Manchester City have their boots on the throats of the champions.
One mighty Blue Moon moment.
Yeah, right, in the end, when you lose 4-1, it's not our day,
but big parts of the game were a brilliant game from my side.
We played really good football.
I can see in your eyes you see differently, but...
No, I'm listening intently.
Huh?
I'm not saying differently, I'm listening intently to you.
Ah, OK.
So, yeah, and I really liked it.
We were in the first half, played really good football.
Two of the Premier League's heavyweights in collision, early season,
undoubtedly, but also a possible signpost to what may lie ahead.
Here's Aguero, round the goalkeeper, when Liverpool visit.
He has found the net all six times when he's played Liverpool at the Etihad.
Matip, and here goes Mane.
And Ederson.
And the referee blows his whistle and appeals for Kahn,
which is difficult with players from both sides racing towards him,
and there is concern for Ederson on the floor here.
It's a red card.
Liverpool are down to ten, Mane is off.
For the dismissed Mane, fourth official Craig Thorsen,
having the benefit of Jurgen Klopp's view of things,
but surely if Klopp sees the replay that we've just seen,
there can be no argument.
Yeah, I agree.
Jesus has scored.
Manchester City lead by two.
Nine goals in 14 Premier League appearances now for Gabriel Jesus.
Fernandinho is in again.
Sergio Aguero, unselfish.
Jesus is there for profit.
The best example yet, but maybe they can play together.
And if they do, woe betide the opposition.
And Sané!
Lovely goal.
Well, I think for Pep Guardiola, this is kind of much more like it, I'm afraid.
But today, Jurgen Klopp's world has just gone pop.
As you suggested, Jim,
just want to get it out of the way, get on the bus, get home, forget about it.
Go again.
Sané, with no pressure on him at all.
And that's what he can do.
It was almost an invitation to shoot.
And Liverpool will head back to Merseyside with tails firmly between legs.
Manchester City heading to the top of the table for now.
Sums up really what we've seen since Mane has been sent off.
Now, 2-0 at the break.
5-0 in the end.
One for Aguero, two for Jesus, two for Sané.
Comprehensive Manchester City victory.
Theatre.
This should be theatre.
The stage blessed today on either side by some of the most expressive performers on the planet.
Oxlade-Chamberlain.
He's had a point! We've scored a super goal!
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, a member of the last domestic team to beat Manchester City,
Arsenal, in the Cup semi-final last April.
Has given Liverpool a lead against the hitherto-invincibles.
It's a super ball.
Sané away from Gomez.
Leroy Sané has crushed it in!
Leroy Sané has now scored the last three Manchester City goals against Liverpool.
Three from Wijnaldum.
Oxlade-Chamberlain's pass.
Firmino away from Stones!
Fully done.
Gorgeous save from Roberto Firmino.
And Liverpool have their lead back on the hour.
Here goes Salah again.
Get the ball.
Here goes Mane.
Out comes Aderson.
Salah!
Liverpool have four in January with power and time to add.
Ronaldo Silva. Aguero, that's a lovely return ball.
Ronaldo Silva for two.
But City are back to within two and there are seven minutes to play.
Aguero.
And that's a good one! It's 4-3 with three minutes of time to play.
My, this place is edgy.
It's near silent.
Well, I mean, he's speechless, Jürgen Klopp.
From a position of delight not so long ago, he now looks as if he's full of angst.
Jürgen Klopp.
City lose.
That might be your headline, but there are so many more.
At the end of the most pulsating football match,
full of the most glorious goals, full of drama and trauma,
full of football on the edge, football that made your heart race.
That was some game.
Liverpool have won it.
More than that, Manchester City have lost it
and their cloak of invincibility has gone.
Yeah, nice and boring, yes?
So...
I think that's a game that proves again why everybody loves this game,
or so many people love this game,
because it's just that's how football can look,
if two teams combine quality, skills, with attitude,
and then it's possible, I think, really.
I think we deserve the three points,
but they deserve that it's not as clear as it was until five minutes before the end.
