My name is Miss Natalie and this is Primary Focus. Today we'll learn about marsupials.
Marsupials? No, marsupials. Marsupials are a type of mammal. You may already know some types of
marsupials like kangaroos, koalas, opossums, and Tasmanian devils. Most marsupial species
live in Australia and South America. There is only one species of marsupial in North America.
The Virginia opossum. Marsupials are not native to Africa, Asia, or Europe. Marsupials are very
unique. This is because they have a pouch that protects their young or babies right after they
are born. The pouch is called a marsupium. The baby is called a joey. Marsupials are only pregnant
for a short time so their young need a safe place to finish developing. The joey will stay protected
in the pouch for weeks or even months until it is fully developed. Once it is old enough it will
climb out of the pouch and stay on the mother's back. Australia is home to the most types of
marsupials. The most famous of all are kangaroos. Kangaroos live in a group called a mob. They can
hop up to 45 miles per hour or 72 kilometers per hour. The females are faster than the males.
Koalas are another marsupial that live in Australia. People think they are slow because
they sleep up to 20 hours a day but they can actually run and climb trees up to 20 miles per
hour or 32 kilometers per hour if they need to. Opossums are found in North and South America.
These marsupials will have up to 20 joeys in a litter. Once they are fully developed and ready
to leave their pouch the mom will carry the babies on her back. Opossums have a clever trick
to fool predators. If they are in danger and cannot get away they will pretend to be dead.
This is called playing possum. Now you know all about marsupials. Here's a marsupial joke.
Why didn't the bunny get a job as a marsupial? Because he wasn't koala-fied. Subscribe to my
