6.35 we're heading out on an excursion already. We are in St. Andrews Bay in
South Georgia Island and we are going to check out some penguins. The weather
hasn't been too favorable around South Georgia so in the morning it's a little
bit better and right now we're going to be heading to a penguin colony the
biggest on the island so I am so excited because I missed it the other day and I
can't wait to go out there and experience it with you guys. We're just
going to put on the rest of our clothes and wait for our signal to get down
there. They said that the swells are a little big. We'll just listen to the
guides and make sure to pay attention to what they're saying. You did it! Let's go!
I was the first one ready for seal group today.
Look at that! That makes it really scary.
Wow! Exciting!
This amazing place is home to the biggest colony of king penguins in South
Georgia. Of course with a bunch of penguins there's also penguin predators
which today is some leopard seals. We saw a penguin maimed by a leopard seal and
if you don't want to see that look away for the next five seconds. Okay let's get
supposed to get that close to them but if they come close to us we can just
stand and wait for them to come closer. They're so curious of us. So today we get
to hike through a penguin colony and a bunch of seals too. River crossing.
Are you ready? They're slippery. These guys are molting. It's kind of like having a
horrible sunburn and having your skin peeling off. The penguins are super cute
but you can't forget that these bad boys are birds. Bird things. Lots of feathers
lots of poop. The biosecurity is gonna be intense today. Oh my gosh. Wow as soon
as I came around this corner there's just so many more. I really don't want to
fall here. So many little micro interactions. Very hard to pay attention
second biggest and we're missing right now the emperor penguins still. That's
the ones we haven't seen as well as the deli penguins. Yes deli and we haven't
seen chinstrap this trip. Yeah. What have we seen? Rockhopper. Macaroni. Macaroni gen 2.
We've seen king a lot. Magellan. And Magellan. Yeah so five out of the eight
is what we've seen on the trip. Wow. Emperor. Adelian. Chinstrap. Which are more south.
Yeah so once now that we're going to have one more excursion today and then
we're going to be heading south hopefully to see some whales and more
penguins. But I just am overwhelmed with the amount of penguins here and just I
was thinking that the smell would get to me but honestly it hasn't been too bad. I
think it's like you just got to deal with it to be surrounded by this kind of
beauty. I've just been looking at a picture that you see some like on
National Geographic like in the magazine I just been looking at that all day
today and it's like wow yeah it's pretty powerful. It's pretty impressive that
it's so green here too you know compared to what we get to Antarctica. It's gonna be just completely white
complete rock that's all you see but we're also gonna stop by South Orkney
Island on the way there. Well they're kicking us out we were the last to leave
today.
After every excursion I make sure to rinse off the GoPro and the stick to
keep the salt off from destroying it. I get the clips and pictures off of all of
the cameras and try to charge everything before the next outing. We're sailing to
a macaroni penguin colony before heading back out to sea for the Antarctic
to the rockhoppers we've seen before but they have some slight differences. These
guys are widely distributed from Australia, South Africa, to Antarctica and
island in Antarctica called South Orkney Island. So make sure to subscribe and
ring the bell to come along with us. Let us know what you think of these enormous
colonies. We'll see you guys soon!
