This is lesson 4 of the Musicplay PreK Curriculum. I'm still piloting the curriculum, videotaping all lessons so that I know what went well and what didn't. This is a Montessori class with 24 three and four year olds - most are three. I don't have an aide - it's me and 24 children, so this is a "real" class, and sometimes things don't go as planned. Musicplay PreK part 1 curriculum is now available!

Alright, now this is Mrs. Denise. I see she's videotaping.
I'm videotaping so I can remember what I'm talking about.
And then when other teachers want to see how to do a song or how to do a game, then I'll have a video that I can show them.
Now, Mrs. Denise, Mr. Fred has gone home sick. He is not feeling well.
Now, I can stay here or I can run over and just give her a hand cleaning.
You give her a hand cleaning and if we need some help, who's a really responsible child that can go over and help?
Me!
I would say Eric.
Okay, Eric, if I need help, you can go over to the next room and ask for help.
Okay, and I will just clean the bathroom.
But you know what? I don't think we're going to need any help because you're an awesome, awesome class.
I brought in a new instrument today.
These are my egg shakers and I made them.
Sometimes they're called rattles.
They're eggs.
They're egg shakers.
Sometimes they're called rattles.
They are sometimes called rattles.
These ones I made out of eggs that you get at Easter time and I put popcorn inside them.
So I thought today when we're doing Take a Teat, Take a Teat Bumblebee, can you say your name to me?
I'll play an egg and show you how to play it.
And you know what else I brought today?
I brought this.
So when you say your name, my name is...
You get to say it to the microphone.
Okay.
Take a Teat, Take a Teat Bumblebee, can you say your name to me?
Mackenzie, Mackenzie.
That's a very good name.
Can you pat on your knees while we do this?
Okay, I'm going to jump around.
That's Mackenzie.
I'm not going to go in order today.
Take a Teat, Take a Teat Bumblebee, can you say your name to me?
Angelina.
Angelina, Angelina.
That's a very good name.
Take a Teat, Take a Teat Bumblebee, can you say your name to me?
Tracyn.
Tracyn, Tracyn.
That's a very good name.
Can you say your name to me?
Madison.
Madison, Madison.
That's a very good name.
Take a Teat, Take a Teat Bumblebee, can you say your name to me?
Lincoln.
Lincoln, Lincoln.
That's a very good name.
Take a Teat, Take a Teat Bumblebee, can you say your name to me?
Leo.
That's a very good name.
Tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle.
Can you say your name to me?
Do we do already?
Scarlet.
That's a very good name.
Don't worry about her quiet that time.
Let's do another quiet one.
Tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle.
Can you say your name to me?
Leo.
That's a very good name.
Tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle.
Raven.
We were fast and loud.
Let's just go loud this time.
Tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle, tickle.
Leo.
Oh, we did Leo already.
Leo.
Tickity, tickity, bumblebee.
Can you say your name to me?
Bella.
That's a very good name.
Quiet.
Tickity, tickity, bumblebee.
Can you say your name to me?
Brooker.
That's a very good name.
Berkeley.
That's a very good name.
Me.
That's a very good name.
And Tracen's had a turn already.
Cora.
That's a very good name.
Quinn.
That's a very good name.
Jackson.
That's a very good name.
And Scarlet has had a turn, and Madison has a turn, but you didn't have a turn.
Malcolm.
Don't use shouting voices.
That's for outside.
We're inside.
Let's use quiet ones again.
Erin.
That's a very good name.
Noah.
That's a very good name.
Did I miss anybody?
I don't think so.
Mackenzie.
I did Mackenzie first.
Do you remember Mackenzie when I did you first?
Hello.
When I hold the microphone out to you, you sing.
When I hold the microphone to me, it's my turn.
Hello.
How are you?
Thank you.
This is.
An echo.
That's a very good name.
I did an echo when I sing and then you sing.
Now, I said I brought some other eggs, and I brought some special ones.
That's why they're called Easter eggs.
These are special ones.
