Join me as we take a springtime walk through the world famous archaeological site of Delphi. You'll learn about the mythological and historical background of this very special place, along with its famous monuments such as the Temple of Apollo, Athenian Treasury, and the Theater of Delphi. Finally, I show you a peek into the fabulous on-site archaeological museum which houses its most famous treasures such as the Sphinx of Naxos, the Charioteer of Delphi, a gold and ivory statue of Apollo, and much more.
Hey everybody, so I am here in magical Delphi. Just look at this place, look at this view around me.
Welcome to Tiny Epics. Come along with me today as we explore Delphi,
one of the most important archaeological sites in all of Greece. I'll be sharing with you the
footage and photos I captured during my visit, along with some insights into its mythological
Located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus, Delphi was considered the center of the world by the
ancient Greeks. Today it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site that attracts around half a million visitors
each year. According to mythology, Delphi is believed to be the navel or center of the earth
after Zeus released two eagles into the air. One flew east and the other west.
After having flown around the world, the two birds met at Delphi. The point at which they met is
called Amphalos, which means navel in Greek. Delphi was home to the famous Oracle of Apollo,
where people from all over came to seek advice and spiritual guidance. Apollo's priestess was
known as Pythia. There at the temple center, she sat on a tripod over a deep crack in the earth.
Seated in this way and enveloped by vapors, the Pythia would fall into a trance state and channel
the god. I go into all this in my video about Apollo, by the way, which I will link for you
in the video's description. In his book titled The Oracle, Ancient Delphi and the Science Behind
Its Lost Secrets, William J. Broad writes, for centuries writers have struggled to convey
Delphi's grandeur, describing it as a place where primal forces have thrown open the secrets of the
earth to human inquiry. He goes on to write, evidence suggests that the words of the priestess
at Delphi repeatedly changed the course of history. No voice, civil or religious, carried further.
No authority was more sought after or more influential. None. The history of Delphi dates
back to the 8th century BC, when the Oracle of Apollo was established. Over the centuries, Delphi
became an important religious, cultural, and political center of ancient Greece. It was home
to the Pythian Games, one of the four major athletic competitions of the ancient world.
During the classical period, Delphi reached its peak of importance and became a cosmopolitan center,
attracting visitors from all over the Mediterranean world. It was also during this time that many of
the site's most famous monuments, such as the Temple of Apollo and the Theater, were built.
This is the Ancient Theater of Delphi, one of the best-preserved theaters of the ancient world.
Just imagine what it must have been like to attend a performance here.
And this is the Athenian Treasury, which was constructed by the Athenians to house valuable
offerings made by their city to the Sanctuary of Apollo, some of which you can see in the museum
that's located on site. Delphi was not only an important religious and cultural center of Greece,
but it also played a significant role in the development of philosophy, literature, and art.
Philosophers such as Plato and Socrates came here to seek divine inspiration.
After visiting Delphi, Socrates wrote,
The greatest blessings come by way of madness, indeed of madness that is heaven-sent.
Thank you so much for joining me on this short journey through time exploring the
ancient site of Delphi. I hope you've enjoyed learning about the history, the monuments, and legacy.
