One of the most spectacular places to visit in Croatia is Plitvice Lakes National Park,
and it's definitely possible to get a lot out of the park in just one day.
If you're planning a day trip from either Split or Zagreb,
here's what you need to know in order to make the most out of it.
Starting from Split, you've got three options, a tour, car, or bus.
Tours are the easiest option if you're short on time.
They usually include hotel pickup and a guide,
and some even offer a one-way transfer to Zagreb, which is great if you're moving on.
Just note that entrance tickets aren't always included,
and it can get crowded with other tour groups.
If you do want to take a tour, we've got some suggestions linked in the description below.
The bus is the most budget-friendly choice.
It takes around three hours, and there are several departures daily.
For fewer crowds, consider taking the bus the night before
and stay near the park and be ready to go when it opens.
Driving gives you the absolute most flexibility.
The trip takes around three hours,
and staying overnight nearby means that you can beat the rush in the morning.
If you're coming from Zagreb, the same options apply.
Many tours from Zagreb also include some stops in a scenic village.
You can even take a tour that ends in Split if you're heading south.
Buses from Zagreb take about two and a half hours,
and if you're driving, it's just over two hours to the park.
An early morning start lets you beat most of the crowds.
And a few quick tips to make your day even better.
First, timing.
Summer is the busiest season and the most expensive to visit the park.
If you can, visit during the shoulder season, spring or autumn,
when the crowds are smaller and the tickets are cheaper.
Winter is even quieter, but some areas of the park may be closed.
You'll need to book your park tickets in advance online.
Choose Entrance 1 if you're arriving early,
or Entrance 2 if you're arriving with the midday tours.
For your route, we recommend Route C from Entrance 1 or Route H from Entrance 2.
Both take around four hours and show off the best of the park, including a boat ride.
And make sure to dress for the weather.
It can be colder and wetter than the coast.
Layers, a rain jacket, and sturdy shoes are a must.
And finally, bring your own lunch and water.
There are restaurants in the park,
but they're spread out and not always easy to reach depending on your route.
