Hello, my name is Denson Paul Pollard and I'm recording this video to answer some questions
that I've received via email about trills on the trombone, lip trills, which are kind of fun and
required in many solos on the trombone. In my opinion, a lip trill is really just a fast slur
and anybody that's tried to lip trill on the trombone knows that they're easier when you're
playing smaller intervals. A perfect fifth lip trill
is difficult, but a major second
is easy. So, it's better to try to trill on intervals that are smaller
and oftentimes you can find those intervals that are smaller in the higher range.
It's kind of easier to lip trill in the higher range. Now, how do you work on lip trills? How
do you develop them? I would suggest, like most things on the trombone, you start slow. Move slow
and gradually increase the speed.
You can see in my face there's not a lot of extra movement. My face is pretty relaxed
and you can also maybe see that my jaw is moving a little bit.
I'm kind of doing that a little bit when I slur.
If you have to do a slur that requires that your slide move, start the movement slow
and then fast and then stop the movement in the middle, but keep the trill going.
Above all, blow lots of air and try to stay as physically relaxed as possible
when you're working on your lip trills. Have fun!
