it hadn't been seen by anyone yet only
those on site who recorded it of anyone
who should see it it should have been
two women in particular it was a
heart-wrenching mystery that was finally
uncovered the mystery had been around
for decades then lost 52 project got
their hands on the case Tim Taylor and
his wife Christine Dennison's private
company had one very clear goal that
would take them from foreign libraries
to the freezing depths of the ocean
floor the name project 52 was because 52
submarines had disappeared
WWII they looked to recover them they
had a lot of resources at their disposal
and even got the go- ahead from the
government but they had other important
duties too a duty to give closure to the
many families of the people on the subs
when they
disappeared now that they had the green
light to look for the USS Grayback they
put everything on the case 80 people
disappeared along with it and it had
been so long that they weren't coming
back but the truth would just be good
enough but this was a special case the
project wasn't a normal one no one even
knew where the submarine had been for
3/4 of a decade it was weirdly not where
it should have been Tim looked over the
notes he had found for the third time he
had to make sure that he had read it
properly the submarine left Pearl Harbor
in late January 1944 and after a month
reported that it had successfully sunken
two Japanese ships but they had a
problem on their
hands after engaging with two Targets
the submarine was running low on
ordinance
the submarine planned on docking at
Midway aall but after 3 weeks it was
clear it wasn't going to arrive then Tim
found a clue in the
notes in the document it read that an
enemy plane had found a submarine that
matched their description and sunk them
was the translation really right he
couldn't believe it he was like a
detective finding new
Clues he had to make sure so he called
the Japanese officials that could help
him he worked with a translator and the
original documents to make sure but then
they discovered something quite
concerning together the documents he had
before were just translations from the
originals but it seemed that when the
document was translated there may have
been a single digit that was wrong and
it would cause a massive error and
explain the mystery what made it worse
was that the new location was 100 Mil
away not only that if they wanted to
cover all their bases they would have to
search an area of over 10 square
nautical miles in only 24 hours Tim and
his wife rushed to get their team and
Equipment together with a mix of
excitement and worry at least their main
piece of advanced Tech was ready to go
and water baby a 14t long autonomous
underwater vehicle the thlb submersible
drone was soon bobbing on the surface of
the ocean Tim held his breath every time
the water drone resurface to transmit
data to their computers on the main ship
every 3D image he stitched together was
like a maddening tease being so close to
the truth but still not showing any sign
of the Grayback suddenly the Drone
pinged that something had happened
happened the Drone had signaled there
was a
malfunction the entire team sunk in
defeat it was the worst possible moment
since they were nearly at the end of
their time frame all Tim could do was
stitch together that last batch of
images with a long sad face but he
quickly noticed something odd it wasn't
the normal array they had seen before
well there was a distinct set of lines
enough to give him hope Tim ran to the
door and called for his wife his heart
raced had they finally found it the
entire team looked at each other with
wide eyes there was the gray back they
all cheered and slapped each other on
the back it had been decades but another
sub had finally been found and oh boy
was this big lady
impressive had even with the damage
inside a clear message they had run into
trouble Tim could see just how amazing
the sub was she had been built by Groen
Connecticut's Electric Boat Company the
one that built the US Navy's first sub
ever this girl had some serious
Firepower back in her day her maximum
surface speed was 20 knots and at lower
speed she could stay underwater for up
to 48
hours between that the water
displacement of
2,410 tons and a range of just over
12,500 Mi she was not an easy ship to
take down suddenly a hush fell over the
Salvage team it was a somber sobering
realization they hadn't just found a
hunk of metal 1,400 ft below the waves
but they had found the last resting
place of 80 men even if there were no
remain left they were floating above a
graveyard it was a harsh reminder that
the next most important part was also
going to be the hardest there would be
no public broadcast or announcement not
until they showed two vital people who
had been waiting a lifetime to know the
truth die Days Later Tim and his wife
sat at the table with two older women
Gloria hery and Cathy Taylor who had
both lost an uncle in the disaster the
two women though grateful for the chance
to meet couldn't help but feel a bit
confused they wondered why timid invited
them and what the purpose of this
Gathering was Tim sensing their
hesitation broke the silence we haven't
broadcast this yet he said softly his
voice filled with a quiet reverence we
wanted you to be the first ones to know
that this is the
Grayback a beat of Silence hung in the
air before Tim reached forward and
pressed play on the projector the room
darkened as the screen flickered to life
and the women's eyes widened the initial
shock registered on their faces but as
the images continued to unfold their
emotions shifted glor eyes slowly
widened her face a mixture of disbelief
and wonder Kathy unable to contain her
reaction clapped her hand over her mouth
a soft gasp escaping her lips the raw
emotion was palpable as the tears began
to flow fast and uncontrollable oh my
God she whispered her voice trembling
her hand pressed harder over her mouth
as she watched the video unable to look
away the scene before them was a somber
one and within moments both women were
sobbing openly but it felt as though the
weight of the years of waiting un
certainty and loss had all come crashing
down at once Tim kept his gaze fixed on
the women his voice soft but firm this
is where your uncles are he said barely
above a whisper the footage continued to
roll slowly panning over the length of
the graybacks hull but once a pristine
symbol of military strength the ship now
lay in Ruins decaying with time the
Sleek shining metal was now marked by
years of corrosion the once glimmering
surface now a modeled combination of
greens and blacks the impact site where
the torpedo had struck the ship appeared
on the screen the damage was as horrific
as it had been described in reports but
now with this footage it felt all the
more real Gloria's breath caught in her
throat as the camera focused on The
Battered remains she reached for Cathy's
hand her fingers trembling as the full
weight of the moment hit her Cathy's
grip tightened as the two women
exchanged a glance one filled with
sorrow and grief they shared a silent
understanding their Mutual loss
connecting them in a way words could not
describe Tim and his wife sat quietly
the silence in the room thick with
emotion it was clear that this moment
had stirred something deep within the
women the video played on but neither of
them seemed to notice anymore instead
they held each other tightly the tears
coming in waves unrelenting and fierce
the pain of years spent wondering of not
knowing what had happened had been
replaced with a Bittersweet confirmation
their uncles the men they had loved and
lost were finally coming back to them
eventually Kathy ever the strong one
took a deep breath and reached for a
tissue her hands hands were shaky but
she managed to wipe her eyes composing
herself she turned toward Tim her voice
thick with emotion but steady
nonetheless he's come back she said her
eyes meeting Tims thank you thank you
very much timk throat tightened as he
struggled to hold back his own tears the
words simple yet profound pierced to the
grief in the room like a quiet Beacon of
closure while the long painful search
for answers had ended and in its place
the women found something unexpected a
sense of Peace the group sat together in
a com able silence each person
processing the moment in their own way
as the video continued the room filled
with quiet conversations the women
shared stories of their uncles how they
had grown up their quirks their laugh
the things they had loved Loria spoke of
how her uncle had always been the life
of the party the one who could make
anyone laugh while Cathy smiled through
her tears as she recalled the letters he
had sent from aboard the Grayback full
of optimism and
excitement Tim and his wife now in their
own way part of this extended family
shared the painstaking joury Journey
they had taken to find the gryback they
spoke of the breadcrumbs they had
uncovered the tiny fragments of
information that had slowly LED them to
this moment it had been a long grueling
process full of dead ends and false
hopes but in the end it had been worth
it and finally there was a moment of
quiet understanding among all of them
the answers they had been searching for
it finally arrived and while it would
never undo the years of hard action loss
it brought a sense of closure it was the
beginning of the end of a long chapter
and for Gloria and Cathy was a reminder
that though their uncles were gone their
memory would always live on immortalized
in the footage that now told the story
of the greyback
