Hi everyone, welcome back to Roses in Houston Garden.
In this video, I would like to share with you
my top four favorite climbing roses
that do well in hot and humid climate like Houston, Texas.
This part where I am at is about 30 to 35 minutes
away from the Gulf Coast.
The island is the Galveston Island,
so we are about 35 minutes away from that.
It is rather humid.
And these roses have been in my garden
for at least three years.
So I think it's fair enough to evaluate them
and let you see how they look.
Okay, and of course they will,
as far as the blooming capability,
bloom size and shape will be different in the summertime,
but now it is spring, it is still springtime.
The first one is Florentina.
I have been posting in a short section.
This rose has been blooming its heads off.
And this one, I think it's between three to four years.
This is a red rose.
And initially in the beginning of my rose growing journey,
I was not into red color at all.
Like I only bought pink blush applicate,
those kind of light colors.
But then as I bought too many of those,
it start to all look the same.
And I thought, okay, let's add some red.
And I bought Bordeaux, which is the shrub rose.
And then I thought, okay,
how about just get some climbing red rose?
And here we are.
So this one is slow to start.
And let me clarify what I meant by
slow to start blooming specifically.
But in the first few years,
it will grow the cane so long without blooming that much
as it focus its energy on growing the roots and the cane.
So in the first few years,
you may not see a whole lot of blooms,
maybe a little bit here and there,
but certainly it is going to flourish for you.
Look at this bloom, so beautiful.
And these blooms have been open for,
I mean, a few days already.
The flowers on Florentina hold up better
than some other climbing roses.
The petals are on the thick side as well.
So they hold on quite well
without shattering within a day or two,
unlike some other roses.
And this is something that you can enjoy
for a good period of time to leave on the bush
or bring inside to enjoy.
And like I mentioned,
the first few years is going to grow the canes
and everything.
I highly recommend putting this one in the ground
or in the raised bed
This one, I have it in a pot,
but I cut the bottom so that it will allow the roots
to expand more because this is such a huge rose.
I think it does much better
when it can expand the roots
and reach the full potential
rather than staying in pot
and then have the root bound
or not being able to expand.
But of course you do what works for you.
If you don't have the space or the ground space,
you can try in the pot
and then it may do well for you as well.
So this is Florentina.
It has really good growth,
beautiful foliage.
And in the first few years,
of course, with just like many roses,
the disease and pest resistance
not that great in the beginning.
Just think of it like a baby and kids
that don't have good immune system yet,
but as the time goes,
it will become more resistant.
And same as Florentina,
and this is German bread rose by Cordes.
And inspired by Florentina,
I have this tote that I designed
and it is available on the website
at rosesinhouston.com.
It has a combination of red
and then blush colors on here.
And it say,
one can never have too many roses.
So this bag is inspired
by this gorgeous Florentina
and it comes with the red handles as well.
This is 16, no, it's 15 by 15.
I don't even remember.
And the other side,
it has a combination of pink
and apricot and some blush color.
So you get two designs on one tote
and you can just flip and use on the days
that if you feel like red,
you can flip the other side if you want pink
and apricot and blush,
you can use this side.
And this one say,
my flowers keep growing,
my heart is blooming.
And as I walk into this section,
I initially told you I would share four,
but consider this as a bonus
because I couldn't count.
So basically there will be five climbing roses
in this video.
So the next one is sombre climbing rose.
If you are into white rose,
white climbing rose,
this is a great one.
This is an antique rose.
And of course,
it depends on your preference
when it comes to the bloom shape,
form and things in that nature
that most of us rose lovers,
we have preference.
Some people like cup bloom,
some people don't prefer flat.
This one though,
I post a few videos of sombre on the channel
in the short section.
This one, when it first open,
it's more,
it's not flat like this.
So this is when it fully opens,
it opens pretty flat.
And I know some people are not into that
and that's okay.
But for those of you who like a good,
a good blooming machine,
this is a good white climbing rose.
It's not quite true white.
It has some like light yellow.
And during the cooler weather,
the middle of it,
sometimes it even has like blush color,
which is absolutely gorgeous.
But as the weather gets warmer,
it becomes more like white
and light yellow in the middle.
This one is a good rose to have
and it smells like hard to tell.
I think it has a hint of honey as well.
So it can grow pretty big,
but I keep it to where it's not massive
because in this area that I have,
the location of it,
but it's doing fine here for now.
This one kind of looks similar to bolero rose
as well,
kind of at the different bloom stage,
kind of looks very similar to bolero.
I cannot speak bolero.
So that's the white version of the climbing rose
if you want to add the white one.
The third one is Spirit of Freedom.
