Good morning Professor Charlie. I would love to share some polar bear facts with you.
But first let me stretch out on this nice cold ice. That feels so good on my back.
And then let me clean my paws, which can grow as wide as 12 inches to help support my weight
on the ice. We polar bears live in the Arctic Circle, not the Antarctic. That's where penguins
live. Five nations, Canada, Greenland, Norway, Russia, and the United States is where we roam.
Most polar bears, including myself, live in the Canadian Arctic and Subarctic,
where we share this land with the indigenous tribe, the Inuit, who call polar bears,
Nanook. Our biggest threat to our existence is climate change. This is because we polar bears
depend on the sea ice for our survival. So please try and remember simple tasks like turning off
your lights, recycling, and just living responsibly. It could make a huge difference
to our species. This is a fun fact. A polar bear's white fur allows us to camouflage
into our environment, but it actually isn't white. It's translucent and only appears white
because it reflects visible light. But beneath all our fur, our skin is actually jet black.
Polar bear moms usually have between one and three cubs. The cubs are completely dependent
on mom, who will teach them how to hunt and allow them to nurse for up to the first 30 months.
As I gaze out over the sunset of Hudson Bay, waiting for the ice to freeze,
I wanted to thank non-profit organizations like Polar Bears International,
whose team of conservationists, scientists, and volunteers selflessly dedicate their life to secure
a future for polar bears across the Arctic. I invite you to join their journey because together
we can make sure polar bears roam the sea ice for generations to come.
Tonight, from the comfort of your live cams and from us polar bears, the comfort of the Arctic,
we can look up at the skies and gaze at the northern lights together.
The Arctic is a magical place. Never stop learning.