Now, I'm going to play two different eggs.
That's a piggy pat.
That's called the.
Oh, don't.
Hold on.
The pursuer.
If you have something to say, you put your hand up first.
Now listen to this one.
Listen to this one.
They sound the same.
Okay, listen to the purple one and listen to the orange one.
Put them behind my back.
Put your hands down.
When you think you know which one I played, you can point to my hand.
This hand for purple and this hand for orange.
Okay, not a word, just point it.
That one.
You don't know because I haven't played yet.
That one.
That was purple.
It was. It was the purple one.
I know what the orange one is.
Orange one.
Wait.
That is the orange one.
That's purple.
It was purple.
Don't call out. Just point.
It was this one, wasn't it?
Again.
Purple.
That's what it was.
They don't sound the same.
They sound different because they have different things in them.
But the noise sounds the same.
Okay, I am going to put on our song that we start with.
Do you remember the Time for Music song?
Yeah.
Yeah, because we started already, but you guys are getting really good at singing this song.
Yes.
I'm going to get to the first one.
Oh, I can see you really good.
If I can see you, then I know you can see me.
But if Liam and Malcolm snuggle back a little bit, then you'll be able to see better.
That would be helpful.
Thank you very much.
Yes.
Can I go to the bathroom?
Madison, yes, you may go.
Okay.
So, oops.
I need to go pee.
Malvin, you better go because that would not be good.
Okay, here's our song.
Can I go to the bathroom?
Oh, no, no.
Just one at a time can go because there's only room in the bathroom for one.
So, Time for Music, clap your hands.
Time for music, clap your hands.
Clap your hands.
Time for music, clap your hands.
Clap your hands.
Time for music, clap your hands.
Tap your toes with me.
Good tapping.
You're finding that beat.
Time for music.
Flap your arms.
Flap your knees.
Flap your feet.
Time for music.
Flap your arms.
Can you scuffle back?
I'll go pee.
Okay, now you may go.
Play the drum.
Time for music.
Sing out loud.
Time for music.
Sing out loud.
Sing out loud with me.
Don't forget when you're singing loud,
you still sing with your most beautiful voices.
Yes.
Are we going to do work?
We're going to sing and we're going to dance.
Okay, I brought in these eggs.
I brought one that's wrapped in tinfoil.
And I did that because
sometimes when I make potatoes,
I wrap them in tinfoil
and I put them in the oven to bake.
Have any of you had baked potatoes like that?
No.
Nobody had baked potatoes.
Okay, let's pretend everybody's got a potato in their hand
and we're going to count with those potatoes.
One potato, two potato,
three potato, four.
Five potato,
six potato, seven potato,
four.
Eight potato,
nine potato,
here comes
number ten.
Hot potato, hot potato,
do it all again.
Are you ready to try with us?
Let me try playing this time.
One potato, two potato,
three potato, four.
Five potato, six potato,
seven potato, more.
Eight potato,
nine potato,
eight potato, here comes
number ten.
Hot potato, hot potato, do it all again.
Oh, so I played faster
at the end, didn't I?
Okay, I'm going to give off the eggs
and do you remember what we do when I give out instruments?
We put them on the
You put them on the floor
and they don't touch.
Everybody has their instruments
and then it's fair because everybody gets
to play them at the same time.
Just like when you're at a restaurant
and everybody waits
until the last person has their dinner
and then, oh, don't forget,
don't pick them up yet.
I want the blue one.
Well, you know what, you're lucky because there's three blue ones coming.
Can I have the orange one?
Ready?
There you go.
Pick up those eggs.
Pick up the eggs.
Shake the eggs, quickly, quickly, quickly.
Shake the eggs, quickly, quickly.
Stop.
Oh, Madison stopped right away.
So did you, Bella.
Shake the eggs slowly.
Slowly.
Shake the eggs slowly.
Slowly.
Stop.
And with this whole side stopped.
Oops.
Shake the eggs quietly, quietly, quietly.