This one is by David Austin,
but it is no longer available on David Austin website,
but perhaps they'll bring it back like Evelyn
due to its popularity.
This one I have had it since 2021,
spring of 2021.
And it has been an amazing bloomer in my garden.
It just finished the first flush.
It still has some blooms here and there.
This rose grows really big,
so you need space for it.
Look at all the lateral canes coming up.
New growths everywhere.
And in my north spring.
Introducing the Digital Rose Journey Planner.
This is the digital planner that I designed
for rose lovers to keep track of your current rose list,
your which list,
your rose plants,
or anything that has to do with rose gardening.
This is so easy to use on your phone.
You can add text,
you can add photos,
you can edit,
delete,
everything so easily accessible
that will allow you to make your rose gardening notes
and everything much easier.
Find a link in the description
or go to rosesinhouston.com.
In my north spring garden,
it can black spot quite heavily,
but that doesn't stop it from blooming at all,
at all.
Last year,
I post another video that shows you
different time of the year
and how black spots just
does not stop this rose from blooming.
So if you have a north spring garden,
this one will do fine
as long as you are okay with it having black spots
and it doesn't bother me as long as it blooms.
And then these foliages will fall.
And I think the reason that it has black spots right now
because I didn't defoliate in the springtime when I prune.
I didn't do a lot of pruning
on my climbing roses this year.
So these are more likely the foliages,
old foliages from the previous season.
So that's spirit of freedom.
The fourth one on the list is raspberry cream twirl.
This one I have had it since 2020
towards the end of the year.
This rose has been a great blooming machine as well.
This one has a combination of pink and red stripes.
Like if you like stripey rose,
then this is the one.
And this is the first stripey rose
that I have in my garden.
I think last year it bloomed,
like the bloom maybe more last year than this spring,
but this is still fairly good.
It just finished the first flush kind of
because there are still some here and there.
This one can black spot to a certain degree.
And if you don't spray, of course,
but if you do, then it can be different.
But overall it is a very good blooming rose
that is healthy overall for the most part.
It is fairly healthy, does not have a lot of issues.
And these blooms have been open for a few days already
so that I don't have any just open bloom with this one.
Maybe this one just open up,
but the rest of them are a few days old.
So it is a gorgeous one.
And the plus on this rose is it barely has thorns.
It has some here and there,
but compared to Florentina and other roses,
this one is fairly smooth.
The cane, so you're not going to get poke like crazy
like a Florentina.
That one is super thorny.
So I like this one and this one I put in the ground
and it branches out nicely.
And I just finished pruning not too long ago
because it bloom earlier this year
due to our warm and cold, warm and cold.
So that kind of got it to start blooming super early
and I didn't get a chance to prune
until finish the first flush.
Now the fifth one that I absolutely love,
this is another David Austin climbing rose.
And luckily this one is still available on their website.
It's not a retired version or anything.
This is Bathsheba.
I have had this one, I think at least three years now
or maybe four, somewhere around that time.
This rose, I have it in a pot
because I didn't have any other room for it.
And the colors during cooler weather,
now this is a warmer day.
So it turns out to be like creamy yellow.
It has that honey, almost like honey note to the fragrance
which is really nice.
And the bloom on the cooler day,
it has the pink, like a hint of pink apricot color as well.
It is a great blooming rose
and this is the one that you don't have to wait as long
as Florentina for your climbing roses
to start producing and blooming.
This one will start giving out some bloom
in the first and second year
and it gets better as it gets older.
It is a fairly prolific rose to have.
At first I was wanting the other one,
Princess Crown, Princess Margarita,
but that one is a fairly big climbing rose.
And I thought, okay, that may not work
for the space that I have.
So let's try something that's smaller.
So I got Bathsheba, which works out nicely.
If there's room, I would like to try
Crown Princess Margarita as well,
because that one, I heard that it does really well
in hot and humid climate.
But for now, Bathsheba is doing amazing
and I love this rose due to its
ever-changing colors in different climate.
And it is quite a blooming machine.
Smell really good.
It is a beautiful rose.
I do have a few other climbing roses in my garden,
but most of them are still fairly young,
like Quicksilver, St. Swithun, what else?
William Morris, Polka, and some others.
So I would like to do a separate video
on those at a later time.
But these are definitely my top five
that do well in my garden.
And of course, for other roses,
I do not have all varieties
and they may do excellent in other yard.
I just don't have them.
But if you are looking for these climbing roses
and thinking about adding them to your garden,
depending on the climate and where you are,
for me, they do really well.
I hope you enjoyed this video
and I'll see you in the next one.
Bye-bye.