Shake the eggs loudly,
loudly, loudly.
Shake the eggs loudly,
loudly, loudly.
Stop.
Okay, let's sing our song.
Let's play
instruments.
Let's play instruments.
Now.
Let's play
instruments.
Let's play instruments.
Now.
Let's shake the eggs to that one.
Let's play instruments.
Now.
Let's play instruments.
Play and play and stop.
Good job!
Play and play and stop.
Play and play.
Play and play and stop.
One potato, two potato, three potato, four.
Five potato, six potato, seven potato, more.
Eight potato, nine potato, here comes number ten.
Hot potato, hot potato, do it all again.
Okay, one more time with the eggs.
Oh, oh no, let's not roll the eggs or we'll have to put them away.
Okay, don't roll them.
One potato, two potato, three potato.
Scarlett, Scarlett, can you give it to him please? Thank you.
And make it.
Okay, well maybe you should put one back so it's fair for everybody.
Okay.
One potato, two potato, three potato, four.
Five potato, six potato, seven potato, more.
Eight potato, nine potato, here comes number ten.
Hot potato, hot potato, do it all again.
Okay.
Bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum, bum.
Circle please, circle.
Um, thank you.
Can you stand up in a circle?
Okay, stand up.
Stand up and let's hold hands.
Let's hold hands.
I'll hold your hand.
No.
Please, it isn't nice to say no to someone.
When they invite you to hold hands it's nice to say yes.
Okay, bounce hands.
Riding the roller coaster at the county fair.
Riding the roller coaster up in the air.
Hold hands, wave and play.
Up in the air, waiting, waiting.
Oh, sit down.
You may not hold on hands like that, Liam.
Liam, that's dangerous.
You pull those other two boys down.
Sit down where you are.
That's dangerous when you do that.
We can't play standing up games
if you're not going to behave in a nice way.
Okay, do it this way.
Scarlett, can you find your place again?
There's a spot right there.
There's a spot right there for Scarlett.
Riding the rollercoaster
at the county fair.
Have any of you been on a rollercoaster before?
No!
Show how the rollercoaster goes.
I've been on one.
Shh!
Riding the rollercoaster
at the county fair.
Riding the rollercoaster
up in the air.
Liam, back to your spot.
Waving up so high
and going down so low.
Riding the rollercoaster
it's fun, you know.
But if somebody's going to pull hard on the other hands
we cannot do it.
So Liam, can you do this the nice way?
Are you sure? Okay, stand up.
Everybody has to be really, really nice
before we sit back down.
Stay here.
Riding the rollercoaster
at the county fair.
Riding the rollercoaster
up in the air.
Waving at the top
and going down so low.
Riding the rollercoaster
it's fun, you know.
Up, up, up, so high.
Going down so low.
Up, up, up, so high.
Going down so low.
And now we can sit down.
Now we can sit down.
I brought these.
It's a bell set.
But I can take the bells out of here.
So I'm going to take two bells out.
And I'm going to play a song.
I need a helper.
Angelina, would you stand up and hold this bell?
Can you stand up and hold that bell?
Angelina is going to be my high note.
Lincoln is going to be my low note.
Can you sit down on here?
Sit down and you hold this note.
So Angelina, come on over here.
You hold this note way up high.
So we have a high note and a low note.
And I'm going to play a song
that you might remember.
I'll start again.
One, two,
hide my shoe.
Three, four,
jump out the door.
Six, pick up sticks.
Seven, eight,
lay down straight.
Nine, ten,
a beat.
I'm supposed to play the high note
and I'm supposed to play the low note.
Do you think you know?
Can you point to Angelina or to Lincoln
and show me which note to play?
That's why Leah needs to stay sitting.
Can you go back to your places in the circle?
Sorry to let you go back.
Okay, let's finish. Five, six, pick up sticks.
Ready? Point to Angelina first.
Five,
pick up sticks.
Six, pick up sticks.
Can you sit right there, please?
Okay, we're going to put bells away
and you can sit down. Thank you for helping.
Can you show me with your hands
high and low sounds?
Can you sit down, Lincoln?
Scarlett, can you sit in your place?
Thank you.
One, two,
tell my
shoes
three, four,
shut the
door.
Oh, my goodness.
Can you sit down, Lincoln?
Then everybody can see better.
You're right.
Okay, let's sit down, but we'll do it with our arms.
Scarlett, you need to stay in your place, please.
Scarlett, you're going to need to stay in your place
because when you sit in front of
Madison, Madison can't see.
Well, we've got other things
to do today, but I wanted to practice
high and low notes.
Scarlett, you're not helping here.
What have we got next?
We've got open, shut.
Do you remember this song from last week?
Yeah.
Open, shut.
Give a little clap, clap, clap.
This is easy.
Open, shut.
Give a little clap.
Up, down, up.
Down, down, down.
Up, down.
You need to sit on your bottom
or you need to sit on a chair.
On your bottom, in your place, or on a chair.
Scarlett, you need to sit in your place or on a chair.
Okay, then you sit on a chair.
Okay, you can stay in your place, but you need to be in one or the other.
Thank you.
Big and small, big and small.
Big, big, big, big, small, small, small.
Big and small, big and small.
Big, big, big, big, small, small, small.
It's okay.
Hot and cold, hot and cold.
Hot, hot, hot, hot, cold, cold.
Hot and cold, hot and cold.
Hot, hot, hot, hot, cold, cold, cold.
Loud and wide, loud and wide, loud, loud.
Louder, louder, louder, louder.
That was pretty good.
Can we stand up and let's try the up and down part with our arms.
Up and down, down, up.
I was in Sedona last week, and it was beautiful there.
And we walked through the forest, and there was leaves falling from the trees.
Have any of you seen leaves falling from the trees?
No.
So, I brought some scars, and I'm going to show you what I'd like us to do with the scars.
Leaves are falling down, all around the town.
Whirling, whirling in the wind, the leaves are falling down.
And then there's a part where we get to toss the leaves up in the air and catch them.
So, I'm going to give a scarf to everybody, and we're going to do the leaves up.
I'll do the black one.
You get what you get, and you don't get upset.
You know what, we can't be fussy with the color of the scarf, because it will take too long to give out the scars.
If you're joining us, you have to be appropriate.
Angelina, one for you.
Theo, one for you.
And Cora wants pink.
I don't know if I've got pink, maybe I do.
Cora wants pink.
And Tracyn wants yellow.
Here you go, Tracyn, yellow for you.
And would you like a pink?
You don't take hers away, I have another one in here.
And would you like a blue?
Yes.
That's okay, we're going to all spread out so we've got lots of room.
Okay, find a space, you don't have to swish up, find a space.
What color would you like?
I want blue.
Okay, blue it is.
I got blue.
Alright, I'm going to put the music on and we're going to try with those leaves.
Oh, I'm going to do that.
Find yourself some space, find a spot where nobody's standing.
Leaves are falling down, all around the town.
Burning, burning in the wind, the leaves are falling down.
Toss them up. Toss, catch them.
Toss, catch them.
Leaves are falling down, all around the town.
Burning, burning in the wind, the leaves are falling down.
That's the tossing part.
Toss them up.
Leaves are falling down, all around the town.
Burning, burning in the wind, the leaves are falling down.
I want you to make a pile of leaves right here.
Put all your scarves in a pile and stand back up so we've got lots of room.
Find your own space.
Are you making a pile in the middle?
Oh no, we're making a pile in the middle.
And do you know what we're going to pretend to do?
We're going to pretend that we're working in the yard.
So find a space, everybody put a bubble around you.
Put a bubble around you so you're not right next to somebody else.
Okay, have you helped your mom or your dad rake leaves up in the yard?
No.
No, we're not going to jump on those.
Okay, so we're going to pretend to rake the leaves up.
Rake the leaves up, rake the leaves for work.
No chore we're not doing.
